As long as Mourinho is the manager, it will be what it'll be. So no need to get upset, wound up about him not playing more. Accept the current mindset or just hit your head against the wall.

We are not a defensive team. And Martial doesn't have to only play in easy games with no pressure. He has stepped up many times in pressure games for us.

He isn't a defender though. He might score you a goal, if that's what you want.

The best form of defense is attack.

Why would you want your attackers to be good at 'getting back', 'work rate' etc... when the easier course is them destroying defences and put us a few goals up nice and early?

I want my keeper and CBs to sit down having a nice sunbath while the ball bounce in and out of the opposition's box, not the other way around.

Half of the caf are lapping the "look at all this defensive work this attacking player is doing" though. Because they have invested themselves too much into the new-ish manager and have probably warrior'd through too many debates on the internetz to defend him that they can't pull out anymore. Too far in.

I love a good pretentious post. Fans just can't have opinions.

We just won and this is still one of the most active threads, if anyone is dogmatic its the Martial fanboys

I quite like it the few times i'm right, so i'll repeat myself.

The way i see it, we're failing to take advantage of Martials positive form. He's mainly limited to substitutions and even when he plays extremely well it's not rewarded by giving him consecutive starts, which is only reserved for his first choices no matter how the performances is (see rashford against Everton, rewarded by start in the cup and start in the following league match). It's not like he's involved in the Premier League as it is.

As soon as his substitutions stop coming off, he'll have even less time on the pitch as there will be much less pressure to introduce him, and sooner rather than later he'll be dropped from the starting lineup in the CL as well.

He'll push for a move, and get it, during the summer, and he can go on and try his best somewhere else

My hope is that we end up getting Antoine and that we can have a more dynamic trio up front, which we'll benefit greatly from

He did brilliantly as a sub against Swansea and was rewarded the following week with a start against Leicester.

If he plays well in Moscow he'll keep his place in the team IMO.

I'm not sure it's as dependent on the form of the attackers as it is the fullback he deploys at LB. If it's Blind, I think he's fine with starting either Martial or Rashford. If it's Young, I think he's always going to gravitate towards Rashford just because he's more comfortable with Rashford's ability to cover for Young. At this stage of his career, I doubt Jose wants Young to start 2 games a week so I imagine based on the current rotation, he'll continue switching out Blind/Martial (and occasionally Shaw in League Cup/FA Cup) and Young/Rashford until an injury or the fixture list compacts.

Happy he didn't come on during that shitfest.
He's better on the left than Rashford and should be starting most weeks.

It's clear that our setup in some games or some parts of the game is defensive.

I'm not disagreeing generally with what you're saying. Wanted Martial actually to start today because of his form but since the game unfolded like it did today I didn't see much sense in bringing him. We lost the battle in the midfield and our attack was cut off so I didn't mind keeping Rashford in the team. To be honest, I would be more pissed if Martial was brought in for the last minute or two as a tactical sub.

Didn't say that he only needs to play in games without pressure, only that he should have played more in games before where we didn't need to be so defensive. To start in those games or to come way before he did.

Based on his form and what he showed this season he deserves to start/have run of games in the future regardless of pressure that our defense might face.

Yeah, I agree that it makes sense to start Rashford if Jose wants to pair him with Young on the left. Rashford did very well defensively to cover for Young, especially in the second half.

That being said, Young is a liability in defense and is definitely not that good in attack to even indirectly influence the choice between Rashford and Martial for the left wing spot.

If Jose chooses Rashford over Martial because he's worried Young's defensive limitations might cost us, then he shouldn't start Young at all.

I like how we're making up more things. It's a competition between the two (1/6 starts vs 5/6 starts and 300mins PL football more), Mourinho just has so much higher expectations for Martial, it's because he wanted to play Young so he has to play Rashford

It's simple, he has no long term plans for Martial at Manchester United.

It is looking that way sadly.

Even if he doesn't start against CSKA in Moscow he will get at least 10-15 minutes there.

You're a man on a mission, that's for sure .

Not if we're defending a narrow lead. If he is to come off the bench he has to hope we're comfortable or have a comfortable lead otherwise he'd sit the whole game out.

Yes.

But come on, all the priceless comments, it's because of higher expectations, it's because of this, it's because of that, xyz defensive stats, it's tudelu

People are coming up with so many insane suggestions, completely ignoring the obvious.
Obvious is he wants to sell him? Not sure I agree.

Martial just has to hung in there waiting for those pity subs when Mou feels like it

No point arguing with that guy, he’s made up his mind. We’ll see what he says when Martial is still here next season.

It looks like it but then again who knows for sure ?

He's played a total of 122 minutes in 6 games in the PL so far. And despite doing (very) well whenever given the chance, he never seems to be rewarded for it. It's obvious Jose does not like the boy.
No, it isn't. And even if he doesn't like him, and does sell him, who gives a shit? I've seen far better players than Martial come and go over the years and the club didn't cease to exist.

The club won't seize to exist if Mourinho is sent packing either. We'll most likely do just fine. But yes, many here do care about a sensational talent at our club. And rightfully so.

Sensational? One good season, one crap one. Looked great against Burton. You people are nuts.

That's madness given he's been brilliant.

Martial will never get sold. Why must we endure such a pathetic discussion every time he doesn't fecking play a match ? I saw Herrera, our POTY of the year last year started only one game and get scraps of minutes and we never see this pathetic moaning about him not playing.

Second episode of the massive meltdown that happened after the Madrid game, and it'll repeated throughout the whole season every time a game passes without him playing. He must play every minute every match or the manager hates him and he'll get sold.

I'll say it again. Some here are worried about Martial's future more than the club itself, as if they're supporting Martial FC not Man United FC.

Yep, I despise his defensive mentality and I'm not too fond of his personality either. And what's the big deal? As you said, the club wouldn't cease to exist.
If you can't see the difference in keeping one of the most successful managers in the world at our club, and keeping a kid who might be good or might not, then there's no point discussing this any further.
