Maybe if you threw away the narratives and actually watched the player's performance you'd be better placed to judge. There's been a distinct lack of that in this thread recently. Can it supporting the manager if you want but it's pretty harsh on the player himself

I'm not following a set narrative and its a bit of a childish jibe. I watch the games and Martial has been disappointing for the most part, played a couple of good games against some fairly bad sides and people act like hes in great form which he is not and hasn't been for a long time. I'd suggest you watch the game objectively without feeling the need to defend martial.

The only reason he's not absolutely flying right now is because Jose keeps dropping him. He's been good in his last few appearances.

Do you give him credit for Mhkitaryan too? From where I'm standing the best player in last seasons Bundesliga was wasted on the bench for 3 months but apparently he was shite until Jose fixed him

He wasn't good in his last two. So jose dropped him. He was really good in one of the last four, decent in another, and not up to much in two. Not exactly blistering form and not even up to scratch with Mata who isn't a sewn on starter either. Of course he deserves some credit for mkhitaryan, he did play for us early in the season and wasn't great, in fact he was poor in several matches, then when he earned his place in the team he was man of the match 4 games out of 5 and playing with incredible consistency.

He's been poor by his standards for a lot of the season. Crap in fact. I've never argued this. What annoys me is when his form does pick up he's not allowed to maintain it. His last few games have ranged between decent and great. Comfortably better than most of his team mates. Yet we're having a conversation about him not taking his chances. It's a load of rubbish.

There's a lot of rubbish here. I'll pick it up later. Enjoy the match

His confidence looks absolutely shot in the first few minutes of the Wigan game. Well done Jose.

Why should he get a grip. Mourinho's treatment of Martial has been needlessly over the top and probably caused a massive loss of confidence.
Because as much as you can disagree with Mourinho on his use of Martial, he's the manager, and he decides who's playing. How exactly has he put unnessecary pressure on Martial? As far as I'm concerned, going by your logic, he treated Mkhitaryan even worse. And you didn't see him/his agent moaning to the press at every given opportunity. And see how he's doing now.

And for the record, I'd like to see Martial getting more playing time, but all this talk about Mourinho pressuring and handling him awfully is just utter bullshit.

Wouldn't be the first talented young player Jose has fecked out of a club anyway

WTH are you talking about? He's is playing today. Jose let go of KDB while at Chelsea, Jose won the title regardless. We will win the title eventually with or without Martial. It's upto him to decide if he wants to be a part of it or not. SAF has kicked out plenty of players in their prime.

Can't really judge him when our midfield can't produce one proper forward pass.

Yes he did treat Mkhitaryan even worse and that was also wrong and there plenty of stories about Mhiki in the press at the time. Who knows where we would have been if Mhiki was playing from earlier in the season but no, Jose gets all the credit for him playing well after dropping him when he may well have been good enough anyway. The same will happen with Martial, if he plays badly it will be Martial's fault and if he plays well it will be classed as a master stroke by Mourinho which is a complete joke.

He has put unnecessary pressure on Martial by repeatedly dropping him from the squad when he hasn't even played badly. Other play far worse and keep their place.

Exactly. It's as if Jose has deliberately fecked things up for him, fielding that midfield.
Of course he has. In fact, I think Mourinho took this job so he could ruin Martial's career.

I don't know about purposely, but Jose probably took the opponent too lightly.

Seriously? Mata and Mkhitaryan offer plenty of creative support. He's playing up front against Wigan, at home. If he can't produce today it's nobody's fault but his own.

Stop making excuses for poor performances. Martial's been awful every time he's touched the ball. That's his own fault.

Mata has been poor and Mkhitaryan hasn't offered much more. Again, the problem in our play lies within the selection of our midfield.

We are having problems getting the ball to our attacking midfielders today, let alone Martial, Mata and Mkhi have done nothing so far.

I don't get playing him up front against a team that are just sitting back. It's almost like the stubborn one is trying to prove a point.

State of this thread. Yes Jose hasn't helped him but it's hardly like he's been sent out with the reserves. He should be neater and tidier in possession when he does get it.

Desperate for him to have a good game though.

How do you expect Martial's confidence to be after being dropped from the squad for 2 games when he hadn't even had a bad game before hand. As well as being called out by Mourinho publicly. Once your confidence goes, your touch goes and you struggle. It's a delicate balance.

I thought he was getting better as the half progressed. Dropped back in support and was positive and precise in his passing. Also made a couple of good runs but was overlooked.

Yeah, Mourinho has done this just to oust Martial, makes complete sense now.

His link up play just isn't good enough right now to lead the line. There's nothing wrong with him being an inside forward for us. That's where he should be playing.

Martial can't play with his back to goal. Please to God never play him at striker again.

The overanalysis is too much. He looked better as the team improved through the half. Like every single player in red. This kid is 21 ffs.

Well he hadn't led the line for months. Since the 35th minute or so he's looked much better

I totally agree but just saying everyone in the thread from both camps needs to calm down. I don't like how Jose has handled him either but he needs to put in performances in situations like this to ensure he basically shuts the manager up.
