What do think of the (supposedly) imminent signing of Anthony Martial?

Seems to have an excellent first touch, and tons of technical ability.

Does look extremely raw though. Which is to be expected I guess.

Really I think he looks like a taller, less built Memphis... too raw.

I can see why we pursue him so hard. A teenager who is fast, strong, good technique and can shoot is rare. Not the finish article though, far from it, so its still a big gamble at the quoted price. But at worst if he turns out shite we might still sell him for 10 to 20m.

Memphis is a better finisher and has more end product now, this guy is a bit too raw and can lack an end product sometimes but a better ball carrier, dribbler and has the capability to beat defenders out of sheer strength and straight line speed like our old Valencia, circa 2009-10. I think Memphis is destined to be a #10 whereas this guy is entirely capable of playing across the front 3 or #10.

Damien Comolli :

“He is mix of Nicolas Anelka and Thierry Henry. At a young age he has Anelka’s talent to dribble and his technique and at the same time the way he gets in behind defences, and the way he finishes, reminds me a lot of Thierry Henry. He has everything to become a world class striker.

“The important thing is that he needs to play in a team that suits his style. It would be wrong to sit him on the bench. He can play wide left, but his best position is as a striker but one who plays with a No10 behind him like (Wayne) Rooney.

“When Thierry was at Arsenal what suited him was that he played in a quick passing team and that is the same with this player. He (Martial) will not be suited to a team that is going to keep possession and builds slowly. He needs quick transitions in order to get in behind defences.

“What I like about him is that he is someone who wants to win. He will not be bullied by defenders. It is a fantastic purchase and he is going to be a fantastic player providing he gets handled the right way. He is a bright boy. United have to look after him.”

Let's hope this comes from the side of Comolli's brain that signed Luis Suarez and Gareth Bale.

And not the Andy Carroll and Stewart Downing side.

Wow. Just seen those clauses.

Is there anyone who wishes we don't actually end up paying 80mil euros for him? That's how funny this transfer is. Everyone related to our club should be hoping we end up paying the full whack.

I'm not overly worried. Wayne always takes a while to get going.

Where does this myth come from? I can think of plenty of occasions when he's started the season on fire. The only times he doesn't is when he either gets injured super early on (Reading and Fulham spring to mind) or he gets banned for a red card in a friendly tournament. Even then he still scored 2 and assisted one on the opening day.

So our new number 9, indicating no striker coming in. Wonder how he'll fit, on the wings or central? Rooney is undroppable.
Bayern Munchen fans said that about van Bommel before van Gaal signed Gustavo. Everyone knows what happened afterwards.

I think, in all honesty, that we're going to have to accept that titles/CL's are a good few years away, and in the meantime we'll just have to see how the likes of Memphis/Martial/Perreira/Wilson etc develop.

And I think most of us would be willing to accept that, if it wasn't that in the meantime those cnuts across the road will be cleaning up the titles. If it was Arsenal/Chelsea that were winning, I think we'd all be a lot more patient and relaxed.

They've been patient for more than 10 years now...I'm not sure we'd take that

What I mean, is if City weren't on the scene with their lottery money, and it was just Arsenal and Chelsea as our main rivals for the league, we'd all be a lot more relaxed about building a young side that will take a few years to develop.

City being the ones that will likely carry on cleaning up the titles while our team develops, makes people impatient.

it'll be interesting to see if berahino goes from west brom to spurs today and for how much. that should put the price of this deal in to some kind of context.

Where?

He did play well, not against the signing. However yet again we have been taken to the cleaners. We should only have paid a fraction of that and still gone for another striker of more experience.

We dont know what the actual fee is yet. If its 36m, thats probably a little over the odds, 25m is would be a good price. The 58m, is supposed to be based on him becoming the best striker in the league and player in the world, if that happens it would be more than worth it.

West Brom were asking for 25 million earlier this summer. According to the press at least.

We're cutting this one a bit fine now aren't we? Imagine the meltdown if we balls this transfer up. A few muppets might not make it.

edit: panic over

Monaco will receive € 50 million guarantee. This will be paid in the amount of € 30 million up front, followed by four payments of € 5 million each year in July.

The additional unsecured expenses, totaling another € 30 million. These include € 5 million each time Martial is the top scorer in the Premier League, to a maximum of € 15 million. Another € 5 million will be due if Martial wins Golden Boy. The final € 10m will be paid if Martial won the Balon D'or career in Manchester.

So its 21 million upfront + 4 payments once a year of 3.6 million + add ons

might even be a bit higher as they left it so late to get him. i think it's clear we've paid a premium for him but sometimes that's what it takes. hopefully the scouting network comes good and makes this look a bargain.

Interesting that seems to suit a system that involves a fast transition. Like many of ours players oddly enough despite how we actually play.

Martial is now almost official. France has again been looted our best son. This time by the English, but specifically Manchester United. There have been various reports over how much money will exchange hands. Either, as we have seen the completed TMS documents.

It is interesting to note that all the terms are future individual successes. It is telling how great the value to Monaco and Manchester this player that it almost seems likely that these obligations are met.

it is certain that we will see the star of Martial shine for many years, and it will be an interesting journey for another deceased son from the lights of France.

If that's the case, then why did we offload Januzaj? It makes no sense to bring in a raw talent for a massive fee while letting another one go.

I doubt we'll see Januzaj in a United shirt again tbh.

When you look at that this is not as massive as some papers want to make out. 22m pounds and then peanuts each year.
We done great at this deal and if in the end €80m will be paid he would be worth double of that.

The Welbeck comparisons are fair IMO (and not just because he's tall and black) with the crucial difference being his reputation as a composed and clinical finisher, scoring 0.75 goals/game since he moved from the wings to the centre.

I've always thought we played our best attacking football in the last few years with Welbeck in our team. If we can replace him with someone younger/better who is a prolific goalscorer then that's great news.
