The richest and biggest clubs have and will nearly always pay a premium on players because everyone knows they can afford it and don't want to be told no. The issue is making sure we choose the right players.
Especially when your executive VP goes around telling everyone he's got loads of dosh. :D

I'm trying not to get too excited until I see him holding up the red shirt, but boy, this would be an epic signing.

Granted, we have big problems elsewhere in the squad, but ignoring our defensive deficiencies, we desperately need someone exciting. Someone who can just pick up the ball and make things happen. Di Maria is that man and his signing could spark a huge change in the mood in the squad - he seems the kind of player who will get everyone to lift their game.

Exceptionally talented, and if he guarantees a double-figure goal count each season plus many assists, the fee will prove irrelevant. Can't wait to see him start terrifying defences - something we haven't done in far too long!

El Clasico last season where they lost 3-4, Madrid could have scored four goals in the first half alone, all set up by Di Maria. The ultimate big game player.

This is a 70 million player. Totally worth his fee.

Real spent 80m EUR on James, who apart from the WC had one good season at Monaco. They also spent 100m on Bale, 30m on Isco(to probably bench him) and 32m on Illara(probably same with Isco). It's not only United. Besides, not so long ago our record signing was Berbatov in the 30m pounds mark.
James was good at Porto as well.

£163m spent this year already if we assume £50m up front for Di Maria. People will still go on about how we don't sign players though and how Glazers are restricting us.

Aye.

I won't completely take the blame away from them but I think it's become more and more apparent that the perceived the under spending in the squad was more due to Fergie rather Glazers.

True. Shame we couldn't get Hazard because we wouldn't pay the agent fee if the rumours were true, then again we probably dodged a bullet by not signing Lucas so it evens out.

Fair to say that we probably dodged a bullet by not signing Sneijder aswell.

And Gil too, I think. They worked well as a pair but clearly had a very strict regime in terms of what they would pay for fees/agents etc.

They were essentially still operating in a 2004 market even in 2012.

Wouldn't PSG be a possible risk though?

Surely di Maria knew if he signed for PSG, then there could have been an FFP sanction, which meant no Champions League football anyway. With the way PSG have been blatantly disregarding their FFP rules, it's likely they could receive further punishment if they continue to spend. Plus the French league isn't as competitive as the Premier League, there would be more of a challenge coming to United.

Champions League exclusion is way down the list of potential sanctions. It was aimed at those who believe that our brand has lost its appeal.

He didn't even have a good season at Monaco though from what I've heard. Was inconsistent and started off pretty poorly.
He may have started slowly but that is understandable being a young player in a new league. But he did finish the season with 10 goals and 14 assists.

Fair to say that we probably dodged a bullet by not signing Sneijder aswell.
Big time, another player who wouldn't have fit our formation, cost a bomb and is quite poor at the minute.

Sure £64m is a lot for a player turning 27 this season, but the going rate for potential is £30m these days (see Shaw & Mangala), so a genuine talent is going to be in that bracket. United couldn't really win with this one in terms of spending, damned if they do and damned if they don't. He's a top talent and a great signing for any side, you just have to hope it's not a case of blowing the whole budget on Di Maria when your squad is in need of investment elsewhere, quickly. Out of interest how will this shape your best 11? Can you see Mata, Di Maria, Rooney and RVP all in the same side?

That we are overpaying is indisputable. The truth is we have put ourselves in a position where we are always going to be vulnerable to exorbitant demands from selling clubs. The window shuts in a week, we've taken 1 point from our opening 2 games, and the current squad is arguably weaker than the one which finished the season 7th; it's hard to escape the air of desperation around the place. That being said, Di Maria is a top class player, it's not my money, and if it isn't spent on players like him, it sits in the bank or gets ploughed into less beneficial enterprises. I agree that they're damned either way.

Where does he fit in? Well assuming everyone is available (pretty big assumption), the only way I could see Rooney, Mata, Rvp, & Di Maria fitting into the same lineup, without any of the former three having to play wide, is a 4-2-2-2 system (similar to the one you use at City), or a 4-3-1-2 (or 4-4-2 diamond). However, my personal view is that "Mata + 1" is the solution to the Mata/RvP/Rooney problem, primarily because of issues around pace in the side. My guess is Van Gaal will revert to a 4-3-3 if/when this signing comes off.

Big time, another player who wouldn't have fit our formation, cost a bomb and is quite poor at the minute.
At that time he was one of the best in the world and would have played behind Rooney in the #10 position. Wouldnt have been a terrible signing.

Congrats to United if true. A world class player and big match guy. Love his all around game.
Reminds me of Robben to Bayern when Louis had a bad start. Not shy to correct his wrong view on teams.
Respect.

Not quite. There is a difference between our financial situation now and then. Interest payments have come down quite a bit and the commercial deals took some time to explore, sign and kick in. Fergie may have held off on spending big in last couple of seasons since he may have wanted the new manager to buy for his own team but for large parts of Glazer reign, there is no way that such cash was available.

Infact this outlay is only being provided since Glazers know that they can not afford to stay out of CL. I am sure if we had actually made 4th, we would not have spent so much to win the league.

A great signing, WHEN official. He is exactly what we need in the attacking third, the wide position is just has badly needed as defence and midfield, one hell of an engine on him. If we pull off blind and de jong, we could see huge improvements in the team. And I do hope if all 3 of de jong blind and di maria sees a formation change, and uses 4231/433

Now what could be available if all 3 are signed
DDG
smalling jones blackett blind
herrera de jong
di maria mata rooney/janazaj
RVP

A much more balanced team, and that team would have a much better shape seeing us attack sides knowing we have more pace, and a structure in the way we attack teams

Blackett in the starting XI ahead of Evans, Jones and Rojo? No Shaw?

We are finally going to have a top class player who can actually run with the ball. Praise the fecking lord.

Outstanding player. Ridiculous fee IMO.

PSG offered 48m. Di Maria wants out. So why have we jumped to 63.9 when usually when a player demands to go the buying club gets the advantage of negotiating on their terms.
What does PSG's offer have to do with anything if it was rejected?

I said at the moment, has allot of them are injured, and I would expect herrera back very soon. The way blackett is playing, I would have him over evans and rojo
