Angel Di Maria

This lad looks to me to be the next Arjen Robben minus the injury proneness.

Not Ronaldo or Messi, but a fecking terrific winger.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves now, you did think Walcott would be one of the very best players in the world too.

Di Maria's got a long way to go yet.

not really mate, we've been unlucky with Teves and Heinse

look at other argies that played for ages in their teams giving their best

like batistuta for fiorentina or sanetti for inter or redondo for real madrid

I think my point is that in the end most argentines want to feck off to either a) the Latin countries or b) where there's most money. Batistuta and zanetti went straight there at a time when serie a was the worlds best and richest league.

Er, if Marcos generalized from the two most annoying English people on RedCafe to all English people, I'd think of him as xenophobic (and probably more than a little bit stupid, to be honest). Thankfully, that is not the case.

What people forget is that while Heinze and Tevez both left the club in somewhat acrimonious circumstances, during their time at the club they were two of the most committed players that we have ever seen — from any country.

If anything, I'd point to the fact that some South American players leave their homeland at a very early age and are perhaps, due to the circumstances, too trusting of their agents who have, to be fair, helped them to succeed in Europe. But even the best agents can't completely escape the psychological pressure of knowing that they are most successful when their players move clubs at least two or three times during their career.

And let's be honest, would we all be strong minded enough to know exactly what was right for us and to resist all attempts to get us to move on? I'm not convinced by that, at all.

If anything, there needs to be reform of the way in which agents are allowed to operate and to the current reward structure that means that it is more beneficial to move a player on at regular intervals, even if it it is detrimental to their career, than it is for that player to remain at one club.

Expecting what are often not that well educated twenty-somethings to always know what is right for their career is simply not realistic, but nor is expecting a high percentage of agents to resist the psychological pull of the current reward structure and to always act with the best interests of their clients.

I'll judge the next Argentinian player on his own merits, just as I do with all people.

Seriously this lad is exactly what were looking for on the left wing, the thing that has got me about him is his footballing brain (he may be thick as pigshit in real life) and quick reactions. Plus the fact he can take on a player. I like him, I want him. I reckon him and Defour will be our 2 main targets, rather have Hamsik but I reckon he's staying put in Italy.

...Indeed.....

I would bet my car that Angel di Maria will not sign for us.

He will go to a club that will offer him the insane amount of money his agent will demand i.e City or Real.

This is precisely why the transfer forum was created.

:nervous:

In all serious though, I think he has the potential to be better than Robben. That means shit really, because how many players actually live up to their potentia

Potential is all very subjective. Robben has blown hot and cold over his career, mainly due to the injuries. But that can't be ignored can it. From what i've seen of Di Maria, he looks like the next big Argie player. Certainly not a Messi, but potentially as good as Tevez.

+ a weak mental attitude and extreme selfishness.

and an uncanny resemblance to Jean-Luc Picard.

The thing is, Nani went for 18m even though he was unproven, Angel Di Maria is an Argie regular and has been one of the most consistent players for them. Think the 25m price tag is unavoidable unless Benfica are going bankrupt.

Nani had played for the Portuguese national team too, 6 games in the champions league (same as Di maria) and was younger with more potential already noted by some as "The new Ronaldo" and we paid the buyout fee in his contract to head off interest from other clubs. If we had negotiated his fee we would very likely have paid less, same with Anderson.

Really Di Maria has only done a bit more in portugal than Nani did (not in the league though, in the europa league) and a bit more for his national side, but you have to expect that given he's a year older than Nani was when we signed him. In his first season Nani did well at United and proved more than Di Maria has so far so compared at the same age...

The Spanish clubs will most likely be after Silva and Mata and Valencia need 30 million euros this summer, so one of them could very well be sold. City on the other hand are sure to be putting in bids left right and center for all the flavour of the month talents and Di Maria is likely to be one of them. If they get a champions league spot and offer him the most money, dont rule it out him linking up with Tevez and Zabaleta at City.

Other than Mata and then Di Maria, there is a bit of a lack of genuine quality left footed left wingers at the moment. Partly because its become fashionable to have a left winger playing on the right ala Messi. That lack of quantity could affect the price. After Di Maria there's er... Capel who had a terrible season last season and is usually unable to hold down a starting place at Sevilla. Christian Rodriguez at Porto though I believe Varela has been Porto's best player this season from the left. But he's another right footer. Who else is there?
