Angel Di Maria

Great first half, won both(?) penalties in the second half. Can't have done much more.

Heard a lot of buzz about this player, I've barely seen him play mind, what happens when your domestic football is Portuguese and you're not in the Champions League I guess

Looked handy tonight, certainly one of their best players against Liverpool. Nothing that made me sit up and think 'woah, that's special'. Will obviously learn more during the World Cup

TBF the world cup is a terrible judging ground for us. Remember Kleberson:D

This is the type of player that I put in the same bracket of Quaresma and so many others gifted with amazing skill. He's good, top-quality at Benfica, but would he cut it at Manchester? I'm not sure. Along the great skill and sometimes frantic games that he manages, the average game Di María is a player that wastes loads of attacking opportunities, doesn't pass the ball at the right moment, tries the pretty shot when he could go for the effective one, etc... Even yesterday, he had some very nice moments but he also wasted some attack chances that, at a team like Manchester United, would leave the fans, manager and colleagues insane if you weren't already winning the game by a comfortable margin.

He can very well become world-class but no one can be sure of that from what he displayed so far. For a top-team, he will always be a gamble, and his price should reflect the risk that he won't adapt. A football brain isn't that easy to acquire instantly as so many seem to think. Players like Di María, Hulk and Quaresma are players that are with all probability more meant to be stars at the portuguese or french league than at the spanish or english one.

Di María is at his best form at the moment. I can assure you that 3 months ago, every nice game he had, Benfica fans got ecstatic on their forum because "maybe we can sell him for 30m if he has some more of these performances". You can be sure that if he was THAT good and regular (and if fans regarded him as fundamental to the team's offensive maneuver) no one would want to even think about selling him. When you support a team like Benfica or Porto you want to have the best players playing for you, not selling them (even of over-priced) because none of that money comes to your pocket yet you lose the pleasure of watching them play.

Isn't it always the case with any talented player. I pondered over the same question yesterday and I feel he would require a similar amount of attention on field as Ronaldo had at United. The difference would be the effort the player in question puts in.

Very good post Arruda. I was watching last night and sometimes his weight of pass let him down!

Of course, any player is some sort of a gamble when changing clubs, and more if they are young and come from a less competitive league, that's just what I meant.

Di María is 22, if he is to be world-class he better explode in the next 2 years or he wont make it. He is young when you consider the number of years on top form that he can provide, not THAT young when you want to consider his developing potential. He can become a more mature and reliable player, but I doubt he gets to the top-bracket (20 or 30 best players) ever, and with a €40 million price tag, that should be expected.

He's not smart at all, which doesn't help.

So, would you agree that he's another Nani?

Lots of talent but lots of work to do to improve.

Yes, I said a lot of times in the newbies that I think Di María doesn't add much to Nani. He's a bit like a left-footed version of him. He can be useful of course, but I don't think he has that good of a chance to become that dream winger everyone talks about for sometime.

I think that Quaresma always looked more like a showboater than a footballer and Hulk has been very unimpressive except for his strength when I've seen him. Di Maria looks as if he has qualities that would enable him to be a force in any league. This will piss me off, since we had a deal done until he realised he couldn't get a work permit to play for us.

He is talented no doubt but the inexperience shows, probably why you said him not being a smart player.
Is this price tag of 40 million something in his contract? It would be rather foolish to burden an young talent with such an hefty price tag.

edit: but well. Transfers are not at normal level these days.

This doesn't make much sense. I can't think of one thing in at which he is better than Quaresma (when this one was at Porto). He's not smarter, he's not faster, he's not a better passer, he's not more regular on his exhibitions, he doesn't showboat less, and he's a smaller goal threat than Quaresma was. Only advantage is really being two years younger or so... And I saw almost every game of both of them in Portugal.

40 million is his release clause. Means that if anyone comes with that money there's nothing Benfica can do to stop him leaving. Not very meaningful on the market. Hulk has a 100 million clause for example. This just means the negotiation process always passes by us.

I expect Di María to leave for somewhere along the €30 million range unless some club like Chelsea or City is willing to go insane.

In my opinion (based on limited evidence admittedly) Quaresma was never going to make it at the highest level I think Di Maria probably will. We'll just have to wait and see whose judgment's better over time. If you want another opinion Hulk is at the right level but I think Falcao could play at a higher level.

Regarding Di Maria.

Like I said, 3 or 4 games I've seen him play, 1 of those was for Argentina and he was woeful. For Benfica, he looks like he has pace, brilliant technical ability, willing to take on a man, a decent left foot and a good brain. All good ingredients. I think in the right team he could do well in England, or he could just turn out to be another Reyes. Either way I don't think he'll be a world beater.

Arruda, how much would David Luiz cost and do you rate him?

Considering his age I'm sure he'll never leave for anything less than €20m and possibly around the €25m - €30m values if we consider how much Real payed for Pepe. He still makes dumb things every once in a while, but his aerial game is impressive and his technique, tackling and pace are very good. If he manages to become a serene player soon I think he has it all to be a first choice for Brazil.

I think Di Maria needs another year or two befoe he will become the great player that he looks like he will become. People on here should remember how they slated Ronaldo, Nani and even Rooneys abilities before they became mature enough to start consistently making big impacts in games. Seeing how Nani has finally come of age since Christmas I think next season should be an exciting one for him!

I've been impressed with him each time I've seen him play but I don't have anywhere near the extensive knowledge of him Arruda has, I think part of what has made him stand out is he is really the only natural left winger hot-prospect out there right now.

Really?

Juan Mata was exceptional last season and is on the fringe of the Spain team. He's the usual sub and impresses each time.

Guardado and Ben Arfa are two more hot prospects. Less than there used to be? Probably. But he's in no way the only one. And Mata has probably proven more than him so far.

I've seen a lot of Mata, great talent no doubt but he drifts central a lot and isn't a classic winger in the sense of Di Maria who's main game is getting down the flank and crossing in balls, much like Valencia.

Mata and Ben Arfa both strike me more in the mould of the modern false winger who drift inside as playmakers, where Di Maria is an oldschool winger.

Think about about two winters from now for JROD

Oh my he has a nickname, sign him up SAF

I dont think we need to sign Di Maria and def not for 40mil, if thats the price. Hes good but not that good. Plus we have good wing play we need a good CM or Striker.

You give Benfica 20 and they´ll deliver him at OT in a box made of gold.
