If it was a case that he was looking to sell Martial to then buy a Neymar or Mbappe then fair enough. But we all know it will be for the industrious Perisic, or another winger that will get back and act as a second fullback.

I’m sure if he could sign someone like Neymar, he would. It might also have something to do with the fact that someone like Perisic is an actual winger rather than a forward.

I also find it interesting that you ignored my post quoting you because it makes your original posts look completely wrong.

Our board should've known that's how he works. They too want quickly-realised success.

If we were toe to toe with City in the league table going into these final games and comfortably through to the next CL round then I’d be more onboard with his shortsighted approach. But we are not, and this approach isn’t giving us any quickly realised success.

In Martial, Rashford and Pogba we have three players that could go on to become the very best in their positions over the next 2-3 years.

We should be looking to help them achieve their potentials rather than signing inferior but more consistent replacements.

Selling Martial would be a horrible decision but not one I'd be surprised at from Mourinho. He wanted Perisic last summer, a player that plays his football predominantly on the LW, then in January he satiated that need for an experienced LW by getting Sanchez, a player he clearly has no intention of playing on the RW despite him having a good history there.

So we now have an overload of LW options and only Mata that plays on the RW, and if one of the LW options goes to enable the purchase of a player for the RW for balance, Martial will be sacrificed before Rashford because the latter is from the academy. The thing with the wide players we are being linked with is that they all play their best on the LW bar Willian.

It will be another short term instant fix that’s why.

Mourinho isn’t interested in buying players for the future which is evident with his pursuit of Perisic and aquisition of Matic and Sanchez.

A 22 year old Martial should not be sacrificed. Mourinho’s judgement is horrendous with youngsters (De Bruyne and Salah say hi).

When Mourinho inevitably leaves (probably summer 2019) we will be left with an aging group of his signings that will need replacing again.

What makes you think with your ability to tell the future that even if mourinhio bought lots of young talented players, they would stay for the best years of their career?
In a team you need a mix of ages, I can't think of a top team (barca, Madrid, bayern, and even city) who have a team full of young prospects, most of them have experienced players and that generally comes with age.
The romantic notion of buying a player at 18-22 and thinking he is going to say all his career is just blinkered.

Ps, as for sala, he has been pretty average at best all his career until this 1 season!

We will have one more year of Mourinho at best and people want to sacrify the obvious talents we have for it. In fact, what is even more damning is that they are aware of his recent struggles to work with and ability to realise the full potential of flair players that are now absolutely smashing this very same league. Mind boggling. Personally, I consider it as an incredible shortsighted view.

I wasn’t ignoring you, I was replying to someone else, so hold your horses :D.

I have no issue in Mourinho bringing in the Ibra’s and Sanchez’s. On paper they are players that make us stronger.

What I can’t get on board with is potentially selling players like Martial for someone like Perisic.

50% of the signings he’s made have no long term future at the club due to their age. Therefore my original point regarding short termism is still valid.

I agree. I hope to Christ no-one at the club is thinking about letting Martial leave. The idea of getting rid of the likes of Martial and Rashford for more consistent, less talented replacements in their mid-late 20s is horrifying, and plays into everyone's very worst fears about how Jose's likes to manage squads (something he has to his credit belied up to now with his use of the likes of Rashford, Martial, Lingard, McTominay and Lindelof).

That is such a stupid argument considering Rashford has got the most minutes under him and we have bought Lukaku, Bailly and Lindelof as long term options. Matic, Sanchez and Zlatan for the experience. Jose is trying to think about the present and the future at the same time.

Every single person associated with the club should be blaming him. It’s short term planning of the highest order.

Constantly signing 28,29 and 30 year olds just means that a major rebuild is required every few years.

If we sell Martial then we will regret it, mark my words. Mourinho won’t care as he will be at another club in a year or two and we will be left with a team of old farts to clear out again.
Agree.

Selling a young and very talented player to bring in another player nearing 30 would be extremely stupid and infuriating.

This must be the 5th time Jose is being criticised for selling Martial?
I wonder why we keep buying him back with Jose in charge.

So far, Sanchez hasn't even shown that he deserves a starting place on the left, so unless he hits some ridiculous form from now until the end of the season, I don't see how selling Martial could be justified.

Unless you're on about only attackers that isn't true. Valencia, Smalling, Herrera and Pogba have all played more (from outfield players only) since Mourinho became manager.

I suspect he is talking about appearances this season.

Pogba, Lindelof, Lukaku have many years left to play. The way Matic has been performing since his arrival justifies the fee and about 3 years is a long time in football. Exchanging Mkhitaryan with Sanchez is a good deal. The overall career Sanchez has had so far should buy him some time, next season he'll be delivering, IMO. Ibra is gone now. So overall we bought two players long term with Matic and Sanchez who are soon 30 years of age. Still, that's not too old, we should still get two oder three top years out of each of them.

I don't think acquiring Sanchez means that Martial is going to be sidelined. A whole season is very long and i think most people would agree that United need more firepower. I don't see any implication that one can assume that Mourinho is doing things short term.

This season Martial scored some very important goals and did get a lot of minutes. I'm not worried, but this long break seems to bring the worst out in people. We're in desperate need of more games so we can finally get over the Seville fiasco and see more of Martial, Pogba and Shaw.

Didn't read like that to me. Appearance stats are very misleading. Rashford has been - at worst - our first choice attacking sub most games this season so clearly he'd get the most appearances.

He has to an extent, being played on the right etc. Discussion in this thread is more about us going after another attacker in summer, which we've been linked with.

