What do think of the (supposedly) imminent signing of Anthony Martial?

I thought the muppets would be happy with this. But actually it seems like he is already a hate figure for some of them because
1) He's not a big name player they have been creaming about for ages
2) Worse, while not a big a name, he's costing big money they think is stopping an actual "big name" transfer

His problem will be us getting on his back first. We do tend to build our players up almost as bad as the scousers do.
Phil Jones the new Duncan Edwards, Januzaj better than Sterling, Hernandez better than Suarez. All of that was mentioned on here.

Who the feck said those things on here? They would have been laughed at. Especially the Edwards and Suarez ones.

Yep, weird. Always the same though, people always find something to moan.

They all happened. I remember well. Jones was after his first few games when he was admittedly a bit of a beast. Hernandez was before Suarez became fantastic, but I still felt he was better.

The more I watch of him the more he just reminds me of Welbeck. Most of his videos consist of him losing the ball and falling over, doesn't look like a natural finisher and more of a wide forward/ winger like Memphis. Looks like a total waste of money considering we have the likes of Wilson already at the club.

I wonder if some of them even like United. It's like people who "hate-watch" certain TV programs.

you do realise we have lost about 15 players this transfer window don't you - it's not about muppetry - you need a certain amount of players to get you through a season.
And what amazing players did we "lose"? We certainly didn't "lose" anything by selling Di Maria. God knows we had plenty of deadwood that I am delighted VG has cleared out in a year. We had a bloated but fatally flawed squad when he took over.

I remember watching Football Focus on BBC and they had Sir Bobby Charlton on talking about Jones in his first season and those comparisons were being made. Was ridiculous.

....................................Wilson...................................
Depay...........................Janauzj.........................Martial
..........................Periera..............Kehinde....................
Shaw.............Fonsu-Mensah.........Jones...............Mcnair
...................................Milinkovich...............................

If half that lot fulfil their potential we are going to have one hell of a team for the next decade.
(admittedly the next couple of years might be tough though as we are a bit light in some areas)

If we have just spent that much on some brazilian wonderkid with s fancy name I think people on here would be more comfortable.
Yes its a lot of money - so was Di Maria and Falcao and lets be honest he has a great chance of ending up a better player for us than either of them!

I have to say I did find some of the highlights from the game against Martial puzzling. A lot of the clips were of him losing the ball but he did also have some wonderful moments.

He's got pace and he's got a lot of ability so he's a quality signing. But the fee will be an issue with the press if he doesn't produce.

Where do people think he will play? Will he start? And if so will it be from the right or up front?

You left out Tuanzebe. He's a fantastic defensive prospect for me. Push Mensah in midfield instead of Kehinde and him in defense.

There is also Gribbin and Gomes further down the line along with Kehinde/Williams.

probably a bit of both as either a replacement up top for Rooney as he will need some rest with CL, league, fa cup and league cup games this season.

potentially as a striker with rooney as a 10... but I hope at some point we get to see
-------------------------------Rooney-----------------------------
--------Depay-----------------Mata------------------Martial-----

but LVG does not seem to like Mata as a 10 for some reason but for me with the pace of those players on the flanks that could be a great attacking 4

yes its probably the most exciting crop of young players since the class of 92... and with giggs potentially there to manage them as a group of players thats a very exciting prospect - of course things rarely work out so ideally in football but its a great thought as to what could be.

I doubt Mata will be moved inside so if Mata is to remain in the team it'll mean Rooney dropping back. But that's a huge worry for me because that means our best two strikers will be on the pitch. Increases injury chances for both plus what the hell is our fall back when things aren't working

LVG ain't playing Mata as #10.

Pretty clear at this point.

Infact are problems would significantly lessen in attack if LVG found a way to play Mata there like he was doing with Chelski before Maureen. People forget how good his output was there at his best.

I know its unlikely but Im clinging to the hope now he has an option of a pacey wide forward type player on each flank he gives it a go... though perhaps philosophy dictates fellaini will be the no10... but I'd love to see Mata there for a run of games

for a player so raw and inconsistent, this transfer just doesnt make sense at the huge figures being reported. I just do not understand Utds strategy with this one. We could of just kept Welbeck from how some of these videos portray this lad.

Personally, I expect him to come in and play on the right, Mata will move inside and play behind Rooney or another striker if we sign one. His biggest asset seems to be his pace and directness so he's likely to have more of an impact out wide then up front, at least at the beginning.

Sensationalist headline. It is also in their interest to let the lad develop, but journos and papers these days.

Maybe mate... Though LVG is yet to use Mata through the middle so I don't know if that's going to change. It still means we are short of options with both Rooney and Martial on the pitch at the same time.

Why do you expect that?

I think its obvious we're not looking to replace Mata, the amount of players the Caf has been up in arms about that we're not interested in that play there surely confirm it.

I imagine he'll play number 10. LVG loves an athlete there.

I've been working on the assumption that lvg rates mata so highly he has him doing a job out right as he is our best option there, whilst players like januzaj and herrera are less effective out wide. If we get a rw then mata comes inside.

Its an assumption built on hope.

He's 19, of course he's incosistent. Welbeck won't turn out to be a great player, this guy still might be one.

so if you can guarantee inconsistency then its too much of a gamble for the figures involved. That proves he isnt worth this money. Im not normally a moaner about fees, but this one is totally stupid.

What proves he isn't worth it. As you said it's a gamble, if he'll come good in few years nobody will mention that fee.

IF he comes good. He could also shockingly flop and when that happens the fee being so ridiculously high is then a problem. If Memphis flops then its no big deal as he only cost us a very decent £20ishmillion

Well of course, if he flops it will be a problem if he doesn't flop it won't be. Too bad people will be glued up to that fee constantly.

including the one person that counts the most, the player!. Whats that going to do for pressure on his shoulders?. He could easily flop because he feels too much pressure and struggles to live upto the fee.

Will we mange to feck this up?
Hope so if the figures are correct. 80m EUR for a 19 years old fellow who played a handful of games, feck me...

But for the record it seems Real are more to be blamed for the DDG fiasco so it's a bit unfair on us. :D

The fee is high, but 1) we left it late in the window. 2) Monaco really did not want him to go considering they've invested in players for the future. 3) A lot of clubs were going in for him next season.

I think it's better deal than going after some older strikers. All would cost similar money, all would probably only be a few season and not make the step up to Premier League.

19 is young, and a lot of money for that player. That was said about Rooney and Shaw and recent seasons aside Rooney turned out to be worth it and Shaw has been our best player this season.

If he hits his potential like a lot of people say he has, then £36 mil in a few season may seem a coup.

To be honest, if not this guy, who else is out there? There is a real lack of talent in the striker market at the moment. At least a lack of obtainable talent.

1) 36m is far too much for a gamble.
2) We have plenty of good youth players, not sure why we need him.
3) We are in need of attacking players now, and not in 5 years.
4) 36m is an absolutely ridiculous price for a nobody.
