If it were Pogba, who is an established player for France, I would agree with you but Martial hasn't been called up in a long while, I really think the injury is real (hopefully not too serious)

Perhaps he's not to keen on a roster spot under Deschamps?

So after all the pontificating after Wolves’s match, turned out he wasn’t even fit?

He’s been picking up quite a lot of niggles this season, hope it’s just new fitness regime taking its toll.

He was never married to Samantha. I always thought it weird that she gave herself his last name.

The goal was about 1 of 2 or 3 good moments for him. Overall as usual, a moments player.

Thought it was a fairly positive performance. Nothing special. Wanted to get involved and eventually did. Was disappointed when the ball was squared to him in the box and he just stopped and slumped when it hit the defender instead of chasing it down, but he made up for it with the goal.

Yes because our squad was creating chances full stop for him & rashford

These guys try to create chances themselvels whilst players like Aguero get tap in afte tap in from the rest of the team putting chances right at their feet. When that happens we can talk about how these players dont make runs etc - all i see is runs being made & later players stopping running to get the ball to feet so they can take on defenders themselves.

Rooney esque performance. Nothing worked for him yet he came out with a goal. Hopefully he can use this to improve his general play.

Good he scored in the end. He was close enough all game and as usual some fans couldn't wait to stick the knives in at half time.

Had a good spell in the first half where he was linking well with Shaw, him and Rashford were starved of the ball in the 2nd half but he scrapped well for his goal, hopefully he was just milking things as he was being subbed and he's not picked up another knock.

Sadly, I am starting to loose faith in Martial. Seemed totally unintrested today, and as usual he contributes very little other than a few situations where he carry the ball with pace. If he is to keep a spot in our starting 11, he needs to show improvement and contribute more often to our build-up play.

Said it at half time. Some people criticized him but he was on the verge of a goal/assist all throughout that first half, and got the goal in the end. That's the thing with Martial. He can frustrate but he's always productive in the end, which is rare for younger players. If he can sharpen everything up and show that consistency in his overall game, then he'll make that step up to the top level, but regardless of that he's still a very good and a very productive player.

Utter rubbish. Both him & Rashford struggle because there is absolutely no one who is creating chances for them. Instead they aim to make chances for themselves by taking on the defence by dribbling at them.

The only clear cut chance we got today was from Shaw providing a pass that none of our midfielders did the whole game.

Aguero is a better player than our strikers but no way would he score the same amount if goals because no one would create chances for him like silva, sterling, De bryune, sane & mahrez does for him.

Has no business being a guaranteed starter for us. I could say that about a few others tbh. The lack of urgency in his play is infuriating as is his determination to improve the weak aspects of his game.

Can anyone truly say Martial has improved or added elements to his game that weren't there in his first season?

Is at the point now but where he needs to start putting in consistent high class performances next season, or risk drifting into the perpetual potential Walcott realm.

Hold up mate, think you’re confusing Martial with Rashford here.

Thought his all round play was actually good today, especially his passing. It was a shit game for everyone.
On another note, it seems you lot expect players to perform at their best in vacuum. For most of the game, we could barely string passes together nevermind getting into good positions.
It gets to the point that u less he's fantastic, he will get criticism. Nothing in between. He was involved in almost all of our good play.

It's hard to properly judge a forward when the midfield is that atrocious. He got a goal in the end, but it was a poor performance by the him and the team as a whole. I guess it's a good thing when you still win as a team and score as an individual despite playing poorly.

Exactly - are forwards are spending most of their time trying to create chances for themselves by dribbling & beating their man because not a single midfielder creates enough chances for our strikers.

Rashford was poor all game apart from the moment that Shaw provided a pass that our midfield should be doing nearly every 10 mins. Martial was poor all game until he got a chance where pereira made a cross.

All other times its Rashford or Martial directly running at CB's trying to beat them in to space or trying to cross & pass to each other rather than any of it coming from our midfield.

Martial and Rashford are actually two thirds of our attacking trio, and both have to contribute far more than they have done lately if we are to compete for the title in the coming years. Two players with great individual abilities, but both struggle to contribute with anything else than sporadic bursts of individual brilliance. If we are going to dominate games, we need attacking players that are more involved i our build-up play. Rashfords often tries to make himself available for passes, but Martial does very little running without the ball.

Let me guess you want him to make the runs behind the defence that in fact non of our midfielders make

Our best passer & pass was shaw today. Pereira made a good cross & martial scored too.

I just wish he showed a bit more intensity and instinct. He is clearly very talented but if he learnt how to work off the ball and get himself into more goalscoring positions he would score more than he does now.

So you answered my question. They have individual brilliance in short occasions. They don't do much else because our midfield don't create chances for them & that is obvious. Put aguero up front & what is he going to do? Tap in what exactly? Absolutely nothing because no one in our midfield creates chances.

Either our attackers create chances by themselves (your view of individual burst of brilliance) or absolute zilch because nothing else happens. If that doesn't work then they may force an error by pressing like we saw against PSG.

Yet people act like everything is layed out on a platter for our attackers when absolutely nothing is. No one is a good enough passer in our squad.

It is hard to properly judge a midfielder when the defence is atrocious with the ball in their feet. It is also hard to properly judge a midfielder when the attacking trio rarely offers any threat to the opponents defence and allow them to press high. The entire team was poor today, and Martial was part of the reason.

What's will all Walcott stuff today. He had a decent game. Was active throughout.

I don’t think he’s anything like Walcott in any tangible sense, I’m using Theo as a standard bearer for the type of player perpetually on the brink of “fulfilling his promise” but never actually improving...

Both Rashford and Martial are approaching this threshold, but I do at least feel Marcus is showing improvement year on year. Certainly his goal tallies bare this out. But he needs to make the jump up to Kane consistency soon to justify his place, for sure.

It’s not a dig, it’s just a fact of development for any young talent (Ronaldo was there in 2005) but eventually there has to be a step up. Or else there is just stagnation... a la Walcot.

Martial and Rashford were starved of the ball. Almost completely. Its to their quality they made use of the limited opportunities and got us the win whilst their opposite numbers couldn't. Is there room for improvement? Obviously yes but don't say they offered no threat.

Martial & Rashford are apparently reaching this unfulfilled potential threshold after not even a half season under ole

I can see why people used to call our fans as glory hunters

Decent game but he really needs more intensity. It's like he's uninterested unless the ball is within 5 feet of him.

I cannot see that you made any questions in the post i quoted. Nobody has stated that our midfield or defense is world class, but some people are questioning Martial and his contribution to our attacking play. He has great individual abilities, but often chooses not to utilize it. He is mostly standing still at the left wing, and most of the times he kills the tempo in our attack when he receives the ball. I cannot see why you keep referring to Aguero, as Martial and Rashford play different roles than him. Rashford and Martial is supposed to be our version of Sane and Sterling, with Lukaku playing the role of Aguero.

Not quite at the races today, but people saying he was terrible is way over the top. Looked a threat and had some decent ideas. We didn't really click today as a unit, but still enough quality to provide more of a cutting edge than Watford.

Did Rashford or Martial even get into any one v one situations throughout the game? Our midfield was an embarrassment today...no control.

Hard to blame either him or Rashford today with that dire midfield behind them, at least they scored.

He looked a bit rusty but not static today . Hope that knock at the end wasn't serious

I thought he was good today. Apart from his goal, he combined well with Shaw a few times to create openings down the left.

People talk about him showing "intensity" but that's never been part of his game whether he has a good or bad game. That's just Martial. Like Berbatov, he's style is a bit languid. It's take it or leave it because that'll never change
