Had a quick look at rawk, predictable really they think he's worth 30 Mil and that we're crazy for bidding for him.

When we buy players like Rojo, Rawk say we can't attract or afford top class players, when we buy top class players like DiMaria and Mata, Rawk say we are desperate and they are panic buys.
Rival fans are so annoying lol.

Worth a repost I think.

Extremely optimistic, Pepe being gold.

Yep, weird that people blame his leg break that time. But when he came back he was back to his awesome self, it was like it never happened. It was like he just lost all of his attacking confidence.

He was so explosive the season following that horror injury. Even better than before. No idea what happened to him during that #7 season. Did the expectation of the shirt crush him? It did seem odd he reverted back to 25. He was my favourite player prior to him taking the 7, and then he looked like a different player once he starting wearing it. So disappointing.

What changed is that he was identified as a threat and the opposition double up on him when it's on the right hand side of the field. We've had nobody to switch the play either so it was easy for them to do that and get away with it.

As he's purely a kick and rush player and needs an acre to run into, his entire skill set was nullified.

With the money Real Madrid throw around, I'm sure most Madrid fans would have much preferred to keep him than get even the unlikely and optimistic £80m that some places are touting.

In that tweet Marcelo also tells Di Maria that he loves him. Aww...

Is it too early to start thinking chants? :D

To the tune of Blondie:

He moves like he don't care
Smooth as Giggs, cool as McClair
Ooh he'll make the Scousers cry

He doesn't know your name
And like Van Gaal plays with his brain
Ooh he makes you wanna die

Ooh, don't you wanna take him? (na-na-na)
Ooh, wanna make him all your own? (na-na-na)

Di Maria, you've gotta see him!
Comes in off the wing, scores a goal!
From Argentina, he's Di Maria!
No te deja, no te deja de alentar!

...the whole thing might be a bit too long, but just the chorus has a lovely ring to it.

"@marcoslopez: Di María ya es jugador del @ManUtd Los diablos rojos pagarán 75 millones de euros de traspaso + 15 en bonus. 10 de ellos muy fáciles."

"marcoslopez: Di Maria is already playerManUtd The Red Devils will pay 75 million euros transfer bonus + 15 in 10 of them very easy.."

That makes me want to cry.

Apart from RvP and Mata only within the last two years, yeah we don't.

Mata and RVP are world class, without question. This one feels a little surreal because Madrid are the Champions of Europe, and probably a bigger club than we are, especially so in terms of throwing around financial weight, and attracting the worlds best players. I can't remember the last time we signed a player who was taking a 'step down' to join us, as there are so few step ups from United anyway. Ancelotti wanted to keep Di Maria, and we seem close to taking him. I can't remember a transfer like this happening in this manner.

Some news outlets are reporting that the player has agreed terms, but negotiations between the clubs are scheduled for Monday. Surely the deal must already be done in principle already though? It's not as if Ed will fly to Madrid to start haggling tommorow when Ancellotti claims the player has already said goodbye to the team. Everything must already have been agreed, right? RIGHT?

Please never do this again.

Of course, relax for just tonight and allow panic to set in once again after the Sunderland game ;)

That is very true. I know what you mean by "step down" even though it isn't in some ways but is in others.

It was on and off for the past couple of weeks especially with PSG dropping out and the way Madrid were treating him. But it properly picked up only yesterday with Ballbag saying he has chosen us over the others.

This was the big news, from Friday:

Sainz is an AS reporter who knows the Mendes players. He would only have posted that Di Maria had turned down PSG/Monaco if Di Maria/Mendes wanted the story published.

Today he says that only Ronaldo has been a more decisive player for Madrid and:

Manchester are signing Di Maria and configuring a great squad to try to recover the sceptre of the Premier League.

This all feels so strange still. We just don't sign these type of top top players. Surreal almost.

SAF regularly broke the UK transfer record with Bryan Robson, Roy Keane and Andrew Cole. He then went through another short burst of big signings with RVN, Veron, Ferdinand and Rooney.

He was then forced to go 'value' as the football business model got flooded by petro dollars and he could not financially compete.

Though many have heavily criticised Woodward, I think it's been very unfair. He has already shown from his first transfers that he is not afraid to spend, even overspend on the likes of fellaini and shaw. I don't think he's to blame for the lateness of our transfers, Moreso that's been because of the dithering of our 2 most recent managers. Even with there lack of clear direction, he has convinced his bosses to spend record sums of money in our clubs history.

Well the boot is on the other foot, ronaldo also took a step down to join real madrid, if VG gets the system right which complements all our attacking players which is possible, we will get better

I like it!

It's not Brendamian Rhapsody, but catchy.

His price keeps going up every hour.

I think it'll be between 60-70 million Euros as reported by Ballbag first.

Sorry to be pedantic, but didn't Big Ron sign Ronson in 1981 I think?

I agree with the rest, and wrote a rather too long post in the Ed Woodward thread in the United forum about it.

We only get a small % out of revenue generated from shirt sales but I know what you mean, it still amounts for a lot of money. New number 7, haven't had this type of quality wearing the shirt since Ronaldo left will generate a lot of excitement. I could see Di Maria selling the greatest number of shirts in the premier league. I'm not buying one this year because of the sponsorship change but I will next season.

Agree 100%. Had Sir Alex opted to pay those 8m agent fees we would also have Hazard in our lineup right now. It's about time we showed that we're willing to pay that premium for top shelf players.
If we get Di Maria and Blind/De Jong we are just a top CB away from title challengers or scary knock out opponents. I suppose, depending on how Herrera settles, next season we will only need to invest in a top CB like Benatia and promote our young guns to replace outgoing players like Kagawa, Hernandez, Cleverley, Young etc.
People can complain all they like about the prices we paid but after this we can afford to just spend big on one top player for the next four to five summers. With Wilson, Perreira, Pearson, Januzaj and Blackett all expected to come into the side from the youth set up we are now back on track.

RVP, yes. Mata? I wouldn't put Mata in the same echelon as Di Maria and RVP.
He was the best player in the league the season before we got him. He is one of the best #10's in the world. He is pure class. I would definitely put him up there with the other two. He would be playing for Spain much more if it wasn't for the quality in that squad ahead of him.

We only think that because he wasn't wanted by Jose. If we bought him and the circumstances were different we would all feel differently about Mata
Don't get me wrong, I think Mata is a talented player - it just remains to be seen what he can really do for us and if he can replicate his quality at Chelsea.

Yes you are right ... Well spotted!

Actually your observation makes an stronger point, before Atkinson signed Robson for a UK record fee of £1.5m, we also bought Gary Birtles in 1980 for (I think) a record of £1.2m. So breaking transfer records and setting new scary financial parameters has been a cultural habit of ours since many many years and only thwarted by the emergence of petro cash.

Oh. Didn't know that. Thank you! So it started Friday and it really caught fire yesterday.
