What do think of the (supposedly) imminent signing of Anthony Martial?

I like all of this accounting professionals on this site.. If he is the right player no worries if he is a flop and we don't qualify for the cl then changes will be made but I trust Woodward and LVG although I don't particularly like the type of football we are playing but again I trust both of them.

Anyone else seeing people on twitter show a video of Martial 'missing' an open goal and celebrating, which he obviously scored? Is there something I'm missing here?

Is this some sort of optical illusion, it looks like it clearly goes in..

So, it took us the best part of 2-3 months to sign 1 striker?. Are we to believe this?. We knee RVP was going to be sold and falcao not renewed, yet we wait till the last day to get a striker in. Its the same with the GK situation. It's as if Woodward has a deal with sky to keep things interesting on deadline day for them to get some news!!

Yes, because we aimed to get the best players in the world like Benzema or Bale or Neymar... and you try as hard as you can to get them because those transfers are not easy and take time but eventually you have to give up and sign your other targets. What would you have us do? sign 2 or 3 young or 2nd choice stikers and then discover "Real will let Benzema go for £70m" too bad we spent our budget already!

cool story bro

Who? Surely better than Rooney atm right? :) Only immediate concern is he seems to like to drift into the space that Memphis operates in.

Its brilliant naming all those players.

But none of them were first teamers when they were loaned.

Its generally a rule that first team players dont come back from a loan as its usually a precurser to a transfer.

Genuinely confused.

Wilson, depay, Januzaj, periera, martial

Do we now have the world's most promising young attack...

I think it's best to be realistic about what martial can contribute straight away as there will be a lot of pressure plus moving abroad at short notice at a young age is going to be a big transition... But an exciting prospect and as I say the potential in our young attackers is immense

IMO, looks like he missed the goal and the rebound from the ad board shook the net to make it look like he scored.

It seems that way to me as well. I hope I'm wrong though.

Henry hardly set the world alight in the French league though (albeit as a winger) and Cantona wasn't brilliant either. Not saying i think Martial will go one way or the other, but scoring bucket loads in France is not a pre requisite for Premier League success.

Januzai is young and needs 1st team experience, with Martial coming in, Mata, Herrera and Rooney could all be competiting for the 10 spot. He isn't going to get any better sitting on the bench.

Aaaand we're back to him being the only journalist who said it was £13m upfront.

You're kidding yourself if you think half of the fee for a player as established as Soldado at the time was based on clauses. That does not happen in football.
Back then it was reported that Spurs agreed to pay €12m up front and three installments of €6m each (see here, for example: http://www.totaltottenham.com/news/transfer-news/spurs-land-roberto-soldado/). Which is not an optional add-on; the story was, back then, that Valencia refused to budge for anything than the full amount of the release clause. That the fee was incentive-based is actually a more recent rumour that popped up when it became clear that Spurs were trying to get rid of him.

If he is a player that fits in the gaffer vision of the team then I'm ok. Money for United isn't a problem. The screaming children on this forum should pick up the dummy and chill. Potential and young players is United always has been. Rooney. Ronaldo giggs scholes Becks seriously calm down.

I think if you place high hope on a no name youngster simply because he has potential just shows either you are naive or are just attempting to make yourself fee better when you go to bed at night.

CR7, Giggs, Becks and Scholes are rare species and basically were groomed by a great manager of all time. Three of your examples were not signed as a 19year old. They all joined when they were 12-13 year old and Giggsy already was feared by any team by the age of 17-18.

CR7 was not signed because he had potential to save our season or a desperate move to rescue our goal scoring dire situation. He played us and the team and manager had first hand knowledge of him when signing him. SAF had made him what he is today

Nah there would be a delay if that happened cause the ball is going that fast, not to mention the angle it's going at making it near impossible to rebound towards the net.

It's a goal.

Yeah it goes in. You see the back of the net move.

BBC sporf trying to be funny...

You're an absolute moron if you're writing off a player you've clearly never seen play because of the fee.

The rebound from the shot at that angle would not come back to strike the net. It looks like a cleverly cut troll vine, but it clearly went in.

I'll be totally honest never heard of him or watched him play (other than the YouTube video I've just watched). From reading bits in here and else where he looks fast and has good control but lacks passing vision and any defensive contribution. Based on this could we not just play Valencia up front!?

How are you classifying him a no name youngster, when he was wanted by barca and reports say we've scouted him for a while? Just seems a little harsh is all.

Just cause he might not be the next giggs, doesnt mean he won't go on and become an excellent player for us.

Martial has pace, good ball control and good shot, Valencia only has pace.

Thats great, but you really should of directed that point to someone who was taking part in that aspect of the discussion.
Because i wasnt.

Yes. But LVG (Chich and Januzaj) doesn't rate them anyway, if they were going to be sold/loaned. So we would have ended up with just Rooney/ Hernandez for the season. What I don't understand is, after all the talk of getting business done early, after last season, we still find ourselves in a terrible deadline day scenario. Do we seriously have to believe that we had to scout and negotiate with players/clubs for 2 months to sign a player?. Wasn't this supposed to be done at the end of last season and the players signed and be ready for the season?.

I do think LVG doesn't rate them or likely Chicharito, but that doesn't mean we will sell him if we didn't get Martial. Doesn't it also seem coincidental that we agreed to Chicharito's move only when it seems personal terms are agreed with Martial and not before?

The ideal case is of course to have the players in asap. But we are talking about clubs negotiating just because we want to do business early doesn't mean we have a right to expect it to conclude early. Look at the DDG case, why didn't Real get the deal done early? Because we wouldn't sell early. It is that simple.

'No name' translates to 'I never heard of him' in this thread. Glad to help.

Insane money for such unproven talent.

I really do question our transfer policy.

No need to resort to abuse!!!! There is something called smart buying and if you're convinced this is a smart buying then it's your opinion. It's not mine.

I am not judging this player per se, but to be paying this fee for a potential hoping he would be saving/improving our attacking is a dire action with no well thought plan!!! LvG had the whole summer to consider our options but unfortunately these plan to buy potential on the last days before close of window cast doubt in our minds.

If you can't accept some civil and reasonable discussion, then you shouldn't be on the forum.
