Did you see the same games? Because scoring doesn't mean you are playing well. Martial wasn't good against Fenerbahce, and neither against Stoke. Lost the ball multiple times, did some bad runs, so I would say he was merely OK-ish. Definitely not the Martial from last year

He was quite up and down last year as well, just as 99% of the 19year old footballers.

And when you are the risky player in your team, you'll fail a lot. When you play 30 min, lose the ball e.g. 5-10 times but create a goal out of nothing - you play a good game. That is a perfectly acceptable conversion rate.

He was muck whenever he got on the pitch at the Euros too. In the second game against Albania when he started, he stood out as being the worst player on the pitch.

Let's be honest here - he had an excellent start to his United career, he genuinely looked like a young prodigy in his first few games but he's leveled out since then and has ranged between average and quite good.

Hope he can kick on this season but I have lower expectations of him than many on here.

I posted this on August 4th.

Unfortunately it looks like I've been proven correct yet again.

We definitely miss him, even while he was in poor form at start of the season it's still better than anything else we have on the left. He is always a big danger from there, people easily underrate how important he can be. Rashford can replace Ibra up top if his drought continues.

what a rubbish first 3 months of the season he's had, patchy form and missing games here and there with random niggles.

Hope he gets back to norm asap, as Rashford and Lingard out wide are not good options

Posters quoting their own posts are funny.

Noone cared much then and noone cares much now. No need to desperately seek attention.

Ridiculous isn't it. Especially when the post remains a steaming load of shite.

Martial apparently 'levelled out' to an 'average to quite good' player last season.

Never mind basically singlehandedly dragging us to an FA Cup win.

He was well on the way to becoming my favourite Man Utd player. So frustrating when the PA reads out the starting 11 and the subs, and Martial is nowhere to be seen.

Hope he is back soon and starting every game. Young, fast, skilful and clinical in front of goal. He epitomises Man Utd and the way we should play. Absolutely love his chant too.

We need this guy fit and firing if we are to win anything this season.

He's not focus on his football.

Last year all was new to him and he never had criticism during his career.

He left his GF and now he's alone in Manchester, not speaking well and having faced a tough Euro, while his new GF (what a b****) is having fun in Paris.

He's too distracted. His injuries are not coming from nowhere.

Yes, he didn't had a proper pre season, but he was not good for the very first game of the season until that Watford display.

I've a lot of doubt with him, whether he'll be a great player or only a great talent.

He may push for a transfer in PSG sooner than expected.

But to be honest, this year's Martial is not someone that we should cry for if he goes.

We're having issues this season, mainly because our front four is not fast, creative and strong enough...
One of the more speculative, nonsensical and borderline offensive posts I've read in a while.

Ah yes. Another great assertion by Smoking Owl. Up there with his "I told you Fosu-Mensah wouldn't start at right back" post which had us all worshipping such knowledge.

You're right obviously. He's done. Martial isn't good enough. Why didn't we trust you???

Genuine question, but are you saying you don't believe off the field events are related to performance on the field? Asking as it seems the post you quoted has been deleted.

I think it's very naive to assume his off the field drama hasn't affected his performances, and as such, I would've thought them relevant to discuss in here.

This isn't a psychology forum. Its a forum to discuss how Martial played in his last game or last few games. That's all.

I hope to God he goes back upfront.

He has the potential to be one of the very best forwards in Europe. Get Mkhi in and Mata behind Martial and we'd have movement and energy.

Who is this Smoking_Owl guy ? I don't even want to engage in his absurd and ill-informed evaluation of Martial but I genuinely haven't noticed that pal before his dissertation in this thread.

Yep. Then we just need somebody to go out on the left wing consistently (honestly, wouldn't mind Pogba in big games, with Herrera, Carrick and Mata in the midfield 3, since Pogba's got the delivery, physicality and great dribbling to do well out there and in the middle he has struggled to find space in those games), and I feel like it'd be a brilliant front 6.

But Martial simply has to play. He's the best u21 player in the world IMO, or at least level with Dembele and Coman as the best for me. So much potential and talent and carried us for large parts of last season. We were basically a one man attack for most of it.

I mentioned in the we need a centre forward thread that Jose doesn't speak about Martial in the same way as he does about Rashford. Zlatan was a 'gift' to Rashford and said he would help his development, but he didn't mention Martial. It was always clear it was Zlatan and then Rashford this season for the CF position, which makes me think he views Martial as a LW/LF option, especially with the number change fiasco.

Many are unsure of his best position, and I also fall under that category. However, when he played up front he was great at times, but I always felt he drifted wide a lot, which wasn't necessarily a bad thing, but when he shifted to LW he was pretty much our driving force and taking the game to the opposition, for example when he scored 2 against West Ham but went on to lose 3-2, he was phenomenal! He carried us as many have mentioned, and I do feel he's probably better suited to a wide forward position, and those types of players are incredibly hard to obtain or even find at times. I checked his stats on transfermarkt (apologies if they are incorrect) but he played around 56 games and played 27 as a CF whilst 25 of those were as a LW, and 4 as a RW. He scored 5 and assisted 4 as a CF, but scored 11 and assisted 8 as a LW, and finally he scored 2 as a RW.

I hope we can get him back and firing! He will be such an important player for us this season and many more to come!

Smart kid our Anthony.

At their best, Martial > Coman and Dembele. The things he did last season, for a guy his age, was 06-08 Messi-like.

Agree. Think a lot of people forgot what he was like at times last season too. Hell, I did, but I still remembered how insane he was at times. Just watch bits of this video, and think if we add that to our team, then we'll be great going forward.

The longer he stays away from the Deschamps the better. He isn't even fancied by the guy anyways.

Better stay here work on his form and end up the season in a position where Deschamps won't feel the need to keep hauling him off every time(however rare it happens) he plays.

Being dropped from the France squad will do him so good.

It's going to be his toughest season I feel, for off the pitch reasons. I have faith he'll pull through it. Crazily talented this lad.

Wow, thats a bit harsh.
It's not really insult, more a suggestion that France have some great attacking options right now.

Unfortunately for Martial Payet has his LW slot locked down, Striker between Griezmann/Giroud and then Coman, Dembele also on the wings. Deschamps also loves Sissoko.

Just a tricky squad that you need to be in form for.
