So Martial must be training poorly because Mourinho can't possibly be making a mistake.
I'd say that's mightily harsh on the player.
Given his blowing hot and cold all year, I'd say that's a distinct possibility.

He's been in good form since December
"All Mourinho this, what a player he's molded Martial into by his hydrastealth kasparov-ly "your move bro" mind games.
See fanboys? mourinho knows what he is doing, he's taught mkhi how to play football and now he has another disciple who's learnt well from his time out of the team. It's not like he's ever played like this in his life again in the premiership.
Please nobody come up with the above crap. Mourinho was a bellend for dropping him and playing inferior talents. Case closed. Let him play his Masterful fecking chess on yahoogames.com
He had 2 goals in 13 prem games coming into today.
He had 2 goals in 13 prem games coming into today.
The bullshit will continue despite the facts presented and what is obvious to anyone with a pair of working eyes.Your point? He's hardly been played in the league since December
He had 2 goals in 13 prem games coming into today.
For a reason.Your point? He's hardly been played in the league since December
He had 2 goals in 13 prem games coming into today.
Who cares ? The point is he is contributing in attack and creating real chances for others.
Goals are hardly the sole or even main measuring stick for a good performance. He's done well since December and was very good tonight.
I don't get this. In the Zlatan thread you've downplayed the importance of goals. When somebody talks about him missing chances you reply with:
That's regarding our centre forward. Yet here we are discussing the left winger and you use goals scored as the indicator of his form.
Double standards I'm afraid.
For a reason.
MOURINHO EXPLAINS MARTIAL SELECTION
Jose Mourinho has revealed Anthony Martial's determination behind the scenes in training earned him the right to start in Manchester United's 2-0 win over Watford.
The France international set up Juan Mata's opener before going solo to score the second-half clincher as the Reds picked up three points at Old Trafford.
Martial gave former Reds defender Craig Cathcart a torrid time with his pace and direct approach and his selection rubbished media reports that the Frenchman was out of favour with the United manager.
"I'm happy with Anthony's last two weeks of work," said the boss to MUTV. "The way he faced the work, hard work, with more concentration and more determination.
"That's why I gave him this gift, to start this game. Normally, after Leicester, I'd start with the same players and keep Marcus [Rashford] in the team. I just felt Marcus doesn't need a boost because he's playing all the time. Anthony was maybe feeling a little bit down and needed a gift. He answered in the best way."
Martial's performance ensured he was the comfortable winner of United's Man-of-the-Match award as he collected 72 per cent of the votes on Twitter, ahead of other nominees Juan Mata and Henrikh Mkhitaryan.
In the post-match press conference, Mourinho elaborated on the situation regarding the popular Frenchman. "The Anthony Martial I want is the Martial of the last two weeks of training. If he trains the way he did in the past two weeks, he performs naturally the way he did today - or better."
"I think he is still missing a bit of his confidence. I kept shouting at him to attack the defender and go to the one-on-one as he needs that confidence but he's working very well. Anthony needs to feel that I am looking at him and that I know what he did in training and the effort he put in. So I gave him his chance and he played well. He had a good game for me."
Pretty much confirms what I said.
You have to ask Mourinho that, obviously something's been going on behind the scenes. Maybe attitude, workrate. We can only speculate.Explain the reason. He's been scoring and assisting during that time. We've been struggling to score
Pretty much confirms what I said.
Yes. It also shows that he was weakening the team to prove a point.
What about all your comments about it being down to the players poor performances in the games?
Your main point was that he wasn't scoring enough goals in PL games.
Obviously he wasn't working hard enough or been better than others in training to warrant a place, how is that weakening the team.Yes. It also shows that he was weakening the team to prove a point.
What about all your comments about it being down to the players poor performances in the games?
I've always been a huge fan. I just don't dive off the deep end in either direction. If he plays well then great. If he isn't then its not the end of the world either, and there's certainly no need to criticize the manager. Players gain, lose, and re-gain form all the time.
I think Jose has realised that Tony needs a different approach - more encouragement and love over tough love. Though one could say that the tough love produced more effort in training. Its like he is playing both bad cop and good cop with him.
Well you've decided he deserves to be dropped because of how he trains. I'd call that diving off the deep end.
The bigger point is let's have some consistency. If not scoring doesn't matter for Zlatan, a centre forward, let's not use Martials goal scoring against him.
Obviously he wasn't working hard enough or been better than others to warrant a place, how is that weakening the team.
Caf- "Nah-uh. Mourinho's a cnut..."In the post-match press conference, Mourinho elaborated on the situation regarding the popular Frenchman. "The Anthony Martial I want is the Martial of the last two weeks of training. If he trains the way he did in the past two weeks, he performs naturally the way he did today - or better.
Nothing extreme about that. No player should be undroppable, including Martial, Rooney, Zlatan, or any of them. Ultimately its a meritocracy and Mourinho has handled this superbly.
He just did what most of us new he would do when given the chance. I honestly believe we would have won that Hull game if Martial was playing on the left. He is so much more dangerous than anyone else we play there.
He played out of his skin, absolute blinder from Mourinho.
He's done well mostly in lower level competitions. He was good in those games but that doesn't mean he would have done as well in the league.Picking players who are not as good and who aren't in as good form as him. Obviously that weakens the team.
Either way he's at least giving some indication as to what it's been about. Hopefully it's the end of it
Surprise surprise, Mourinho confirmed he hasn't been working hard enough in training. What I've been saying all along.
