His potential injury is doubly annoying, as I'd assumed his substitution was a sign he'd earned the nod for the Palace game. Now if he doesn't start we're gonna get pages of debate over whether he's been frozen out or just injured.

I've been saying that for months and got pelters for it on this forum! He needs to play away from the wing and with more freedom than 4-2-3-1 with a defensive leftback would afford.
As a winger, Rashford is superior. As a wide-forward it's Martial. Today, the latter was terrific. His performance hearkened back to the LvG days when the system was built around giving him the ball level with the box.
I think everyone understands that if he's not even on the bench against Palace he's injured though.
Biggest difference to his ability was that he was able to start more centrally and drift off to the wider areas to receive the ball; meaning he wouldn't be consistently and only ever hugging the touch line. It's why even if we weren't exactly playing it today; the 352 suits the abilities of Rashford and Martial to play in and around Lukaku & drift to the adequate wider areas when only it's worthwhile; if it's not then let the WB get the ball and support Lukaku once more.

Not gonna lie, I suspect Martial wanted to be done for the game so he has a higher chance of starting on Saturday lol.
He was good today as was pretty much every Utd player but oh my, CSKA were fecking terrible.
He would not start against Palace injury or not. After Rashford played almost full game against Southampton it was clear that Martial will start against CSKA and Rashford will again start on Saturday with Mattial probably coming from the bench.

This season he seems to be getting a lot better at playing more centrally. He was never bad at it but now he's getting his angles right, decision making is going for him. And his improvement on crossing is easily visible. He's putting in the effort in training and you can see the results on the pitch.
Be an absolute shame for him not to get called up to France team - his performances alone warrant it and Dembele is out. But, if he has a niggle, then hope they don't being selfish.

I think he keeps looking at the keeper until the last moment and chooses direction at the last moment too but he has to composure, balance and ice to pull that off. Hazard does something similar I think.

Mourinho should not replace him with Rashford immediately even if he is wank because he needs 3-4 regular starts to get into gear in the league, which is a different beast to the likes of CSKA. Its' a bit of a mismanagement in my opinion, but ok - if he has nailed a starting spot by December at most, its' all good.

I might have a little difference of opinion here. But credit where credit is due, Martial on the ball yesterday was a joy to watch. He was a man transformed, his close control and his dribbling skills were a joy to behold. I truly am excited to see how the boy matures and develops.
However, and there always is a however in any discussion, I did feel that he was a little bit undercooked in his positions as well as his off-the-ball movement. Case in point, in the first half, he passed the ball to Mkhi and then stood about 10 ft away from the box rather than dashing towards the goal/ making a diagonal across the passer to receive the ball. I often found him standing on the ground, not being an option to pass the ball to.
This has often been my criticism of Martial, he'd rather receive the ball in a stationary position than take the ball while running. This is not to say this is a capability differential, I've seen him control the ball on the move. But you'll notice that he would more often than not ask for the ball at his feet than point to the position he'll make a run towards. He really needs to improve on that front, any Mourinho team would have swift transitions between defense and attack, a static receiving body does not help in those cases.

I think his crossing and off-the-ball movement has significantly improved. He still Needs to work on his decision making as he often carries the ball too Long and loses it instead of going for simple passes to open up space to run into.
Mbappe is doing this quite effectly.
That said Martial has the potential to become one of the finest wingers worldwide. I would love to see him left and Rashford right with Mkhi in the middle behind Lukaku. That should be our front 4 for the next years.

Rashford started 3 games in a week against Everton, Burton and Southampton. If Martial is fit enough, he could certainly play. He's played more than once awesome for us many times.

Regarding his injury, Mourinho did say he intended to play him 90min but Martial was a bit tired. Maybe it's all it was, fatigue.
Well LVG always claims that it was 'him' who bought Martial for 'his successor' :-)
His penalty style reminds me of Cantona, straight back and sticks it in the other corner.
He was absolutely brilliant last night, one of the best performances I have ever seen from him. Love him in this form, hope he only was subbed last night as a precaution and he can keep on playing the way he is. We look a different side when he plays like he did last night.

I don't like this kind of stuff. It's happened a lot with regards to his promotion of young players too, but there has been an attitude to dismiss anything good that Van Gaal ever did here. He wasn't the best overall, and had many flaws, but we shouldn't discredit him for what he did do.
He bought Anthony Martial, United have never forced signings on a manager, and I doubt we'd have started with Anthony Martial. He may not have been the employee who first discovered him, but he would have definitely had the last word (on the football side at least).
If the intention was to give him 90 mins, i can’t imagine that he’s planning to involve him from start against CP.
It's unlikely. I think he'll need to come off the bench and get a couple of goals to start against Liverpool.

Well to be fair Lukaku as well as other key players such as Matic etc played the full game and they're expected to start against Palace.
Of course this is just me hoping that Mourinho might have changed his mind and intends to start him against Palace, especially after his run of consistently brilliant performances so far this season.
At some point rotating him will start getting silly.
