What do think of the (supposedly) imminent signing of Anthony Martial?

To be fair, even if you don't care about how much cash the club is splashing out as it is supposedly not from your own pocket, you should still care about how it is spent. Since we don't have an infinite amount of money, you should still be concerned about how it is allocated and whether there are wiser decisions that can be made.

I am not saying that this is not a good choice, but it is up for debate and the money is not irrelevant.

And started only 24 of them. Which is less than the amount of games Monaco played last season.
A bench warmer that starts 24 games. Sounds legit.

So it is only £36m which isn't so bad, though still a lot. Considering he could be worth 80m 4 years from now if he fulfills his potential and becomes anywhere close to what henry was or having he impact Rooney had, so its not so bad. And really, fans shouldn't care about the price at all when you have the financial power united has. Better then sitting around, doing nothing and letting the players go to other clubs. Shows if we want a player, we won't let a set price stop us.

I think supporters don't enjoy it enough. Yes, it's silly money but these plasic clubs are distorting the market. While Sir Alex talked about Value, Chelsea signed Hazard and we missed out on others too - at a time we should have been rebuilding. I think we've been slow to react at times allowing Modric all those years ago, to go to Spurs rather then taking a chance. Once the team are playing and you see what a player can bring to the team - then the fee melts away into the background. People don't care anymore because they're being entertained. We need more - but hopefully it's a good start. Have absolutely no idea. He seems like he can play a few positions so that's good but I still think the ball comes back too easy.

It's 50m euros. Which becomes 50m pounds. Which becomes 80m euros. Happens in every single transfer we make from Europe. People are feckwits.

With all being said about the fee, this is what our scouts get paid for. If they deem him a top talent with good determination to make something of himself i would trust them, we don't just spend random on a young kid, there got to be the same potential as we saw in Shaw. And if he goes on to be a top striker, then nobody will care about the price.

The thing i Wonder now is where this puts Wilson.

Why do people insist on sensationalising some of the fee's, his release clause is £36m and United have paid it.
So the fee is £36m? I don't have time and only watch twitter feed where i saw €60+20m and almost colapsed...

I've seen him a little bit and quite liked what I saw, but just been talking about him to my friends that follow L1 much more and they've got excellent things to say about him. My Lyon supporting mate (Lyon sold him to Monaco a little while ago) was annoyed to see him go at the time as he had progressed through the ranks but couldn't break into the first team, so when Monaco came in with a 10M offer, they had to say yes. He's developped quite well at Monaco apparently, taking Berba's spot in the last season, and is a mix of power, pace and technique, understands the game and has an excellent attitude (saw a couple of posts on here suggesting otherwise, curious as to where that comes from). Basically, they're adamant we've signed an excellent rough diamond who still has a lot of work to do before becoming the real deal, and the fee is a bit silly but when you see Thauvin leaving for 20M or whatever, they feel the fee for Martial is correct :D (just kidding of course, it's huge for an unproven talent)

Rather happy with the transfer myself, hope he makes it here!

He got subbed on in the second half of one game and subbed off 30 minutes later for "tactical reasons"...doesn't sound too good!

This has me really excited. He fits the profile of the striker we need long-term, he's versatile enough to inject some more pace into our team up front or out wide and he's a signing completely out of left-field.

He was a starter in the second half of the season... The kid was 18 last season, so you'd expect him not to be starting at the beginning.

If you start less than 50% of the matches, then what you are.

To his credit though, he played far more since January than he did on the first half of the season.

Every year you could say this about tons of players, and how many of them reach it? 1?

It seems to me that everytime we're linked to a young black forward someone on here mentions 'attitude problems'. I've seen it lately with Lukaku, Berahino, Benteke and Mane

I could easily see us loving Martial the same way we loved this one:

So the English journos are saying £36m, whereas the French journos seem to be quoting much higher figures..

All a bit mental and a massive risk but certainly exciting. Really looking forward to seeing him in action. Huge pressure for the lad. Hope he has big shoulders.

Judging by the reaction on this forum, I'd say he's very unknown.

Just because you've heard of him doesn't mean that should be the standard case! Loads of players play in the CL every season, you can't expect everyone to remember them all... also, (genuine question) where has he been talked about as one of Europe's best? Would be interested to see that... is it just French journo's or from all across Europe?

I just don't see how. I don't watch French football and don't pay a great deal of attention to European football in general and even I know of him.

Interesting that over the last month this lad hasn't been mentioned in the usual list people pumped out when they said the quality wasn't available and we should wait.

Don't know much about him but he sounds like Welbeck

I think it is more cause Ranieri (former manager of Monaco) mentioned his mentality or something like that. It probably doesn't mean much, Ranieri is weird.

Hopefully he's what Welbeck should have been. A much better Welbeck.

Barely heard anyone talk about him on here or anywhere else, but suddenly he's a "once in a generation" talent. Okay then.

I found this: http://www.goal.com/fr/news/29/ligu...naco-ranieri-martial-doit-changer-de-mentalit

The google translated version of Ranieri's comments:
"It is a great young with a great future, but it must change its mindset. Sometimes the French mentality is ok ... Today I play well, maybe tomorrow ... No, you must be very hard every day. I talk a lot with it may just be a good one. player L1 or become a champion, because it can become the holder anywhere. It is very good but in football that is not enough, you have to be very good every day in training, every time you'll play every night when you sleep."

11 years to the day that we signed Rooney, for marginally more, and a year older. The price isn't unheard of exactly.

What proven player is there? Anyone who watches french football says Martial has got way more potential then lacazette and is ridiculously talented, but just not as developed yet. Apart from lacazette, we'd be buying some average player to play up top for us. So why settle for mediocrity and some mid table player when we can sign someone who has it in them to become the best striker around? You either get talents like martial young, or watch barca/Madrid/city/Chelsea buy him later for even more and he tears up the league like aguero is after he develops a bit. Even now he gives us great pace and ability to go past players. He's not a top player yet, but if you watched him against Valencia in both Gamez, its clear he's a good player already who can make an impact just as Rooney did 10 years ago.

This is exactly the point.

We've missed out on the top young talents in world football these past few years because we have pissed our pants at the prospect of going big and going early.
These players then go on to prove their potential and get transferred to the sugar daddy clubs for 10 times what they would of cost a couple of years before because they don't care about developing players, let some other cnut do it and then they buy the outcome.
Everyone is going on saying "sign Bale for 80 million" "sign Harry Kane for 50 million" etc.

The time to sign these players was when the likes of spuds were first interested, and perhaps being a little bit less afraid to give these players a chance.
The one time we've done it in recent years was Pogba, who plain on the nose on your face was a good player and we fecked it up.

Great news. Always excited when we buy expensive young talent. If he goes on to fulfill his potential, the size of the fee will become irrelevant.

He won't play instead of Rooney, that's completely out of question. Mata will probably go centrally, Januzaj will depart on loan and Martial will be on the wing with Depay occupying the other one. This way van Gaal will be able to finally feck off Herrera to the fringes.