Scored 15 goals from the wing in 15/16 and 19 goals in 16/17 with plenty of assists in each season. That isn't average at best.

That's a decent return for a player playing in the 3rd or 4th best league in europe.

There is no one on this site who would have thought he would have the kind of season he is having, not even the club that he played at for the last few years otherwise he would have cost way over 100 million!

Whichever way you want to look at it, Rashford has appeared heavily under Jose.

Anyone who expected otherwise is deluding themselves.

If this a discussion about 'short termism' you cannot just dismiss Rashford’s participation under Jose, regardless of whether people expect him to play or not.

Didn't Mourinho state that he won't look for another attacking signing? I think if the opportunity arises like it did with Sanchez United will be right in the mix, but Mourinho won't prioritize some big acquisition. There are other priorities, such as 1-2 midfielders and at least a new fullback, which makes sense, IMO. Attackers are always the most sought after players and it brings clicks when the media link United with this or that guy. Still, one can speculate, of course.

Martial continued to feature in United games. He switched to the the right flank more often, ok, but players interchange positions anway. Martial decided important games for Mourinho, don't think his reward will be that he'd be gone. Never say never, i know, still i'd be very surprised.

Martial earned himself a consistent starting spot on the left after his performances, but was unfairly shifted to accommodate Sanchez. This in turn disrupted his form. I support Mourinho, but his handling of Martial leaves a lot to be desired, though it is not as bad as the papers make it out to be.

I like Martial's agent though. Dunno his name, the guy does sometimes talk up whenever Martial is benched, but he is always respectful of the club and does not go overboard like Raiola, neither does he seem to influence or force Martial into thinking to move. Think if we offer Martial an improved deal, neither him or his agent will make much of a fuss.

This happens every single time he doesn't play for a few games as a starter!

Martial is highly rated by virtually everyone at the club, that doesn't mean he gets to play 90 minutes every game, we have lots of forwards at the club and you can't fit them all in the them.

Rashford scored a brace against our arch rivals, sometimes you have to take a player onto the sidelines to show that there are other players that will step up if they get complacent. Competition like this is what top clubs have, unless you are a once in a generation player you won't get guaranteed starter status at clubs like Barca, Madrid, Bayern.

Happens week in week out. Very conspiracy theory's gone crazy thread. So many experts on how Martial feels and how Jose treats him etc. it's pretty tedious reading. Hope when he gets a new deal it'll all calm down a bit, but I do doubt it, as he's become a rod to beat Jose with...

Its interesting that people blame his not starting on accommodating this player and that player.

Simply put if this kid showed some desire and effort, some work ethic when we dont have the ball he'd be starting every game.
Every game.

Fact is hes a player that offers Zero when we dont have the ball and not much more when we do have it. He becomes a passenger. He is a lazy player. Hes got bags of talent. We know what he can do but he rarely does it. He just has to work harder. United just cant afford passenger's

Now im not saying we should sell him. Om fact i believe he has more to offer. . But our manager may not be the man to unleash the Martial inner monster

Ignoring the fact that your post is incredibly off the mark, I find it quite amazing how the solution according to you is to just "work harder".

Whats off the mark about it?

Work harder. Get better. Offer more to the team. Make yourself un dropable.

Thought we'd re-entered contract negotiations with him? The club know Martial is an important player for the present and future of the club, he's also a fan favourite and rightly so.

Martial literally does have to give that 10% extra. It’s something Lukaku would do. Maybe it is just not in Martial to express and exert himself that bit more.

Martial has become a proxy for criticising Jose and his use of youth. Forget the fact the nearest thing to letting youth go is allowing Pereira to go out on loan against Mourinhos wishes.
Its why a lot of posts start with "If Jose let's him go.." And they have full range to have a go at him as if he's already been sold.
KDB and Salah were God sends for such arguments. It makes up for the lack of Utd youngsters on the list.

Might be a bit too facile a point to make, but I'd wager that under Sir Alex, we'd have seen a very different type of Martial, one that's not as weak or unassuming mentally.

That, of course, applies to many others currently at the club, but it'd have been him and Rashford as a deadly duo by now.

I don't like all the pussyfooting around players we have nowadays, but I truly believe Sir Froggie had an aura about him that was reassuring to the players, even when he'd blast them.

Nice myth which has been busted. You are aware that Mourinho bought some young players too.

Wasn’t it that Jose hopes to get Peresic in this year. The board put a Kabosh to it last year as they didn’t rate Peresic and also they had faith in Martial and wanted Jose to persist with him. Add in Inter supposedly wanted Martial as part of any deal.
So rumour is with Peresic supposedly coming in Martial will make way.
Perišić rumours are dead I think or so it seems.
And as much as I'd like to see a Croatian in our club I don't think we should go in for him.

Saying all that Martial has been playing a lot this year and I don't think we'll sell him. It's just papers making things up imo.

Bale in?
No way instead of Martial.
Bale in at all?
No,absolutely not.
I'm absolutely convinced that this ( summer ) is the season we will get Bale , RM due a major overhaul and will move Bale on, I think it's nailed on he will come to us.
It's been another season where Martial has failed to make himself a guaranteed starter, looks like Jose is far from convinced by him and we honestly can't afford to wait another year for him to catch fire

Getting an injury prone has been (imo) instead of Martial would be one of the craziest decision this club has ever made. And one of the worse.
For someone who supposedly hasn't caught fire Martial has been very good.

I can't lie. Fans and pundits are really making me dislike Martial and Rashford. For the actual value theyve brought, they are vastly overrated.
