What do think of the (supposedly) imminent signing of Anthony Martial?

If I'm honest, haven't really seen him play as I'm not really an observer of the French League and I only saw a few Champions League cameos of him which I can hardly remember.

Who would you Caf-Experts compare him to and what would he add to our side?

Judging by the reaction on this forum, I'd say he's very unknown.

Just because you've heard of him doesn't mean that should be the standard case! Loads of players play in the CL every season, you can't expect everyone to remember them all... also, (genuine question) where has he been talked about as one of Europe's best? Would be interested to see that... is it just French journo's or from all across Europe?
He was a bench-warmer for most of the time last season if I am not mistaken.

Not exactly an unknown, but not near as established as the likes of other young players that get repeatedly mentioned in this (and other forums).

We pick loads of young talent up. Not got a problem with the player, it's the money involved that should be spent on a ready now player.
What proven player is there? Anyone who watches french football says Martial has got way more potential then lacazette and is ridiculously talented, but just not as developed yet. Apart from lacazette, we'd be buying some average player to play up top for us. So why settle for mediocrity and some mid table player when we can sign someone who has it in them to become the best striker around? You either get talents like martial young, or watch barca/Madrid/city/Chelsea buy him later for even more and he tears up the league like aguero is after he develops a bit. Even now he gives us great pace and ability to go past players. He's not a top player yet, but if you watched him against Valencia in both Gamez, its clear he's a good player already who can make an impact just as Rooney did 10 years ago.

SkySports news say £36m - that sounds about right.

Well, about right for a fee that's still a bit mental.

What?!

LvG all but confirmed that we weren't in for Pedro. It was only the media who made up the narrative that Woody messed up the negotiations. And now the same media are doubting the narrative they made up. Ridiculous.

Which then leads to the question, why?

He's even shit at bench warming guys, we are a joke of a club. An embarrassment.

Jebus, we are not signing him for €80m. One source says it might get that high with bonuses if he's a success.

People will still say we paid €80M no matter how it works out although I don't think we would spend that much on a 19-year-old albeit he's one of the best talents in all of football.

Always exciting with a new talented youngster...but is this what we need? For this kind of money, we surely could have bought a decent striker?

Theoretically he is everything we are looking for in a forward to replace Rooney.. fast, strong, dribbler and decent shot off either foot. Perfect modern day forward.

But clearly no one has seen enough of him to say whether he is actually that in reality. Tbh I think we had no choice in going for a signing like this.. it was either a punt like this, or signing someone established but not quite good enough to play for us like a Kane. This would also have been a waste of money in the long term.

This kid I assume is someone who is seen as a potential world beater and capable of scoring 30+ a season, LVG said unless there is someone who can genuinely improve the team he won't bother buying them. Clearly this kid is being bought because he is very highly thought of .. not a panic buy.

I prefer signings like this.. signing potential top youngsters is the United way.

I've seen him a little bit and quite liked what I saw, but just been talking about him to my friends that follow L1 much more and they've got excellent things to say about him. My Lyon supporting mate (Lyon sold him to Monaco a little while ago) was annoyed to see him go at the time as he had progressed through the ranks but couldn't break into the first team, so when Monaco came in with a 10M offer, they had to say yes. He's developped quite well at Monaco apparently, taking Berba's spot in the last season, and is a mix of power, pace and technique, understands the game and has an excellent attitude (saw a couple of posts on here suggesting otherwise, curious as to where that comes from). Basically, they're adamant we've signed an excellent rough diamond who still has a lot of work to do before becoming the real deal, and the fee is a bit silly but when you see Thauvin leaving for 20M or whatever, they feel the fee for Martial is correct :D (just kidding of course, it's huge for an unproven talent)

Rather happy with the transfer myself, hope he makes it here!

Well, about right for a fee that's still a bit mental.
It would still be the most expensive fee for a player who isn't even 20 yet.

It would be right-mental though, instead of the rumoured 60m+20m which was lunatic-mental.

Fecking hell. That is a lot of money for a youngster. Never heard of him. Anyone who has seen him regularly? Plus is this a panic buy because this late in the window with no one else interested in him makes no sense otherwise.
I think it's a panic buy, we have been scouting him and were probably going to leave him there for another year to see how he does but due to the lack of fire power up front it's accelerated this deal. It could be a stroke of genius or a waste of money. Hope he turns his potential into reality but I'm sure the scouting team at United will know exactly what they are getting and United wouldn't sanction the transfer if he wasn't good enough.

I've watched some videos. He's got pace, a good touch and can play across the front three. Good, hopefully now we have another option with some actual ability to run past a man. There may be hope for the right side yet.

He's not the striker I think we need. Not big enough to hold the ball up.

On what basis? I can give you Lacazette argument but surely not Vietto/Dybala, especially Dybala who at the moment look quite better than him.

Not saying that Martial won't become world class or anything, but it is borderline lunacity to pay 80m euros for a 19 years old kid who has proven slightly more that Wilson and around as much as Januzaj. We are talking for money that can bring you already world class players.

I hope that the fee is far less than it (although even half of that is still too much). Wasn't it rumoured that Monaco asked Chelsea for 40m euros and so Chelsea removed their interest?
Well my basis for saying that is that Dybala is a single-footed no aerial challenge winning striker more in the Aguero mold with twist and turn and finish to his game but reliance on his left-foot a bit too much while Martial is more two-footed and looks a bit more complete of the two. I might be giving a bit of sour grapes view on Dybala though but I think at 19, this kid has the potential to be a great signing for us and what I think separates this guy from other player is his directness while facing the opponent. Plus Dybala might not have wanted to leave the country as well.

I agree the price is expensive but I'd trust Marcel Bout and Albert Stuivenberg to have done their homework right and decide he's worth the money or has potential to be worth it. Chelsea backed off in Shaw's case too citing him as too expensive but we needed to replace Evra while they still had Azpi playing for them. In this case, they have Hazard and signed Pedro in place of him (and Luis in Shaw's case) but we probably are desperate to get him considering we don't have genuine pacey players playing for us bar Memphis (who doesn't look super pacey so far though). The point is we have to gamble. A lot of people were not sold on Shaw considering the price but he's starting to prove his worth. It could be very similar with Martial as well.

City seem to do all right with Agüero who isn't exactly a giant (three inches shorter than Martial).

I'm all for filling the team with pace. We've looked so labored at times, even Memphis doesn't seem as quick as I thought he was!

Very nice post. I like it.

We're due an attacking Frenchman

And started only 24 of them. Which is less than the amount of games Monaco played last season.

L1 seem to produce about 1000 young players every season who are going to be the "next big thing" - I'd be very happy if we got this lad for about 12 million on the hope he might turn into a very good player. Spending 36 million on the hope he might turn into a very good player is stretching it but...hey it's not my money. I can still go along with it. Let's see how he looks in two seasons.

Spending 36 million instead of buying someone proven and dropping him straight into the first team is ludicrous. Statistically...along with the other 99.9% of L1 who don't fulfill there hype...the odds are not in his favour.
