United wouldn't have entered discussions with both the player, and the club, not knowing what was likely to happen. As has been said many times, the decision today would only change the negotiating tactic that United use, as Atletico would most likely want full payment or a huge chunk up front, whereas United would rather pay the fee over the lifetime of the contract.
