Anthony Martial

What do think of the (supposedly) imminent signing of Anthony Martial?

11 years to the day that we signed Rooney, for marginally more, and a year older. The price isn't unheard of exactly.
Well not marginally more if the 36m fee turns out to be correct. The initial fee for Rooney was 21m. Adjusting for inflation, it's similar but Rooney was more proven.

Looks like he'll become our 3rd most expensive signing ever. A teeneager with 13 goals in 64 games. I'm all for signing young talent, but we also need someone (or a few someones) capable of making a more immediate impact.

Sincerely hoping to be made looking like a real idiot with my quotes.

Barely heard anyone talk about him on here or anywhere else, but suddenly he's a "once in a generation" talent. Okay then.

Kind of how it works.

There'd probably have been a lot of green smileys in this thread if this was about him signing for Liverpool.

He won't play instead of Rooney, that's completely out of question. Mata will probably go centrally, Januzaj will depart on loan and Martial will be on the wing with Depay occupying the other one. This way van Gaal will be able to finally feck off Herrera to the fringes.

This. He is a genius. Best we sell him, so we can regain some of that money. We have to think about the net spend FFS.

I found a video of him at Lyon before his move to Monaco with a lot of youth football footage if anyone's interested. That first touch

He was like 20 Million € less, is English and had a way better first season. This kind of money for Martial is mental and there's no point denying it. Its a huge gamble, you can afford a gamble, but its a gamble nonetheless. There's a big chance he will never be worth this kind of money again.

Even that is better than the current set-up, at least we'll have two pacey wide forwards.

But I wouldn't expect him to become a starter soon. Maybe in the second half of the season but even that is ridiculously optimistic.

I would prefer we buy someone older with a good track record of performances and goals. I'm sure this player has a lot of potential but I want Rooney having to fight for his place and replacing Hernandez with a 19 year old talent suggests he will be remaining untouchable under Van Gaal.

Exactly. Everyone would be laughing their asses off. That's exactly what is happening in every European football forum right now by the way.

Is he better than Origi?

No. Around the same level maybe, but less proven.

Finally!

Don't care much about the fee. Ofcourse it's high but if we are getting him for 36mil,its because we couldn't get him for 30 or whatever and clearly rate him enough to pay up to get him. What's the point of being this loaded with cash if we don't splurge when we spot a player who we want?

Sorry but not a fan of this signing if it goes through, especially when you factor in the transfer fee being reported. Seems too risk-fraught of a signing. Good talent, but really raw, someone for the future and worth £12-15 million tops. You can talk all you want about potential, but the kid hasn't displayed anything on a consistent basis even in Ligue 1 to suggest he'll end up justifying the incredible fee. Ah well, maybe I'm just a bit too pansy. Perhaps the club sees different and he's the next Benzema or Henry. Meanwhile we need a consistent goal-source..

Absolutely shocking if the numbers are correct. Honestly if this goes through at the numbers being touted its a total contradiction on the transfer policy we've been fronting up until now. I highly doubt he is better than what we currently have.

Im sorry but im very worried for this current season. Our planning is shocking as its been left to manifest until last day of the transfer window. This is not the actions of the biggest club in the world. After losing Falcao, Di Maria, RVP, De Gea, Hernandez and Januzaj it would take Bale and Robben also for me to class this window as a success.

Of course he isn't, he's 19!

Origi was in Ligue 1 worst XI last season. Even RAWK is saying that Martial is better than Origi.

What has Origi exactly proven though?

We had a firing RvN that time. We have Rooney now!
Actually, Rooney did better than RvN in 2004/05: Van Nistelrooy was injured a lot and only scored 6 goals in 17 games in the league (and his CL stats were boosted by a four-goal haul against Sparta - loads of goals against poor European opposition away from home, sounds familiar?), Rooney scored 11 in 29. That kind of record from Martial would be absolutely fantastic but I can't really see that happening.

That gamble is not just on the money front. It is fine if we already had star players who were firing on all cylinders but fact is we need someone who can step in right away. Never seen the lad so cannot comment but I will surprised if he comes into a new league and immediately slots in. So not only might he never be as valuable, it will also leave us ruefully short this season unless we can get someone more established.

He was 6 or 7m pounds less... United deals in pounds :) But yeah, mental price, but it's a similar price to what we paid for an 18 year old Rooney 11 years ago ignoring inflation. We'll see but if he gets anything close to what people say he can be, then he'll be worth twice what we are paying now basically.

Missed today's drama due to work, but just saw this on football365:

"Reports everywhere say that they will pay £36m for Monaco's Anthony Martial, which is pretty sodding mad. Martial is a great prospect, but hasn't been mentioned at all this summer. Still, at least Ed Woodward's tactic of throwing all of his s**t against a wall saw some of it stick..."

Couldn't agree more.

Ok so English journos saying £36m which is still crazy but not that bad.

I like this deal better than Griezmann. His ceiling is unknown which makes the whole ordeal that much more exciting. Imagine if he really does turn out to be like prime Henry of the Invincibles. And just because someone is a passionate fan of our club doesn't guarantee success. Jonny Evans grew up being a United fan in a family of United fans, came through our system, loves the club, but it doesn't grant him some magical ability to perform better than he is capable of.

36m is a bit of risk, but considering our "netspend" we should be well able for that. It'll be steal if he turns out to be as good as some say. I say we risk it!
