OK, I'll spin a bit of misery. This will only be a good signing (ADM has been exceptional any time I've seen him, but dives a bit) if we get the sodding defence and central MF sorted. Without that being done we look even more 'unbalanced' squad-wise.

And... you'd think he's so good that he can't fail, but he might.... (Stoke, midweek wet etc).

Definitely a move towards ON status, however, on paper. And worth a :p ahead of today's tricky visit to Wearside.

Fair enough but do you see Mata, RvP, Rooney and Di Maria lining up in the same XI?

van Persie/Rooney
Rooney/Januzaj Mata Di Maria

If you play the same team week in week out they will suffer from fatigue which was your case last season.

IMO
De Gea

Jones/Smalling - Evans - Rojo

Rafael - A. Herrera - Carrick - Di Maria

Mata

van Persie - Rooney

De Gea

Rafael - Smalling - Evans - Shaw

Carrick

A. Herrera - Mata

Januzaj - Rooney/van Persie - di Maria

Think the latter has more going for it imo. Mata/Januzaj/Di Maria is a great trio capable of damaging from wide and also making runs inside and I think they all compliment each other very well with then who ever the striker is benefiting from that.

But I think the former is more likely although I can see it morph in to a diamond. I think we can then fit in all the best players although I don't think it will be quite as effective as the second set up could be.

If we do get Di Maria then I really don't see why we'd need to play 5 at the back given centrebacks and wingbacks are hardly a strength of ours.

Out of interest, how does bringing in a top class attacking player make us in any way "more" unbalanced?
He'd be playing instead of a Young or a Valencia, who he is much better than.
I can't see any way this can be spun to not improve us.

Just seen the ancelotti quotes, wow. Guess we and opposition fans can put to bed the belief we don't sign world class players now. RvP, Mata and Di Maria in the last few seasons.

Well mata made us more unbalanced, so it is possible. But not for a winger. Our wings are dreadful apart from a 19 year old who can't start all the time anyways. A winger was vital if we wanted our attack to work.

The squad is unbalanced in terms of too many no.10s and no.9s. We're desperate for quality out on the wings, which is what Di Maria will solve.

No he 'wanted' to leave because of the shite he got from the fans last season. It rather culminated in him making an obscene gesture with his genitals after being substituted off although he has denied that. Real buying Bale unsettled him as well. He wanted to leave because he never got the appreciation and was never valued by the Real hierarchy. His true value in the squad wasn't reflected by his salary and if reports are to be believed he isn't even in the top 10 earners at the club. It has been reported that Di Maria rejected a contract renewal after the CL final and even before James Rodiguez signing so stop trying to save face and admit that Real have been diabolical in dealing with Di Maria which led him to want to leave Madrid.
Save face?! Hang on, do you really believe he would have left had we not brought in James? Seriously?

You are right that the Perez and co have made a mess out of this and it reminds me of Ozil last year. But seeing how that turned out forgive me for not panicking just yet.

Fair enough but do you see Mata, RvP, Rooney and Di Maria lining up in the same XI?
No, but do you see Oscar, Willian, Costa, Hazard and Schürrle lining up in the same team? Or Ronaldo, Benzema, Bale, James and Isco? One or two of them have to be on the bench, same at United. I'd much rather have Rooney/Mata coming off the bench than not. And considering injuries (we always have a lot of them) everyone will get enough playing time!

This transfer makes so much sense to me. We need someone who can run with the ball, we show the world we can attract anybody, Di Maria (along with Rooney, RvP, Mata) will lure more quality players here. Rojo and Di Maria can help each others settle, they can speak Spanish with Herrera, DDG and Mata. Glazer and Woodward can shut some sceptical fans up about being leeches. Transfer of Di Maria makes me more certain there will be more business before the window slams shut.

Expecting a central midfielder and another defender.

Real are on another level to be fair. They're selling their best player of last season because they decided to smash £61m on a player who had a good WC. It's so utterly muppet that it's making the fans angry when they sign these players.

It's like anything too much of a good thing... Anyway when was the last time we bought a top top quality player from a rival (?) league? Veron? Let's hope this one's more successful eh.

This signing will mean nothing if we don't sort out our fecking defence and midfield. Spunk £60m on Di Maria and say bye bye to any decent midfielder/defender coming in.

Ozil wasn't your best player the previous season though, Vato. I also think Bale was obviously a far more clear cut success than James is.

We just don't sign world class midfielders

I am intrigued now what formation LVG wants to play and where he plans to use Di Maria.

Surely he would have worked it out already and not be like Moyes with Mata.

We're not very good at this... I mean we act like kids at Chrimbo at the thought of a marquee signing. Surely fans of clubs such as Real, Barca et al don't go mental like us lot. Well, they clearly don't... And we're not really used to it.

Of course not because Real usually have a world class (or close enough) player in the position they're about to replace with a marquee signing.

Bale in Ozil out
James in Di Maria out
Kroos in Khedira out

I always thought United would still attract big players but I would guess it has meant some players would be less attracted due to last season and no CL.

You were in the minority then.

Even United fans thought that without CL we won't be able to sign these players.

We can't. It'll make our players cry. The Spanish play it at funerals.

Haha, I didn't know that. Yes, perhaps not the most appropriate theme for one of our best players. Unless we spin it as the funeral chant for the player that's going to kill the opposition?

*gets coat*

They are on a completely different level. They unveil their signings to a stadium full of fans and get them to perform tricks akin to asking a seal to balance a ball on its nose. I've always wondered if a player has ever cocked up in one of those unveiling ceremonies?

Not the best player but one of the 3 best at the very least, just like Di Maria. As for James, he's still settling in, the season hasn't even started yet.

Well that's your opinion obviously. I myself am quite confident we will see one or two more signings.

Some, not all.
Some of us are cynical enough to realise smashing 200k a week at someone probably makes up for them not having a season in the champions league, and remember too well when City got Silva and Toure.

What?

Seriously, this is hilarious.
He only joined Madrid because we rejected him in favour of Bebe. Otherwise he would have of course joined his dream club, United. Finally, he realises that dream.

All I'm waiting for now is confirmation that we've agreed a deal with Juve for Vidal and I'd dare say we'll be playing in the CL again next year no doubt.
Curious to see all the departures though. one of (if not both) Welbeck and Hernandez is sure to leave sadly, but understandably so. I'm guessing Anderson is a dead certain pick to leave as well.
so far though

IN:
Di Maria
Herrera
Shaw
Rojo

OUT:
Giggs
Vidič
Rio
Evra
Nani

Delighted with this to be signing. He's a brilliant player that is pretty much exactly what we need in attack.

With regards to the fee, 60m is probably 10 million too steep. He was never going to go for a Sanchez like fee because unlike Sanchez, he was actually excellent for madrid and vital to them in recent times. And frankly, an extra 10 million for a player of this quality isn't that important.

Were desperate, we're loaded and he's excellent. Hope we wrap this one up quickly.
