Ange Postecoglou

Surely the recruitment team have to follow Postecoglu out the door, 3rd in net spend over the last 5 years and sitting in 15th place. Bought up a bunch of youth prospects which is always a gamble, they could be good in 6 years, or total flops like N'Dombele. It has Bale money spend written all over it. Which players actually went on to be big players for Spurs from the Bale signings? Eriksen and Lamela the only 2 that I can think of, and I never rated Lamela, I guess he kind of embodied that press from the front Pochettino style but never enough goal output and more time injured than playing.

Also with the recruitment the only player of note they brought in was Solanke who, for me, is not an upgrade over Richarlison. And baffling signings like Werner, not good enough for Chelsea who wanted top four so Spurs go and get him? Odobert? They needed CB's and you go get another attacker despite your attack being well stacked with Richarlison, Son, Werner, Johnson all able to play on the wing. Hell you could probably put Kulusevski out there on the left and he could do a job. Dragusin? Never even heard of this guy until Spurs picked him up and has looked pants just about any time I have seen him play. Granted he is only 22 but again, you are telling me there wasnt a solid older CB with decent experience they could have picked up who was cheap and happy to play that second string role behind Romero and VDV later in his career?

I get that Dragusin hasn't been great - and probably doesn't fit their model especially under Ange.

You're never going to get them all right - it's very difficult when your buying in that range and even spending more doesn't guarantee a solid addition. You can take a calculated risk on the likes of them sort of players and hope they hit the ground running and continue to get better & look like a complete bargain in a few years time.

On the flip side, someone like Sarr was in that ball park and has turned out to be a solid addition worth much more than they signed him for, whilst being a top half player.

Their injury crisis is awful but its also situation at partly of Ange's own making. His tactics put tremendous strain on the players physically and then he has no idea how to set up if his squad is jaded and can't press like demons.

The bottom line is that he has won 90 points from 61 games. That's a hair worse than Nuno's 1.5 ppg that got him sacked after 10 matches and I'm pretty sure its the worst ppg figure of any Spurs manager in the PL since Juande Ramos. And even that record is being held up by his fast start before the league figured him out. Its 64 points in the last 51 games for Ange. He's lost 25 of those 51!

It's not really very complex. He's just not a particularly good manager.
Saw a Tottenham fan break down his career on twitter I think. Could make a case for him being the most underqualified manager to ever be hired by a top-club in the PL with no prior association with said club.

I think a lot of us said that at the time, then they played really well for a couple of months and it was all forgotten.

The thing about Ange is that he wont get sacked because all the Spurs fans are too busy blaming Levy.. what for I dont know.

They talk about spending money, or that they are tight.

Well, Levy could have sold Kane years ago, kept hold of him because he wanted him at Spurs, if he was so bothered about money, they would have sold him to City.

They have recently invested in a stadium and top training ground facilities, spending money.

They have spend 165m in the summer
272m last season (granted 100m incoming from Kane)
180m in 22/23

How can Spurs fans say they dont spend money when in the last 3 years they have spent a minimum of 150m Euros.

Add to that the managers they have tried to get, in Jose, Conte and now a different approach in Ange.

I'm also of the same opinion, I just don't get why Levy gets all the hate. I guess spurs fans need someone to blame!

Any Spurs fans here care to explain the vitriol aimed at Levy?

I remember them moaning at the style of play under Conte when he had them 4th and fans said.. they want to see entertaining football.

They hired a manager who entertains, they fell for him because he spoke well in his first year and had 10 good games at the start.

Now, they are in freefall but dont want to call the manager out so, they have to blame someone right?

Isn't Ange the one who froze out Regulion, Spence, Dier etc... now Spence is one of their better full backs.

The fact that the manager cannot adapt his tactics due to injuries, should tell you he isnt the man for the job. Its always the same mistakes over and over again.

They absolutely are. They want him gone.

I think they might lament him for the fact they were in an absolute twilight period between 2015-2019 on and off the pitch and never capitalized on that, but I also think they might have just been incredibly unlucky that Covid hit when it did.

Under Poch during that period they:
  • Finished 3rd, 2nd, 3rd and 4th in consecutive seasons in the PL
  • Made 3 domestic cup semi's
  • Made the CL final
  • Saw revenue climb to be on par with that of Arsenal and Chelsea
  • Posted the #1 and #4 record profits of all-time in the PL
Heading into the 19/20 season on the back of that sort of sustained good form on the pitch, in a strong financial position with a highly-respected manger in charge, a superstar CF in his absolute prime and a shiny new stadium on the way that might have been the point they really made a go for it and went after top-level players to try and compete with the likes of City and Liverpool consistently. But then they had a £1 billion stadium open that they had to start paying off whilst they couldn't even let anyone in it for a year and a half.

I think they might have a bit of a point still in that even before Covid they never showed that much intent in the 19/20 summer window, and as of today they are still the only top 6 club that don't commit at least 50% of their turnover to paying staff wages. But then again, they've been on a slide since Poch left and you could argue they haven't put in the level of performance on the pitch that would want to make top players who command high wages go there.

Exactly, so their most successful recent period came when they didn't spend loads, Poch didn't get alot to spend, he got them to a CL final which raised their expectations too high, it was growth all of a sudden, rather than sustained growth.

They have spent money on some very good players, even getting players like Maddison, Kulu, Bentancur etc...Its not always about paying high wages, you can get mid salary players that are really good.
They backed Ange, got rid of players he didn't want in Sanhez, Doherty, Dier, Hojberg, Lo Celso, Gill, Solomon and replaced with Johnson, Porro, VDV, Udogie, Bissouma, Solanke.

He's had a pretty good run in the media of not being hounded in the way a Manchester united manager would be after even a quarter of the bad results he's had.

Amazed how long it's taken to get to this point.
