Anthony Martial

What do think of the (supposedly) imminent signing of Anthony Martial?

Yep. It's a good way to structure our payments. The basic fee is still very high though for a relatively unproven kid.

Still, this is possibly our most exciting signing since Ronaldo. I'm looking forward to watching a potentially world class youngster develop.

A touch of spice in the stolid pudding of our transfer window. We needed more. It's hard to see us challenging this season.

If Monaco get all the bonuses we pretty much have a bargain. That's Ronaldo level output for 80 million euros.

Realistically he probably won't and we won't pay that much. But I hope we end up doing it

Hope he gets #14.. :D

Odd mode of operation - I can afford to do a lot of things but don't just do it, mainly to ensure I can act when required in future. Watch us mull and dither over a future tier1 signing ala Aguero, Hazard.
I'd imagine Martial is viewed as a future tier 1 player.

Oh yes, the fee is definitely high but I'm glad we paid up and got who we wanted for a change. Chelsea apparently had a 40mil euros bid rejected earlier so it isn't as if we paid what we did just for the heck of it like some people feel for some odd reason.

Very excited to see him play too. Couldn't care less what we paid, it's done.

:wenger:

No, we haven't though have we. How is anyone trying to 'spin' it? The deal is excellently structured in our favour.

We are still paying them a minimum total of £36m (across 4 years) regardless of how he does.

League top scorer. Golden Boy. Balloon d or. All individual honours of the highest level. Not the usual clauses which are linked to team's success. IF he turns out to be top drawer, we pay up. Simple.

Not saying otherwise. Just saying the way the deal is structured is abnormal.

I think we will end up playing like that:

------Martial
Depay-Rooney-Mata

LVG gave him the #9, so he sees him as a striker.

I hope it is more like this, if only we could have got a quality right sided player with pace and then moved Mata to 10 and Rooney to the bench.

The way the deal is structured is excellent. There's also no way it could have been structured that way in just a couple of days, when the media first started noticing. More like 2 months.

Considering the rate of inflation in football, and the way this deal is structured, it could be a fairly fiscally sound deal.

Basically, paying 5m over four seasons for a potentially great player might seem like chump change relative to the market in the future.

Not a scientific economic basis, but a nice way to look at it all the same.

If that's the case, then why did we offload Januzaj? It makes no sense to bring in a raw talent for a massive fee while letting another one go.
Januzaj went from being named as our back striker then starting 4 consecutive games to going straight out of the door on loan to Dortmund - I think he and LVG had a massive fallout because it makes no sense to just throw him out like that when there is a very strong chance of him getting enough game time here.

Those clauses in the Martial deal make the deal a bit more sensible though if we had approached them earlier maybe we could have haggled the fee down by a few million.

Not seen any of him except his youtube compilation on the previous page.. Looks good, excited..

unless he sees him as a no10 and now he has martial either rooney or mata will play 10 and he wants adnan to develop this season rather than stagnate as he did a little last year.
Im still feeling ok about him going to dortmuund
