Andre Onana made another mistake. Ohnono.

Indeed he has, but that doesn't negate the fact that he made a bad mistake that cost a goal

His mistake was commiting to going to his right to early which meant when the ball bizarely swerved off to his left at the last minute (it must have hit a bump in the turf or something) he was unable to reposition himself to keep it out

Personally it just gives me flashback to last season, where we saw a bunch of mistakes which were really coming from poor goalkeeping fundamentals. The same goes for this one. That's why I think it's quite reasonable to be concerned for the future.

In terms of the mistake, if you look it at from the angle behind the goal in slow motion, it really doesn't move that much. It starts maybe a foot to the right of the penalty spot, moves centrally no further than the spot, and then back 1-2 feet right again before it hits Onana. It shouldn't ever go in - simple as that.
He plants himself behind the possible trajectory of the shot, probably a bit further to the left based on body language of Gibbs.

Without the direction change he stops that shot, that much is clear.

Was it in hockey then, because in football you do have to use anticipation in your favour. How are your examples any different from Onana's situation? The shot isn't a pea-roller, there is actual velocity in it. For any keeper to make any save, they have to anticipate where the ball is going and prepare. They can't just stand in the middle of the goal and react, that would mean every shot in the corner would be a certain goal. That's nonsense.
Of course you anticipate, but you never commit early on a 22 yard shot. It’s a huge gamble that turned into a massive mistake, without any excuses. It happens.

He has been our best player this season and one of the best goalkeepers in the league
Indeed. He’s been very good. It should still be ok to criticise a one off huge mistake. It doesn’t mean that I think he’s back to being error prone. It’s hopefully a one off. Even the best of all time make mistakes.

Not monitoring the league very closely but how many howlers did Ederson or Allison had this season? Obviously they play for high possession teams which allow low quality of chances most of the time, so the statistics could be skewed, but I just wonder. We are still tier down from the two well oiled teams, with defence and midfield and overal new style of play settling in, so we could see the statistics to go in his favour over the next couple of seasons.

I don‘t agree with this. Gibbs had a wide open shot and went for power. You have to anticipate if you want to keep it out, if it doesn‘t go straight at you.

pretty much agree. Only thing that was disheartening to see was how mentally fragile he looked after that mistake. Would rather see him shake it off and seem to bounce back without showing too much.

Have you played as a goalie? Literally, on a 20+ yard shot, you would never dive early. Firstly, the striker may very well use the good old fake shot, which will leave you stranded in a corner - you would never see top goalies do that. The striker could also use a decoy outside shot, which happens quite frequently, and thirdly, the striker may simply not strike it as cleanly as he wanted, and thus the direction is off from what he intended. As you said, he went for power, which normally reduces accuracy. Going early could leave you completely stranded. Therefore, that's why you don't look silly gambling on a penalty kick, but you get criticised for going early behind the wall on a free kick outside the box. You anticipate, but you don't move early. It's a massive mistake, and Onana would agree whole heartedly for sure.

It was a bad mistake, but bad mistakes happen from time to time, whether it's a keeper howler or a striker's missed sitter or a defender's horror challenge. We can acknowledge the bad mistake for what it objectively was and still praise Onana for having a great season for United.

He has been rubbish since he came here bar a short spell of 3 months. Not up to it at all.

How as he gone from a great season to an awful one in 2 games

To think we thought we were getting some kind of ball playing magician that would take our game to new heights.

He's not good enough but we'll be given repeated excuses as to why he shouldn't be dropped.

I wonder how his fans are gonna try and gaslight us into believing this wasn't a mistake

He isn’t equipped to play possession based buildouts from the back. He’s distribution is horrendous and he’s not capable with the ball at his feet for doing anything but hoofing it long. He was supposed to be billed as a modern keeper but couldn’t be farther from that. Just a complete disaster waiting to happen game after game.

Wasn’t his distribution something he was renowned for when we bought him ?

His distribution is very good generally. The worrying thing is that it appears to take him a while to get over making a mistake and things tend to snowball.

He's a liability. it doesn't matter if generally he's okay as a keeper, he's so prone to errors I don't see how a defence can be comfortable with him in goal. This is not something that will change.

Well done, you anticipate the 22 yard shot is going to your right, and it goes to your left. Great goalkeeping.
You truly are an expert in the field.
As a previous poster said you can try to anticipate a penalty, or a close range shot, but not a shot from centrally 4 yards outside the box, behave.

I'm as much of an expert as the next person. Doesn't mean what I'm saying isn't true.
