How have people never heard of this kid? He's going to be sensational if developed right. Far too soon to expect much of him this season though.

You're joking right?

Yes.

Rooney has basically had 20 goals a season for 10 years and he was great value for us. Price isn't too different 11 years later. I think it's 36m and then the add on fees will be for things that if we have to pay it, then he will definitely be worth it.

Rooney has been good value for us. But Rooney will, more than likely, become our all time top scorer. To expect anything remotely similar from this kid is heaping massive pressure on him. And for the price tag of 36m, that will be expected of him. The media will get on his back if he fails to become prolific early on, increasing the pressure. If he ends up with 10/12 goals at the end of this season (which would be a good return), he won't get too much credit, because you expect goals when you sign strikers for big money. I don't think anyone can deny that this is a massive gamble.

However, I have no doubt our scouting team and LVG have looked extensively at this kid and if they're happy to buy him, whatever the price, then I'm happy to trust them.

Agreed. However, his price tag puts him straight into the deep end. 19 or 29, at that price, he needs to perform and if he doesn't, the media will destroy him.

Obviously the club and us as fans will be more patient but still, the pressure will be right on come that Liverpool match.

At what pricepoint would he not experience pressure? 30m? 20m? 10m? I think every player that pulls on the shirt experiences as much pressure as it's possible to feel. We're a huge club.

Obviously, there is pressure on a free transfer at United, I'm not doubting that. But do you think if he goes 3 games without scoring and cost 1.5 million the media will react the same as a 36 million pound player?

Two of the best and most highyly rated young players brought in this summer for a combined £62m. City have just paid £58m for KDB.

Why are people upset? It's not like kamikaze spending. We can afford it.

Trust me people wouldn't be upset if Martial came with another signing.

If he's our only signing, there will be a lot of meltdowns later on.

Price tag is nothing to do with him, fans need to realise this.

The knifes will be out way sooner now though. From the fans and the media. The poor lad will have to perform soon. I think that's pretty obvious.

Yep. And if he's not playing week in week out (which isn't inconceivable for a 19 year old) then there definitely will be comments to the effect of "Well you spent that much money on him and you're not playing him".

Rightly or wrongly, the first thing the kid will have to do is make people see how good he is, so they forget about how much we paid for him.

Price tag is nothing to do with him, fans need to realise this.
As I said, we and the club will obviously give him time but do you think the media will be kind to him because he is young?

Me or any of my friends never knew such a player ever existed. I don't follow Monaco, a big factor. A huge risk.

No, the media would jump on his back no matter what he does, so it's irrelevant in many ways.

To be honest if the kid can't deal with that level of pressure then he probably isn't made for the club or top level Football. Remember when Ronaldo came and the media were all over us about spending £12.5m on someone nobody every heard of? They then moved on to calling him a one trick pony, which moved on to him being a cheat, which eventually moved on to being the best player in the world.

Great players silence critics.

What would happen if Monaco pulled out now? We've already sold all the strikers? They'd certainly hold all the cards if they decided to try and renegotiate the fee upwards at the last minute.

Given the Martial deal was supposedly facilitated by Mendes in exchange for letting De Gea join Real, I'm nervous that the collapse of that deal could impact this one.

I'd assume everything is signed and sealed just waiting to announce it today? Martial is flying back to France today as well for international duty

Took him 2 years to really get going though. Just imagine Ronaldo would have cost us up to 80 (or 60) millions Euros at the time. I hope as much as anyone else that a 19! year old will be given the time he needs. But the media most certainly won't, which will make it much harder for him.

Indeed.

They didn't jump on Wilson's back last season in games he didn't score. I know what you mean but you're wrong if you think this price tag doesn't add a lot of pressure.

Then we would be dooooooooomed.

What would happen if Bale decides he wants a move to United TODAY because his hairdresser has informed him that he is about to move to Manchester?

When we actually need him. Yes he might be great in the future, I don't have a problem with that. We have paid far too much for him. If he is the only striker who comes in we are buggered. Surely to god they have something else up their sleeve.

Judging from his looks he fired his hairdresser a year ago.

It does add pressure, I'd like to hope that our fans realise that it's not his fault and give him time, I've noticed some (very few) are already turning on Memphis so I'm not holding out much hope.

At the end of the day it's good business if you ignore the price. Yes we are overpaying but if he improves the team then that's all that really matters. What is important now though is that we follow this up with another signing. Just Martial on his own and we are in trouble but with another signing we will all feel a lot better.

We've already bought 5 players! You muppets need to get a grip!

I know, I hate the way fans react to performances and I agree, I don't like this kids chances with the mentality of the modern fan and the media.

In an ideal world though, hopefully he develops well here with the full backing of the fans and goes onto have a great career.

Getting shit from the "fans" before he's even played would be ridiculous. Seems like we just re-signed Ashley Young judging by the reaction of some muppets on here.

Yeah it would. After 1 or 2 underwhelming performances it would be as well, but it will happen with the fee mentioned. Guaranteed.

you do realise we have lost about 15 players this transfer window don't you - it's not about muppetry - you need a certain amount of players to get you through a season.

We've also offloaded lots of players and our options up front are not really good enough even with the Martial signing, so it's not really about being a muppet or not.

Memphis, Mata, Young, Pereira and Lingard as our wide options doesn't really fill with confidence.

Well Ronaldo had the added scrutiny of all the cheat accusations and "wink-gate" yet still came good. I don't think Martial will have to cope with anything like that degree of persecution by the English press.

In terms of expectation, that's an issue for any young player United pay any kind of significant fee for. There'll be no meaningful difference in terms of the pressure felt by Depay and Martial as individuals. We just have to hope they're made of the right stuff like Ronaldo was and use that pressure to fuel their determination to become better players. If they can't do that, they probably won't cut it anyway.

We might not even announce it until after 6pm. I'm sure there are more pressing things. It's quiet but that's a good thing! Who knows where will we will be later in the day. At the minute, we're short but we can do transfers in a day; unlike Madrid :)
