Andre Gomes

I didn't imply he is a bad player but not just the magician we are expecting. He is a solid player like herrera and when you look at our team we have a lot of solid midfielders. He really doesn't offer anything different to most of the midfielders we have or need.

But surely it is mostly about the player he might become, not just the player he is now. Admittedly you have to be pretty sure before firing in the big cash, but that's where scouts earn their money.

One thing is for sure, though. If we are going to get back near the top of European football, we have to get the best players in early. Once they are in a Real, a Barca, a Bayern, or (euch) a City, they are no longer transferable.

Neat and tidy isn't his job
Yes it is. As a midfielder you must be composed and know how to take care of the ball. It may not be the primary aspect, but it is something all of the world class midfielders have to their game.

This times 1000
The central midfield is the most difficult and one of the more important positions in football especially in the modern age of football. Look at all the midfielders of the big teams: Iniesta, Verratti, Modric, Pogba, Schweinstiger(pre Manchester United),Thiago, Vidal etc... They are all very well rounded players who are agile dribblers, composed and versatile distributors, and intelligent passers, very good technically and tactically intelligent(for the most part) footballers who are capable of performing everywhere on the pitch. For example, look at the Premier League's record in Europe. A big part of the reason why English teams get rocked is because of they get overrun in midfield. Verratti vs Chelsea, Modric vs Man City and vs Liverpool(last year), Iniesta vs Arsenal. The list goes on an on.

Bar tactical intelligence( his positioning/ discipline has been rather weak for Valencia, but it something that most young midfielders acquire with more experience and good coaching), Gomes fits that bill as an all round midfielder IMO. Gomes is rather inconsistent--If he wasn't then he would probably be starting for a top team by now--but is a very talented player who I would be more than open to taking a chance with, especially if our scouting team likes him as you said.

Invisible today to the point I didn't realize he'd been taken off, I think he'll lose his place to Sanches in the next game.

We should've bought Sanches when we had the chance....without doubt the real deal!

He was a doubt for today's game because of an injury. Surprised he started.

Yes, he's struggling with a leg injury. Fernando Santos shouldn't be using him until he is fully fit. He can't setup our midfield decently and the players suffer with that. André Gomes isn't as bad as he is showing in this euro and Santos has partial blame on that. Like when he used João Mário on the left against Iceland. He put him on the right today and it paid off. He should just stop inventing and playing players out of position or form.

He has been shite for a year. I can't justify spending ridiculous amounts on someone who hasn't played well in a year.

Decent player, and the potential is there, but Valencia is asking for too much. He is at best worth around 25 to 30 mill at the max, 40 mill plus is just too much. But then again in a market where Leicester thinks that Deeney is worth 30 mill, Valencia is right to quote that price.

Can't believe he's being compared to Kaká on any level. Totally unimpressive.

I have only studied him in the euros, and based on that, he doesn't impress me at all. I really do not hope we go for him after missing out on Renato Sanchez as the latter actually looks very talented.

Not good enough for the level we want to get to.

Hopefully our interest in him was just paper talk.

Don't know much about him. But going by what was being discussed pre euros, he seems extremely restricted under strict instructions to not try anything. Plus looked unfit or injured and almost short of any kind of rhythm. Either he is that or just had a stinker.

Poor for his club. Crap in the euros.

Even the basics are poor. Can't blame that on team mates or systems.

Do not want.

Yeah he would be terrible in the premier league... comes across as a soft player too so even worse. Not worth half of what Valencia are demanding

He just doesn't try anything, his touch and technique are good but he doesn't seem to want to take responsibility on, he just floats around the fringes of the game.

One of those players where I go "I just don't get it". Okay he's neat and tidy in possession but if you aren't dominating the game I struggle to see how he's useful. Never a 40 Million quid player imo

I'm yet to see any reason to be impressed by him

Can't really evaluate him on this tournament. Loads of players have been subpar.

That's true.

So let's rate him on last season where he average too.

Nowhere near worth the big fees being talked about. I'm guessing it's Valencia who are feeding those to the news so some club is stupid enough to make a big bid.

He's one of those players that gets overrated because he's handsome, just like Hummels.

It's funny how nobody takes into account that he has been playing out of position 85% of the time.

He's been absolutely terrible this Euro but it's obvious he isn't playing his normal game. He doesn't look well physically and mentally so it's too early to write him off. I don't know why he is so nervous and can barely string a simple pass.

He's been piss poor and nothing like what I have seen of him with Valencia. Is he injured?
Yeah he has been playing with a mild injury, and not to mention has started the game on the left throughout the tournament.
