We have enough trouble playing through teams as it is without accentuating the issue. I think we need to shift the other way and give the team some real width.

We were always at our most dangerous when we had wide players who could beat people paired up with attacking fullbacks. That's what we should be trying to emulate in my opinion.
For that you'd have to sign two actual wingers and a world class DM. This means no griezmann(or martial on the bench) and no mhkitaryan. It's obviously not what mourinho has in mind

You seem to be labouring under a misconception. Mourinho used a diamond domestically with Inter but switched to a 4-2-3-1 for their victorious Champions League run, including in the final vs Bayern where Eto'o and Pandev were stationed on the flanks and Sneidjer in the hole.

The 4-4-2 Diamond is a system with strengths and weaknesses like any other; the weaknesses I highlighted are not controversial. Anyway, this has veered dangerously off-topic. Needless to say, should Griezmann arrive this summer, I think we're most-likely to see him deployed in two positions: behind the #9 in a 4-2-3-1, or on the right in a 4-3-3, the two formations Mourinho has been altering between for the last seven years of his career.

Yeah, you're right. The year before the victorious run was when he deployed the diamond in Europe as well as the league too. This is the line up he fielded against Man Utd when we knocked them out on route to that final against Barcelona.

I just thought that the system would perfectly suit our midfielders and forwards and I assign a lot of value in getting your best players to play in the positions they are most comfortable in. But like you said, let's not veer off topic any further.

God damn, I love that formation though. It just seems right.

Very strange. It's going to be so hard for Atletico to compete with Real and Barca. I don't understand why he wants to stay. I'm supporting Real Sociedad from now on, hope they get 4th!!

Meh, usual shenanigans to allow the selling club to spend the money without a huge tax.

He's lived in Spain for 12 years now and I think he's said in an interview that he apparently loves the culture/weather there and that type of stuff is important to him. He won't start for Barca and Real is a no go so if he wants to move to a bigger/more prestigious club it'd have to be abroad, but I doubt he's desperate to leave because he's highly valued (top earner for Atletico I think) and is competing in CL.

I don't know how much is true about it but a few weeks ago, Lequipe were talking about him and apparently for him the only reason to move would be for marketing reasons and United would be the priority. That kind of worries me because if that's the only reason, his head can be turned at any points by Atletico.

I will never understand the weather thing...go sit in the sun when you retire! Really disappointed that he's staying. He was the player we needed to really go up a gear.

So he's not bothered about trophies?

If he doesn't come this year then I wouldn't try again for him.
It needs to be prestigious to play for us, not for someone like Antoine who only wants to come for the profile but is happy to delay the move.
Ah United will be there when Simeone goes so why move now.
Fair enough Antoine but if that's the case then good luck to you.

He is bothered about lifestyle and United aren't exactly a guarantee of trophies.
Lifestyle  Sounds like a pussy

There's only a few club who guarantee trophies (although we have won 2 in the past year). But United are a bigger prospect at trophies than Atletico. What has he won there...a supercopa(community shield)!

I agree. Sticking with Atletico because the weather is better? feck off!!!

If true he should stay at a Atletico being left in the dust by Barca & RM.

A pussy because he loves the place where he is and do what he loves, really?

I would love to see him at United and hopes that it will happen this summer but I will never judge someone who choose to be in a place he loves.

Yes I think he is a pussy for sticking with Atletico because it has the best weather. This post was sent before I could complete it so ignore

He is one of the worlds best players and seems content to stick with Atletico and fight for 4th. He could easily leave and hugely improve a team like United and fight for 1st but the weather seems to be a big deal for him. Sorry a couple of years of bad weather is worth fighting for the top trophies for me, he really comes across as a pussy

People don't think in straight lines like that. Usually when we are faced with big decisions about moving or job opportunities and whatnot, a lot of factors are considered and more often than not, small little things can nudge one choice over another if the two are both appealing in their own right. So you can't simplify the choice of a footballer to choosing one club over the other because of *insert trivial factor*.

Why are you talking about weather? It's not about weather, it's about people and a culture that he loves, remember Griezmann is more spanish than french.

I mention weather because thats what Griezmann mentioned

Well, it's not just that. He already said several times the problems with leaving Spain are the culture, the weather, family and he doesn't like UK tabloids. He likes to watch the league and heard good things about it but he isn't sure if he can find a team that suits him.

Edit: And he meant I need to be happy outside of football.

Yeah Man Utd are one of most successful clubs in the world so the trophies aren't guaranteed but it's pretty damn close.

I'm not french and don't follow this as closely as you! I don't understand why you took criticism of my weather post when you mention it yourself now

I took criticism because you limit his opinion to the weather, you insult someone and don't have the courtesy to acknowledge the all package which has been mentioned in this thread several times.
In the end it's simple, Griezmann loves everything about Spain, he thinks about his wife and her family, he thinks about money, he thinks about football and at the end he is going to take a decision, no one really knows what it's going to be but people should remember that Madrid is a really important place for him.

You are hypersensitive

My opinion is that the position of the two clubs are making a difference in his decision, or indecision. He looks at United, a giant club, he seems like a fan also of the club but at this point in time his chances of winning trophies in United are not so better than at Atletico. But at Atletico right now he is playing champions leagee consistently, big games, big platform. He will earn less but it's not peanuts at Atleti either and the lifestyle is what he likes. He also seems very enamoured with Simeone and there is good unity in that team. Ex-players like Diego Costa and Raul Garcia love the club still. Like there is good bonding there amongst the players. All of that could change in 2 years time, maybe less. But for now i don't think it's an easy decision for him to leave.
