I meant that it's mostly a good thing considering he's been out of our last two games injured.

Agree. Think a lot of people forgot what he was like at times last season too. Hell, I did, but I still remembered how insane he was at times. Just watch bits of this video, and think if we add that to our team, then we'll be great going forward.

Thank you for that. He's a joy to watch. Has to be an automatic starter when fit again. Simply too talented not to be.

And Martial hasn't really played much to even warrant a call given he's been in and out with niggling injuries.

Unless he was a player Deschamps relied heavily upon(which he obviously isnt), he was always going to get dropped with him hardly having played recently.

Fenerbahce 2:1 Man Utd
The only one who can hold his head up today. Mourinho will probably leave him out next game.

He was one of our better players but doesn't say alot. Good 30 odd minutes the rest he was pretty shit.

He gives himself no chance most of the time. Stay wide and wait for the ball to get to you Tony!

He needs to watch how Neymar plays.

Looked great in the first half when was drifting inside, didn't do much when he was out wide. Still maintain we should play rashford and martial as the strikers.

If he will be injured yes.

This stuff about Jose leaving him on purpose or not liking him is getting beyond crazy.

Wasn't bad today and this isn't down to him, but I hate how mourinho has our wingers playing personally. They aren't playing as wingers. They don't even start wide and cut in, they just roam inside and we end up being way too narrow and have everyone in the middle. Doesn't get the most out of him, doesn't get the most out of anyone actually. Martial can lead the line, or play as a proper winger/inside forward but he needs to hold his width so he has that space out wide to start running with the ball. Not drift into a #10 position where we end up having 4 players and nothing comes of anything.

Not a wide player.

Move him central. He'd be absolutely frightening in Liverpools side for example with Mane/Firmino either side of him and Coutinho in behind.

I'm surprised to see that I view tonight's game differently to others here. It kills me to say it, but in my eyes Martial is amongst our worst players this season. Even though Depay isn't better we should consider swapping them in their respective roles so our bright star from last year would be able to properly recharge his batteries.

I think people are forgetting how well he played out wide for us last season. Like Bosnian_Red said our wide players aren't really holding width at the moment, they're coming inside too often making it very crowded and difficult to pull things off. He is so much more comfortable starting wide with the ball in his feet and coming in, playing one twos or dribbling past players. I think he'll come back up to speed eventually, but from the way Mourinho talks about him, he seems him as a winger rather than a striker. When he mentioned about Mkhitaryan in the press conference, he said he needs to be better than Mata, Lingard and Martial.

We need him back to his best in order to do well this season.

I thought he was our only bright spot today as he created most of our dangerous situations. I hope he can stay fit for a while and become a regular and work his way back into the starting 11 for good.

I can see why Deschamps has dropped him from the France squad, he really is suffering from second season syndrome. If this is because of his shirt number change (which I doubt it is) then that is really childish.

The only positive tonight (though I thought Pogba looked good before the injury).

It's a nightmare for him though when Rooney is in the No.10 spot. It just automatically means he's not going to see much of the ball. A shame because it's usually a good idea to get your best player involved.

Thought he had a good game but was let down by his fellow players, particularly Luke Shaw who offered hardly anything resembling link-up play on the left flank.

I was hoping to see Rashford and Martial go up a gear after some fantastic displays last season, but both seem to be struggling to make it happen.

I'm starting to worry....

Looks absolutely nothing like last season....Looks so lethargic.....

My biggest gripe with him, that. He has this habit where he tries to make something happen and if it doesn't for whatever reason, he looks so disappointed and actually stops playing for a good few seconds. Like he just stops, doesn't try to follow up, doesn't chase the ball, doesn't do anything, he literally just stops while all the action continues to happen around him. Annoys the crap out of me.

When we signed him, someone commented that he is a bit unpredictable in the sense that he might play like a 80m player or like a 10m player. Last season he was the former, this season he is the latter. Hopefully he improves massively this season because he's got so much talent.

One of his advisors gave an interview on a french radio station. He basically said that losing the number 9 affected him but only for a couple of days, he doesn't understand why Martial isn't appreciated in France, "is it because of his low profile?" he asked. Martial isn't a player who gives interviews like that, people have been on his back since the big money move. The advisors said that he told the hierarchy of the club that him and Martial weren't very happy with number change at the time.

He spent all season out wide and was great? Probably is just playing shite, you don't have to change a players position every time that happens.

Honestly I believe he looked better as a striker than a winger.

When you think about it, if the club really took the number 9 off him without discussing it with him and gave it to Zlatan, that's a seriously pathetic thing to do. Come on, how much does Zlatan wearing the number 9 really benefit the club? How much of a difference does it make? Even if they did discuss it with him, why would you actively want to do that as a club? It's not like the number 9 was free, nor was it used by some no-name squad or youth player. You can go on all you want about "footballers these days, etc.." but the club actually went out of their way to upset our biggest young talent and one of our only players with world-class potential.

 Fecking hell, right now this club is special and not in a good way.

Zlatan with a #9 in shirt sales is much much much higher than Martial with that shirt. They did it for 2 reasons. Shirt sales -> money, and to put Zlatan at ease that he is our #1 choice as a striker. Not that he needed to be put at ease, but just as a welcoming gift

Wouldn't giving him the 7 have similar effect and wouldn't have pissed off one of our better players last season at the same time?

Think this is the issue. Tactics aren't suiting the players.

Zlatan wore the no 11 shirt throughout his AC Milan period. Is the no 9 more marketable? I doubt it. Strange move by the club, it's no excuse for Martial to not perform though. The no 11 is a more iconic number in the context of United anyways, should be an honor.

People will say it's just a number and he should get over it, but it's principle behind it. It was seriously disrespectful to Martial to have his no9 taken away from him for a guy who's only here for a year or 2.

Someone said it in a podcast I think - He is similar to Benzema in the sense that when things are going well, his personality makes him look unfazed. But when shit hits the fan, that same personality then looks like he doesnt care enough.

Not saying the shirt change number debacle is the reason he is playing shite in of itself, but that coming on the back of an international tournament where he barely got minutes, followed by his divorce or whatever to come back to his club who he loves selling him out and switching his number for some mercenary 35 year old after he has just produced a superb debut season amongst all the shite around him is pretty disgraceful on our part.

Maybe Memphis #7 was a much bigger seller than Martial #9 or something daft like that.

Outperformed by Rooney. He needs to take this as motivation and kick start his season.
