What do think of the (supposedly) imminent signing of Anthony Martial?

I can't really get excited by this transfer yet. When Nani and Anderson arrived they were the next big things, Anderson was the next Ronaldinho. If this guy becomes as good as Nani I'd say that was a good result, the chances of him being another Ronaldo or Rooney are so slim. Seems a very strange decision to put all our eggs in this basket.

What's that based on?

For the people asking who he is, didn't they watch the Monaco v Arsenal CL last year, he played really well, set up Berbs goal

How many players in history have been as good as Ronaldo? I don't need to explain the chances of someone being as good as him do I? There's loads of promising young players in the world, the odds are stacked against any of them becoming a Ronaldo or Rooney.

RMC put this apparently. So basically, it's 36m, unless he becomes the best striker around. Don't mind that.
Only the golden boy bullshit seems a bit too much. If that is true, hopefully Monaco gets 75m from this deal.

I am not excited until I see him playing for us and how LvG has us playing. If it is still pass, pass and more passing, ball in to Rooney, miss, then it has been a waste. If he now adapts his lineup because he has the pace in the side and it is exciting then it hasn't been a waste.

Well Ronaldo it obviously goes without saying, he's probably never going to reach those heights. But I don't see why he couldn't emulate Rooney, solid dependable high level service for over a decade, scouts must have seen something in him to command this transfer fee.

Given the inconsistent displays by the more experienced Depay... I think he will do well but I don't expect him to blow up so quick.
He only got 12 or so goals in the french league (weaker league) last season.

While it's true Ligue 1 is a worse league, obviously, it's more defensively oriented and most teams are solid at the back. He played many games on the wing too iirc. Think this will be a great signing. It's just too bad we can't really ease him in, but hopefully he's ready.

Still raging inside we spend 36m to 80m bonusses on this guy instead of spending the same amount on lacazette
Why? Pretty much anyone who watches them says Martial has got way more potential and is a lot more talented then Lacazette. Lacazette is just older and more experienced then Martial.

If it's one or the other, I'd take Martial over Lacazette every day of the week. Lacazette wouldn't have been cheap, probably around 40 million, and he's pretty much reached his full potential in my opinion, Martial could end up being much better.

Those "add-ons" are some of the most ambitious I've ever seen. Must be seriously highly rated for them to accept them as in any way likely.

Basically, even if we end up paying the full 80m he won't have been expensive! (weirdly, the only way he looks really bad value is if we pay the lowest fee quoted anywhere in the press)

this guy has more potential than Lacazette, apparently. given we're not going to win the league this year anyway, I'm happy with putting some faith in a potential world better rather than someone who seems more just like a standard goal scorer.

Yep. Clearly rated incredibly highly. Also something I think a lot of people are forgetting is Chelsea bid 40m euros for him a month ago basically, and were flat out rejected. So it's not just us spending big money on him with no competition.. Everyone rates him.

Don't get me wrong I am excited by him. But if we are pinning our titles hopes on a 19 year old who hasn't exactly been prolfic then well... yeah.
Just look at Chamack, Giroud, Riveriere etc players that have come from Lique 1 and not exactly set the world alight.

I expect Martial to be a superstar one day, just skeptical he is a) ready now b) we should be putting that pressure on him now

Another attacking signing is essential IMO,

Not his best game I'm sure. :nervous:
Haven't even seen the video yet, the performances against Valencia in the champions league a few weeks ago were very good though. But he did have his moments and an assist for berba in that one! Away to Arsenal in the champions league knockout phase at 18/19 years old though, have to keep it in mind.

Has somebody seen the add-ons specifics?

Yeh exactly, can't expect too much. Still I'm sure he's displayed far better performances and hopefully those will become more frequent as he matures.

I'd be very happy if we manage to pay the whole amount then. Can you get me a link where you found it?

Bizarrely true

RMC said:
Monaco will receive € 50 million guarantee. This will be paid in the amount of € 30 million up front, followed by four payments of € 5 million each year in July.

The additional unsecured expenses, totaling another € 30 million. These include € 5 million each time Martial is the top scorer in the Premier League, to a maximum of € 15 million. Another € 5 million will be due if Martial wins Golden Boy. The final € 10m will be paid if Martial won the Balon D'or career in Manchester.

So its 21 million upfront + 4 payments once a year of 3.6 million + add ons

Not that bad really.
