I'd put Mata in the same bracket as Di Maria....both below a 09-13 RVP.....I don't think RVP will reach them heights again, but he's still class clearly. He should age well unless body breaks down completely.

Don't get me wrong, I think Mata is a talented player - it just remains to be seen what he can really do for us and if he can replicate his quality at Chelsea.
He was excellent at the end of last season, 6 goals in 6 wasn't it? When he started for us Moyes had him out wide.

Don't know if it was just me but RvP looked really slow at the WC.

Never been overly fast. He's just an intelligent player, that's why I think he'll age well, having pace around him will help and that starts with Di Maria.

Bullshit. He wasn't earning as much as he would have liked and signing a five contract now, he would have liked to have a big paycheck since he will be 31 by the time the new contract runs out. And what about signing three players who are capable of playing in his position? Those are just Perez's words.

What did van persie do in 09 and 10 that was better than di maria?

It was similar last year with the Ozil character assasinations.

He was just about their best player last season, and if they offered him a contract to match his contribution, there's probably zero chance he would have left.

Hopefully Giggs will get robin to take up yoga. Could get a fair few years out of him yet

Worth a repost I think.

Modric was as important as di maria was over the course of the season and in the big games last year (modric was better vs munich). Alonso was part of the engine too albeit less influential than di maria and modric.

Gaz is right. We have three problems currently - Wing, CM and CB. We have solved one of the problems with the Wing. We have started to solve the problems in CM and CB with Herrera and Rojo but they aren't done. We need two more pieces of the puzzle. We definitely need a CM before next week. CB I think we can manage with Evans, Jones, Smalling, Blackett and Rojo. But in CM we are desperate for another signing.

Nev is right we need all 3, having a winger with pace and the ability to beat a player completely changes the dimension of our side and how teams can set up vs us.

Yes you are right ... Well spotted!

Actually your observation makes an stronger point, before Atkinson signed Robson for a UK record fee of £1.5m, we also bought Gary Birtles in I think 1980 for a then record of £800k. So breaking transfer records and setting new scary financial parameters has been a cultural habit of ours since many many years and only thwarted by the emergence of petro cash.

Haha, thank you for not also being pedantic and commenting I put RoNson and not Robson.

But you're right, United have always had a habit of breaking the transfer record. Fergie did regularly break the transfer record and the amount of times he was linked with players that could have broken it further, but never seemed to get the deals done. Batistuta, Ronaldinho, Torres and Silva, Hazzard etc. Yet he continually spent £15-£30 on players like Veron, Carrick, Berbatov, Anderson, Nani, Young, Zaha, Jones etc. He and Wenger seemed quite similar in that respect, except Fergie would be prepared to break the bank for the Rio's and Rooneys of this world. He just never seemed to be able to get that REALLY big named world class overseas star (from outside the PL) deals over the line, Veron was an exception. He, like Wenger was far better at making the stars than buying them.

Blind would be great....he can play two positions in 3-4-2-1 and 4-2-3-1

With a player like (and Rojo)...we can easily change our formations during a match

Why has the fact that we need a quality winger as much as anything slipped under so many peoples noses? Valencia, Young and Nani have been absolute muck for seasons now. Shocking stats to boot.

I don't know about both Blind and De Jong. They are just average players in my opinion. We have enough of those already.

Is it too early to start thinking chants? :D

To the tune of Blondie:

He moves like he don't care
Smooth as Giggs, cool as McClair
Ooh he'll make the Scousers cry

He doesn't know your name
And like Van Gaal plays with his brain
Ooh he makes you wanna die

Ooh, don't you wanna take him? (na-na-na)
Ooh, wanna make him all your own? (na-na-na)

Di Maria, you've gotta see him!
Comes in off the wing, scores a goal!
From Argentina, he's Di Maria!
No te deja, no te deja de alentar!

...the whole thing might be a bit too long, but just the chorus has a lovely ring to it.

 The tune is good. Just make it more catchier, a slight altered original lyric:
" diMaria...
You've gotta see him!
Go insane. and. out of your mind..."

United has enough quality on the squad now so losing should not be an option. Team selection, subs etc will now be the deciding factor.

That Ancelotti, the players and the majority of the fans wanted him to stay should be proof enough that he wasn't a Madrid reject.

Yet some muppets are trying their best to make it look like he's the one leaving instead of not being fully appreciated by the board, hence the signing of James.

It just seems strange to me how eager some people are to say that he chose United over Madrid. Whatever floats your muppet boats I guess.

Yes we acknowledge the fact that Di Maria will have stayed at Real had they shown him that he was valued at the club. As of now Real are the more attractive proposition to most players right now. I don't think anyone is doubting that. Maybe some are just posting tongue-in-cheek comments to rile you up, my point was that there were more things in play at Di Maria choosing to leave United than Real signing James alone.

Lets wait and see what Di Maria says though, we might get more insight sooner rather than later about this matter. Maybe Perez could release a statement soon enough claiming Di Maria is a mercenary who rejected their offers from the start of the summer. We would more likely be seeing him claiming Di Maria is of a poor character like Ozil or maybe a Barca-like statement for Fabregas on Real's website about Di Maria's lack of consistency ;)

What is split into sets of 5m Euros? So we some fees up front and the rest, presumably 30-35m in 5 to 6 years?
