That's slightly misleading stat though good to gauge a general idea. Leighton Baines was the highest the season before with 97 just in the league. It gets boosted if you are delivering free kicks especially -

Di Maria performed well in the CL final and 2nd half of last season no disputing that but Mata has been excellent as well before as i said above. Different skill set but they are similar level of players. (We definitely need Di Maria's skillset more if i had to choose one.)
My post was a response to someone claiming Mata had better end product. I could've quite easily thrown his almost 100 assists into the argument aswell. It's opinions at the end of the day though...

Sure £64m is a lot for a player turning 27 this season, but the going rate for potential is £30m these days (see Shaw & Mangala), so a genuine talent is going to be in that bracket. United couldn't really win with this one in terms of spending, damned if they do and damned if they don't. He's a top talent and a great signing for any side, you just have to hope it's not a case of blowing the whole budget on Di Maria when your squad is in need of investment elsewhere, quickly. Out of interest how will this shape your best 11? Can you see Mata, Di Maria, Rooney and RVP all in the same side?

For love of god, lets scrap this 3-5-2 now. I will die inside if I see him played at wing back.

Yeah, agreed.

I think a lot of fans would be happy if we played a 4-3-3 (LvG specifically mentioned AdM when he said we're lacking wingers to play a 4-3-3) and either dropped 1 of Rooney/RvP or shifted Rooney slightly wide(r).

At least his class and versatility is going to give us options.

With a proper midfield behind them it should work well enough, you've managed something similar for a while with with Aguero, Tevez/Dzeko, Silva and Nasri/Navas. We obviously need a proper midfield first though.

I doubt we'd see it much, though. Personally I'd sooner drop Van Persie because he offers absolutely nothing at the moment. Long term I'd imagine we'd get another winger for the other side and use Welbeck and Januzaj as wide options in a 433.

On the budget side I doubt we'd spend so much on him if there was a strict budget. We'll surely sign at least one midfielder before the deadline.

We pay £48m upfront. The other £15m is add ons, £10m of which they are not going to see anytime soon. That is a pretty good deal for a player of Di Maria's quality.

Is that actually the deal? I thought it was £63million up front, with £15 add ons?

I'm getting mixed up, because I thought you were right initially but then people on here seem to say it's the one I brought up.

Totally confused.

£63 after add-ons is very good imo. That would put his base value at around £50mil and I think I read about 5 mil of the add-ons is for us winning the league (not sure by when) but that seems unlikely

Anyone have that instagram image Rojo liked that showed him, Di Maria, Vidal and Blind with a checkmark next to his picture?

Looks like two down, two to go  (yes I have gone full muppet, this IS the last week of the transfer window and the Di Maria buy has buoyed me.)

I wonder, IF those rumors about final hitches and Real trying to raise the price at the last moment is true, could it be because they saw yesterday's match and thought: "feck that, the add-ons conditions should be changed"...

Are any of you seriously caring whether or not the fee is £60 million or £70 million?

It's a ridiculous fee anyway, which was always to be expected after Woodward's bragging about our well-filled coffers.

Now, let's all just enjoy the fact that we've signed a genuine world class performer at his peak. That's a rare commodity at United.

And let's also all just pretend our CM's working.

We arguably did that with Mata, and that hasn't worked out well at the moment.

His arrival and the almost certainty of another midfielder will signal the end of 352. One of mata rvp or roo may have to give way a regular starting place but it will be worth it for overall balance of squad. We knew this would be a problem when we got mata.

Raf..jones..rojo..shaw
...herera..new cm.........
............mata................
Jan.....................di maria
............rooney..............

I expect to be most likely. If that new cm is of vidal quality(prob wont be, most likely de jong or blind) I can't see how we cannot get 4th place. Just need a bit of confidence.

When lvg has used 433 before does anybody know how he prefers to set up his midfield three? I assume it's two cms with a mata type person at top of three or is it usually a dm style with two cm's ahead ala:

.............carrick...............
...herera........new cm....

He's done both....but his philosophy tends to be an 8 & 10 ahead of a 6 (total LVG speak!). Have a read:

Would you bastards ever should up about the transfer fee?

Christ.
Regardless of how little it effects you or I, it will still impact the club. If we had an endless flow of cash with owners who didn't give a shit about spending it then fair enough but thats not the case.

We spent 27mil on Fellaini (10-15mil over priced)
We spent ~37mil on Mata (If we weren't so desperate, coulda saved 5-10mil)
We spent ~27mil on Shaw (5mil over priced)
If rumours are true, we are about to spend £63mil on Di Maria, a player who clearly wants to leave the club. Still worth the money but again about £10mil over priced.

Everybody knows we are desperate to make big signings and that is clearly having a huge impact on the people at United negotiating these fees. From 4 transfers you are looking at between £30-40mil extra which could be spent on Carvalho/Vidal(+Hernandez) etc etc.

We don't have an endless flow of cash and while I don't care if we over spend here and there; all of our transfers have seemed steep and that will eventually mean we can't buy as many players.

If we don't sign anyone else, I'd like to see him in CM like this...

DDG
Smalling Jones Evans
Rafael____Rojo____Shaw
Herrera (Carrick)_Di Maria (Mata)
RVP(Welbeck)_Rooney(Hernandez)

OR

DDG
Smalling Rojo Jones
Rafael Herrera Di Maria Shaw
Januzaj RVP Mata

Good thing we didn't spend £80m on Ronaldo (a player who clearly wanted to leave too) else people would be pulling their hair out.

Who cares? We can afford that, we don't need to worry about FFP and after saving money for years we have finally begun to spend. Do you think Real Madrid are bothered by the fact they spent £80m on Ronaldo and £84m on Bale? Or that Barcelona worry all the time that Neymar cost them £64m and Suarez cost £65m?

Ah excellent. So why the feck are people making such a massive deal about the fee? Jesus. That's going to be annoying. £48m is a steal for Di Maria. And if we do end up paying the full £63million, then all that means is that we're winning the PL and CL again.

Sounds like a cracking deal.

Just a couple of points:

1. Rojo will be the left sided of the 3 centre backs.
2. If we continue with the 3 at the back (which I don't think we will), expect to see Carrick play in the middle of them.
3. Scrap points 1 & 2, it will most be likely be 4-3-3 come the end of the transfer window.

About time the biggest club in England held the British transfer record again!!

It's a lot of money but my god don't we desperately need players of his quality to bolster not the only the squad but our starting 11. The lack of quality wingers we have as well is worrying.

As long as he is a success people will soon forget the price. Ask Madrid fans if they regret spending £160 million on Bale and Ronaldo. Of course if he flops (Kaka) then it becomes an expensive problem.

Outstanding player. Ridiculous fee IMO.

PSG offered 48m. Di Maria wants out. So why have we jumped to 63.9 when usually when a player demands to go the buying club gets the advantage of negotiating on their terms.

63m including add-ons is fine by me. If we only had a midfielder on the same level as him.

ADM could solve a lot of our problems - and that is creating chances. He brings pace, creativity and technical finesse into our game, something we badly lack despite having Rooney, RVP, Mata etc

Oh. I should have just quoted this post.

PSG offered that (according to you) and were rejected, weren't they? Also, there's a difference between a player wanting out and a player wanting to go to the buying club. I'm not sure Di Maria was very eager to join us, to be honest. I could be wrong of course.

I doubt Madrid give two fecks about Kaka either. They moved him on and replaced him with yet another £33m player then followed by a £23m player. To sweeten things up they put a £55m player in front of them.
