What do think of the (supposedly) imminent signing of Anthony Martial?

19 year old RW/CF at Monaco. Has amazing potentialI think, and is the type of player we are reportedly after, in that he is rapid. Gave Arsenal a chasing at the Emirates last season too.

I've said all summer that my suspicion is that Felipe Anderson is our fall back option, but I think he's a name worth considering too.
He's not too familiar with scoring though looking at his stats so we cant really rely on him saving us from pursuing top 4 not to mention 2nd spot which was supposed to be our target. Feeling sad United is gradually and hugely lacking in what we were used to be made of tbh. No team will fear us anymore. Sigh

It's is all me by the way. what thread do you guys want me to make next guys?

Didn't take this story too seriously yesterday so I am little surprised that it wasn't total rubbish and that we are going through with it. I'm absolutely shocked that we are throwing this kind of money at a young player especially one that has so little experience at a high level. I know we always want the best young talent for the club but at the moment there is so much pressure to perform now that I can't understand why we are in for him.

At the end of day, it is a massive risk but if we think that he can make a significant contribution then I'll be patient with him.
Really?? I'm not. We are Manchester United. We try to sign the best young players in the world and have ALWAYS paid an huge premium for them. Rooney, Rio, Shaw, even £15-20m for De Gea when we first signed him. The kid is 19 and obviously United think he is worth the money. We have been right about these things fairly often in our past. Whilst people assume we MUST have a proven player to achieve our goals this season I don't agree, any player will take time to settle in - especially with LVGs philosophy.

Id rather we became successful through signing young, hungry players with world class potential rather then the like of Di Maria who seemingly only came here for the money. No guarentees Lacazette would fit in and whilst Pedro made sense to everyone maybe he preferred Chelsea to us and United thought - feck it, we have a list of options, lets go for the younster and gamble our money on a player that could last us a decade for our money.

This is a very exciting transfer if it does indeed complete....At the end of the day there are 10 strikers in the world good enough for Man Utd......Unfortunately for Van Gaal not one of them was available so if you can't get the best then you simply have to get those who will become the best with a little patience...Will give the squad a huge boost to have the option of a striker with pace and technical qualities up front...Kluivert was 19 when he scored the winner in the Champions League final against Milan over 20 years ago

of course its a panic buy

just like the last two windows when we have left it late

But we still need a striker at the end of the day...

We've scouted him for quite a while and are probably forced to sign him earlier, because other clubs are getting interested.

I feel there isnt an option in the poll for me

I am excited to see what he can do and hope he is amazing, but we are totally getting ripped and its massive risk

Aren't you usually someone who doesn't care about the fees?

All right, fair enough. I looked it up as well and was basing myself on this piece:

If the selling club decides they don't want to sell, an impasse is reached. If they want the full value of the clause, they can insist that the buying club make an offer of the buyout clause + VAT. Obviously, this whacks somewhere in the region of 20% on the bottom line of the deal for the buyer. Still, they pays their money and they gets their man. However, this still requires the selling club to ACCEPT their offer.

If they really want to play hardball, they can simply refuse to deal with the buying club in any way. In this case, it's the player's prerogative to get out of his contract using the clause. It's his contract, after all. The buying club are merely a 3rd party. How does he get out of it? By buying it out. How does he do that? Well, he deposits the value of the release clause with the league himself. Obviously, if this is tens of millions of euros, he's going to find that difficult. Even the handsomely-remunerated Leo Messi would struggle to meet his buyout clause.

So what happens? Well, in practice, the buying club gives it to him. This was the case in the transfers of Javi Martinez to Bayern and Ander Herrera to Manchester United. Athletic Bilbao are stubborn as Donkeys. They refuse to play non-Basques and, as such, refuse to sell their best players, so hard are they to replace. Bilbao thumbed their nose at the offers from both of the titans attempting to buy their players. They even went so far as to tweet their refusal of United's offer!

