What do think of the (supposedly) imminent signing of Anthony Martial?

What's there not to fathom? It's as if they try to come across as clueless.

Isn't the potential increase abnormally high? I don't remember ever seeing a deal announced with future possible add ons that total £12m.

I think, in all honesty, that we're going to have to accept that titles/CL's are a good few years away, and in the meantime we'll just have to see how the likes of Memphis/Martial/Perreira/Wilson etc develop.

And I think most of us would be willing to accept that, if it wasn't that in the meantime those cnuts across the road will be cleaning up the titles. If it was Arsenal/Chelsea that were winning, I think we'd all be a lot more patient and relaxed.
Its not so much city winning that's the problem, as just being boring to watch. I'm sure plenty on here would have taken a few arsenal years post Fergie where its entertaining football but very much a transition phase.

Interesting that seems to suit a system that involves a fast transition. Like many of ours players oddly enough despite how we actually play.
That is what is so weird. Most of our players are capable of moving the ball about quickly, yet we are playing so slow. Maybe with this signing things will change.

The Welbeck comparisons are fair IMO (and not just because he's tall and black) with the crucial difference being his reputation as a composed and clinical finisher, scoring 0.75 goals/game since he moved from the wings to the centre.

I've always thought we played our best attacking football in the last few years with Welbeck in our team. If we can replace him with someone younger/better who is a prolific goalscorer then that's great news.

Yep, agreed with all of that.

Rooney has also linked well with both Welbeck and Saha (lazy comparisons I know, but there's definitely similarities between all three). So hopefully they can form a similar sort of partnership. Rooney, like Mata actually, seems to be at his best when surrounded by pace.

There's definitely that too.

Probably depends on if the incentives are team based like winning the league or CL in the next 4 seasons or player based, like him scoring 20 goals or making 35+ appearances and so on. In any case, I doubt all of them will be met and if they are, it would make the deal look good anyways because the player turns out to be very good.

Please tell me this is not true. Could we get any more mugged off? Paying that for a player who could be Bellion mark 2 for all we know.
You know we aren't buying some random player? He's one of the most highly rated youngsters in the world, someone who van Gaal has scouted all year and someone who united have apparently kept tabs on since he was 13 or 14.

So, when will he be able to make his first appearance? Against the Scousers?

Martial is now almost official. France has again been looted our best son. This time by the English, but specifically Manchester United. There have been various reports over how much money will exchange hands. Either, as we have seen the completed TMS documents.

Monaco will receive € 50 million guarantee. This will be paid in the amount of € 30 million up front, followed by four payments of € 5 million each year in July.

The additional unsecured expenses, totaling another € 30 million. These include € 5 million each time Martial is the top scorer in the Premier League, to a maximum of € 15 million. Another € 5 million will be due if Martial wins Golden Boy. The final € 10m will be paid if Martial won the Balon D'or career in Manchester.

It is interesting to note that all the terms are future individual successes. It is telling how great the value to Monaco and Manchester this player that it almost seems likely that these obligations are met.

it is certain that we will see the star of Martial shine for many years, and it will be an interesting journey for another deceased son from the lights of France.

thats actually not that bad. Its actually brilliant

League top scorer. Golden Boy. Balloon d or. All individual honours of the highest level. Not the usual clauses which are linked to team's success. IF he turns out to be top drawer, we pay up. Simple.

Golden Boy:lol:

That breakup is excellent.. if he ends up checking any of those off, then no one will care about the money..

on another note.. what exactly is our obsession with 4+1 year deals? Why dont we have 6 year ones like other clubs.. especially for the bigger assets

You'd have to assume if he satisfies all that criteria we'd be having some sort of success

Yes but we won't pay up if he's sinply a part of the success. He'd have to be among the biggest contributors if not THE biggest contributor to it. That's the difference.

Yes I do.
 I'm not trying to be a prick. I genuinely don't know what people expect us to do if a top striker isn't available other than get the next big thing.

We will play possession football and people have to get used to it. It can be brilliant in its own way. What we need to make it work better is players with more pace, penetration and hold up play. This guy potentially, maybe mor immediately, could give us a bit of all of that. Depay as well a couple of those things. So that's positive.

I hope after paying 36m for a player he will start. Or am I wrong in thinking this way?

I think we will end up playing like that:

------Martial
Depay-Rooney-Mata

LVG gave him the #9, so he sees him as a striker.

Utterly overpaid no matter how any rose tinted glasses wearing fan wants to spin it.

Aye. All clauses are based on HIM becoming sensationally good. Nothing to do with our success.
Yep. And we only pay 21 million this year and couple million every July. In the context of everything. That's rather good

Yep. It's a good way to structure our payments. The basic fee is still very high though for a relatively unproven kid.

Still, this is possibly our most exciting signing since Ronaldo. I'm looking forward to watching a potentially world class youngster develop.

A touch of spice in the stolid pudding of our transfer window. We needed more. It's hard to see us challenging this season.

We can afford to do so. As long as he's a success nobody will care.
Odd mode of operation - I can afford to do a lot of things but don't just do it, mainly to ensure I can act when required in future. Watch us mull and dither over a future tier1 signing ala Aguero, Hazard.
