What do think of the (supposedly) imminent signing of Anthony Martial?

It's exciting that news is starting to break that we've made a bid but can't see anything coming from it. Monaco did have to sell and so late in the window it's not going to happen or at least I don't think so. They would have to find a replacement so late in the day.

Is he a right winger? Please tell me he is a right winger.

More of a #9, but has played left and right. His future position will most likely be central, though - he only plays wide on occasion because he's 19 and isn't a great finisher at the moment.

This guy is a 19-year-old who scored 8 league goals last season. If he comes here for 50 million on deadline day it could generate enormous pressure on him.

I don't get why something was not sorted earlier. RVP and Falcao were sold ages ago yet here we are in the last 48 hours making a huge gamble and putting a lot of faith in a very young and unproven striker to help lead our attack.

Christ. We're not really going to pay €50 million for a 19 year old who only scored 8 times in 31 games with a view to him saving our season, are we?

So if we sign him he will replace Hernandez on the bench and it will still be Mata on the right?

You won't see Mata centrally, even if we buy a right winger. The problem is that LvG wants his creative players in the wide positions cutting inside, like Ribery and Robben for Bayern for example. The 10 with LvG acts like a deep striker. So I guess if we would buy him the one who will play number 10 is going to be Rooney.

I don't think this would be a "save our season" kind of buy but more an investment into having a future world class player, exactly what we should be doing imo. The problem is that the transfer fees are completely blown out of proportion right now and combined with the strong GBP that's the kind of transfer fees that you will see.

This merely tells me that you wish to avoid addressing the Anthony Martial panic buy issue.
A 19 year old talent who isn't the finished article is not panic buying. You are probably just bitter because you thought Spurs were close to getting him earlier in the summer.

I'd say that he want his most attacking players than creative players on the wing; almost as really widened forwards. Mata is just a stop gap for someone else; that was obvious from the start.

Well thats the problem with Mata he usually drifts inside long before he receives the ball so there is no cutting inside from wide positions instead we all to often have 2 players occupying the space behind the striker and only Darmian on the right wing.

I've never heard of him but we need to sign someone so I'm all for it.

Now that Mr Gaal has my approval he can go ahead and get him in! ;)

Obviously a signing more for the future than right now, but he has good footwork and pace. 9 goals + 3 Assists in 1830 minutes in Ligue 1 last year is pretty damn good for a player who was 18 for the first half of the season.

I've never ever seen him play. I know he's highly rated alright but the money being branded about sounds insane. Has he got the potential to match the fee? Also is there anything in these rumours? @kouroux @Gerrard in Istanbul
From the little I've seen of him, he's exactly what you'd expect a young talented striker to be: inconsistent, can miss some big chances, but can also look excellent. The fee would be huge and a bit crazy. He's not necessarily the first player I'd have thought we would be in for.

Saving our 2016/17 season. This one will be about finishing top 3 and trying to Chelsea our way to a CL final with Fellaini headers and resolute bus-parking.

The profile of the player, his age and his his appearances for Monaco last season (being in and out of the side) would suggest it's a signing for the future. The fee and the timing, being at the end of the window, at a time when we have obvious issues up front, doesn't suggest that, but perhaps, if true, it's just something we decided to do once we saw Hernandez was off.

A little thing, Vietto and Dybala scored 12 and 13 goals in more games, they are older and played a lot more of professional games.

Cheers. Wonder if there is anything in this at all. He was linked with Spurs at the start of the window but it's all gone quiet until now. The money seems crazy. I've heard of him but I haven't heard him spoken of as a huge talent.

I said 3 days back in another thread that the striker situation is dire in terms of availability and I don't see anything that will change next summer and so I was disappointed that we weren't even trying to buy some quality young strikers who could potentially become world class in future so this would be perfect IMO. The fan obsession with fees is a bit bizarre really

The obvious caveat to that is harder leagues (for Vietto definitely). But I agree with what you are saying, a 19 year old with a 1 in 3 rate is really good, considering how good he is in other facets of the game also.

Panic buy or is there a deal in place to approach Monaco after their CL qualifier?

United have wasted the entire summer pursuing strikers that are out of your reach, and now ....

B is for Button. P is for Panic.

It's clear you do not like Man United or United fans, so I can't see why you come on here other than for us to laugh at you and your bitterness.

Is this a hoax thread about a made up player. I have to ask with a name like Martial Arts/Copyright. Not that I´m following the French league or make it a habit to watch Monaco CL games, but €50M for a 19 year old I never heard of is something. Crazy.

I know absolutely nothing about him. Who is he comparable to?

I could see him turn into a sort of Lewandowski, if he puts a bit of weight. But at the moment he isn't comparable to anyone.

When it comes less than 48 hours before the windows shuts, and when it follows yet another terrible league performance by Rooney, and when you've previously been wasting your time pursuing unattainable targets like Muller and Kane, and if you're bidding 50m euros ... then yes, I think panic buy would be a fair assessment.

Btw, I never thought Spurs were close to getting him earlier this summer.

If this is true, the fact that we are doing it last minute mostly likely means he was well down on the list of our transfer targets. It's concerning that none of the top players wanted to come to us.