Both Herrera and Martinez had to deposit the value of their clause with the LFP, essentially turning themselves into free agents in the process – they had 'bought themselves out' of their contracts. Again, however, there are tax implications. When the money required to buy out the contract hits the player's account (or, more probably, that of the company he uses to manage his assets) it's liable to tax. Income tax is an eye-watering 52% for high earners in Spain. This means A) the Spanish Minister of Economy and Finance's eyes spin Looney Tunes-style and become € symbols and B) the buying club has to deposit more than twice the amount of the clause in the players account to pay the tax as well as the clause fee. Franz Beckenbauer once famously declared that Bayern would not get involved in the 'lunatic arms race' of the transfer market. With the Martinez transfer, it seems that they Bayern hierarchy are now prepared to pay what it takes to remain competitive at the top level.

These clauses have never really been tested under European Law, and are simply a matter of practice between clubs and football authorities. At the time of writing, this is an adequate, if simplified, explanation of how the British fan's second favourite bit of contract law operates.

The only bit that matters in there is the "never really been tested under European Law" and I'd add it's never been tested under Spanish tax law either. Which is why a few rulings by the LFP management board, and some case law is all we've really got. However it's enough to know that the law does indeed apply equally to EU clubs and Spanish ones, and that the LFP and CSD agree on that interpretation. That said, neither Spanish clubs nor foreign ones would want to use them, other than as a last resort. Usually the offer triggers a normal transfer instead.

I don't even see this massive potential are on about. He can dribble, a bit. He's kind of fast, hasn't shown any of the offensive intelligence needed to be a superstar attacker. This truly is a waste of club funds and if we keep this up we won't be getting to the pinnacle of the european club game in a long time.

I don't think football works like that though. Teams defend as a unit and attack as one. You can't just insert a player who got 25 goals I order to increase ours by 25. Martial can improve our attacking unit, meaning goals for him, and more for the existing players we have too.

 Woody and LVG, you fecking idiots! You fecking morons! You've gone pissing away €50m on a teenager who's playing for the same club Falcao did before he joined us!! Have you totally lost the concept of money? You're paying 3x the money anybody would pay for the players out there. Not one single club on this planet is even close to our spending on single players that are either rejects or prospects from minor leagues

The thing that makes me totally mad about this is YOU GUYS actually had all that money put away! You even could have approached a player like Pogba!!!! God, you with that money you could probably just look a little bit deeper down the pocket and have a go at Messi/Ronaldo.

A player like this is NO MORE THAN €20m if he has shown stuff like Cristiano Ronaldo on a daily basis!! I mean, how dumb can you get? We can kiss any player goodbye for the next decade because we're going to be totally skint. This one is going to be a classic that people will talk about a hundred years from now. So nice one lads!! You've just done it! I need to get out of here, I'm getting a severe headache :wenger:

People should stop with those addons, it's not like we pay them already. Especially for a 19-year-old it could be stuff like if he wins a Ballon D'Or or if he scores 30 goals or wins a CL title...
If he achieves that kind of stuff we will happily pay that money, it makes sense for Monaco to include that kind of stuff for such a young talent, maybe he will be the next "insert exciting muppet transfer here", but it's also not unlikely that we will barely pay anything of those addons. So the fee we are paying right now are 36M pounds, which is already high and enough to bash us anyway.

Indeed it could and I'm assuming his fee was £36m. If we end up paying more then that'll be good news.

8 in his last 12 games. Could be a young player who has just turned the corner.

With due respect, if LVG thinks this lad is worth that kind of money, then I'm inclined to take his opinion over any of ours. You can say what you will about LVG but he isn't a mug when it comes to spotting potential. He's an idiosyncratic old bastard, but he certainly isn't a mug when it comes to this.

This is just something I've been thinking about plenty lately:

We're a rich club, just about the biggest turnover of the lot, etc. But we do have disadvantages when competing for players with the Spanish giants - and even the London based English clubs.

