Much rather have him on the wing than Mata or Mkhitaryan. He offers so much more.

Maybe it's nothing...but one of the things I've noticed in Martial's game, that would frustrate me as a striker if I was playing with him... is his determination to drive forward until the very last minute THEN send a pass to Lukaku. Today was the second time I saw Rome get frustrated with Martial by not passing the ball sooner when Martial was attacking.

Yes, due to some miraculous dribbling against RM it resulted in a Lingard goal, and today it resulted in a corner that led to Rome getting a goal. It's still not good TEAM basketball.

I expect a winger (less so a striker) to be good at team ball and knowing how to set up someone else to score.

Martial has the heart of a striker, not a winger. I hope it's something he's still young enough to learn.

Well, not too worried bout that cause we signed him to play football instead.

Lol, apart from some choice words you are right.

He is 1 or 2 dribbles/steps over what is needed for a pass, cross or shot. Today he 'looked' good because he had enough chances to run and get involved with the ball but with his ability and speed, he should have had far more passing and shooting opportunities.

A quick pass after going past one is twice as effective as feinting and then dribbling past another. The most frustrating is that he does all the work by making the space but he then feints and tries to drive through the traffic when the chance is there for him to open his body up for a through ball or shot.

Although, you know, he does make me think of Kyrie Irving sometimes, so you may be onto something..

Thought he did well. Made things happen and was positive. His dribbling and ability to pull defenders towards himself is key for the other attackers as well.

Just as I suspected, Mourinho seeing Martial more suited to partner with Lukaku in 2 central forwards system, while Rashford style would mean he needs to play really wide not to overstep Lukaku.

Promising sign for Martial. He definitely looks sharper than last season. IMO he's getting closer to his form of his first season here.

Weird references to basketball aside, I agree with the gist of this post. I thought it was quite a selfish performance from Martial. Tried to beat too many men and didn't pass the ball well enough or often enough.

I saw someone say his role in the last goal was great in the match thread. Saw it...it was an ok run and a guff pass.

Good to hear he was better, but it's interesting to know what people think is great these days.

I'll take the inconsistency and the rough with the smooth every day of the week. He always looks dangerous.

Put faith in him Jose.
Martial just faces unfortunate circumstances. No matter how good or willing he might be or try to, he's simply not fancied by the manager. Sometimes it's not about how good a player is but how lucky he is.

Lesser players less deserving of playing time will have games ahead of him, it was it is.

Though hope something works out for him even by some miracle. Who knows, Jose might have a change of heart some days.

He's been pretty selfless for me of late. Looking to pass the ball/make a cross rather than go for the shot. Sometimes it doesn't come off but then there's times like the pass to Mata in the box.

Would have liked to see him start more than just the one game in pre-season as, when the subs happen in the second half, things tend to become a bit disjointed but he's handled himself okay and is looking happier.

He was the only player running at the opposition in the second half. We're so much more exciting with him in the team.

Was he selfish before?? I doubt that. He seems like a nice kid.

Noticed that every time we can't get our attack going, the ball goes to him so he can make some magic. The moment he gets the ball, he gets double teamed with Fellaini and Darmian switching to spectator mode.

Mourinho must not frustrate this boy.
I won't forgive him.

he's technically so much better than Rashford.

Martial is such a dangerous player when he runs ahead of the ball. Whenever he can get 1v1s it's a chance for us.

His mojo is coming back. Still a bit sloppy in his final ball, but he's starting to beat his players again. Good half from Martial, and a great bit of play leading up to the goal.

I actually feel like he's been a bit more selfish and I guess that's because he's been trying hard to make things happen. He's had a good pre season.

Though I feel like his "happiness" won't last much longer if he still doesn't get rewarded. Martial is in a situation where his abilities or whatever he's doing on the pitch aren't what will give him a shot but circumstantial luck which he doesn't have in his current situation.

It just turned out that Jose doesn't fancy him much which means plenty of his good performances won't be rewarded and that'll just affect him mentally. This pre season season alone I'm already getting that feeling already.

These past good showing in this pre season probably still didn't earn him a start against Real or or beginning of the season. It's all about how Mou wants to set up and Martial just doesn't fit there quite yet or maybe even ever who knows.

Should play as a pure forward, as in not having to track back. His quality needs to be utilised.

@Santoryo
I think your jumping into conclusions about Mourinho not rating Martial.
Every time Mourinho has praised him, he's mentioned that he's working harder in training.
That seems to have been the issue. He has always acknowledged his talent.

I think he will start against Madrid, I don't know why you lot are crying before the season's even started. Think it will be between Mkhi and Rashford on the right.

We'd be silly to loan him to Inter imo.