So, for my (or rather the Glazers') money, we need to find a niche of some kind - a way to use our wealth intelligently, if you will. Paying shitloads for talents of this lad's ilk is one way to go. It actually is. Wenger had the right idea back in the day, but we are able to pursue a similar scheme on a higher level than Arsenal were - because we're feckin' loaded.

We need to buy shrewdly, of course - we can't splash this kind of money on random talents. But we can use our financial muscles to secure genuine talents/top targets that other clubs aren't willing/able to dish out that much money for. We can, in a word, outmuscle the competition when it comes to a certain category of players. And I, for one, would MUCH rather we tried this than any sort of Galactico replica.
It is definitely more exciting, although the risk is way higher (yep, I know that Di Maria was supposed to be risk free, but still the point stands).

... £36m for a 19 year old - criminal? I guess you missed the last few transfer windows then?

My comment was not about Martial specifically, but concerned United's net spend on additions so far to your last title-winning squad. Having started with a title-winning squad and then spent such vast net sums on changes to it, most neutral observers would have expected the squad to continue either winning the league title or - at the very least - strongly challenging for it. But so far you've finished 7th and then 4th.

If you don't see the huge discrepancy as verging on criminal, then I'm just baffled.

So, we have been (probably) on the look out for a attacking player all the window, having lost Falcao,RVP and Di Maria and on the last day of the window, we end up with no one but a unknown 19 year old. I don't care about the money. If he was one for the future, why now, rather than early in the window. And I don't believe the BS that Monaco missing CL was the opportunity for us to sign. What if they did qualify, we would have ended up with no other striker?

The reason I call this panic buy is because we have been looking for a striker all through the window and we just ended up with Martial and no other option this late in the window.

LVG has made no secret that we have been after a pacey player to add to our attack. "Why now", why not now? Why would Monaco let a player go if they can still qualify the CL, they would be losing one of their better players when they need him and they could still offer CL football so it would be harder for the player to push for a move. Transfers don't just happen, they take weeks / months of planning and negotiating and you don't just pursue your top target, you go for multiple targets. So maybe he wasn't our first choice target? Maybe we were holding out for a deal for Bale, Pedro or Ronaldo but when we couldn't get any of them or decided against the cost of those deals we moved on to the next set of targets. We probably pursued a deal for Mane and Martial (plus others), but Martial was available for the right price at the right time. I seriously doubt Woodward and the team woke up yesterday and thought "we lost to Swansea, we're not going to make it, who can we get... Martial, ok pay whatever"

I am very sad if the current reports about Mendes having his fingers all over this deal is true. I think we should do anything to avoid getting involved with him again. Never works out for us, no matter what.

the only journo in world football who has said he wasn't £26m.

You win Glaston.

We bow down to your greatness.

Can you not read? The well-respected journo in question did say the fee was £26m with potential add-ons.

Concern? I also saw another poster use the word 'annoyed'. Those really aren't the words you're looking for. The laughing green smiley you ended your post with would be more appropriate.

It certainly seems to wind you all up when we spend money.

No doubt you'd prefer us to return to the days of spending our money on debt payments.

Now that was something you could genuinely laugh at.

If he is a player that fits in the gaffer vision of the team then I'm ok. Money for United isn't a problem. The screaming children on this forum should pick up the dummy and chill. Potential and young players is United always has been. Rooney. Ronaldo giggs scholes Becks seriously calm down.

This is lazy stuff from the club doing business this late in the window.

All this talk of us waiting on Monaco CL Qualification is probably leak from us to save our face on what looks like a panic buy. What would have happened if Monaco did qualify for the CL?. We would have missed out and start the season with one recognized striker?.

If Monaco had qualified we might have decided to hold on to Chicharito and not let Januzaj go on loan. Then we may have pursued him next summer.

How is that difficult to imagine?
