Mad statement. Apart from the save that would have otherwise meant Argentina lost the final, Having a keeper that is good with penalty saves is worth its weight in gold for National teams. When it went to penalties in the final, you knew Martinez was going to save at least one.
Yes he can make saves, great ones in fact.
He also has a massive pair on him.
His overall game would not be an upgrade from DeGea though.

He's just a modern day Jerzy Dudek.

There is a reason Martinez plays for villa, he's not that good.

He is 30 and the majority of his top flight appearances have come in the last three years (110 out of 130).

Probably one of the worst keepers to win a world cup.
This post is giving me barthez vibes

Penalty shoot out saves are absolutely not what we should be basing our next keeper on.

Oh let me be clear I dont want him at United. I just thought to call him one of the worst keepers in the World Cup was a bad take. He is a perfect National teams keeper.

I'm curious how our first choice GK leaving can be reframed to be a positive for us when negotiating prices with other teams for their GK.
Should we have extended DDGs contract? This is not a new development - both parties would have known about the expiry of his contract and the fee is nearly agreed keeping that in mind.

I'm still disappointed that the club didn't test Villa's resolve on Martinez. PL experience is a massive factor for me, unless the player involved is absolute world class - and I think this goes doubly for keepers: DDG was horrid in his first season(s), the French clown looked as out of place as a loud fart at a funeral and Taibi, well, words aren't really needed.

In all honesty, I haven't seen enough of Onana to be happy or not (although, boy, did we need an upgrade). I just know Martinez would have been a good fit: I like keepers who get in opponents' faces, are strong characters and are strong physically - something DDG never has been
I like Martinez and certainly think he would be an improvement on De Gea, but he's not good enough on the ball to be ETH's long-term #1. From what ETH did at Ajax and seems to now be doing here (bringing in Onana), it's obvious he feels that it's vital for his play-style to have a goalkeeper who can be part of the build-up and find the right passes while being comfortable while being pressed. Martinez certainly has his strengths, but that isn't one of them.

Inter has to sell, we've negotiating over a price, its not that we paid them a price they want right away, if we did there wouldn't be any negotiation.
I hope you are right man. I rather wish if we just pay up and move on. We need the player in early.

I absolutely think it should be something we base our back-up keeper on - or at least it being a huge requisite for whoever it is.(Unless Onana is brilliant at saving them of course)

Having a penalty saving specialist on the bench would be great.

Onana is not. He has about 21% penalty save rate - that’s not very good

Is it not? If the XG for penalties is about 0.88 or whatever doesn’t that suggest he’s doing better than expected?

The 0.22 not scored includes shots off targets though, so it doesn't reflect the expected save rate.

As per the below the average PL goalkeeper saves 17% of on target penalties.

his tactic of going the opposite way to the strike really didn't work

Mount reportedly went from 80k a week at Chelsea to 250k here (up to 300k with bonuses). But that's quite fair imo given his profile. So you still got a point here. I only hope we'd stop being stupid at handling contracts.

Anyway checking the latest reports he'd be at 115k a week bonuses included so it seems we do learn from our mistakes.

Mount is on 200k up to 250k with bonuses, it was confirmed.

Why get caught up in it at all? Nobody except for Mount and the United accounting dept need know really.
Tbh I have no idea why. We're discussing Mason wages and I even said 'reportedly' since that's what I read.
Athletic reported 200-250k with bonuses
Ok must be so then thanks for the info. They're probably the best source around I think.

Don't know much about him. Only seen him in the Champions League final when they lost to Manchester City and he seemed a bit casual, laid back and then a bit erratic.
Hope we aren't signing today's version of Barthez!

He seemed casual? what when he penetrated City's press on numerous occassions?

This is a good move at sensible price etc. Style wise makes sense. I do think people need to relax though. We aren't getting 'the best keeper in the world'. Not sure 90pc of people saying that cared about him before one single game. He can still improve though and is clearly at the top level with his feet. But that is only a part of what a goal keeper does

I think this quality that he will bring was one of the glaring weaknesses in our game last season and without addressing it, would hold us back in the modern game.

I'm not saying we're buying prime Nueur, but his ability with the ball at feet should transform our game. I think managers value this almost as much as shot-stopping ability at this moment in time.

Onana should allow us to exert greater control on games and keep the ball better. He may not be able to pull off those incredible saves DDG can, but maybe we'll have less attempts on our goal with Onana between the sticks and have an overall improvement defensively and offensively.

As you said, stylistically it looks like a perfect match on paper for EtH.

YES! It means that your mere presence deters goals.
I agree. The World Cup final shootout is a good example. Martinez got his hand to Frances first PK, and saved the 2nd, which meant that Tchouaméni felt like he had to get it right in the corner to have a chance at beating him, causing him to overcompensate and miss

In what way did he seem erratic in the final, not one bit of it did he ever seem any of those things you mentioned.

He nullified MC press from the first minute and picked passes between their forwards for fun.

That’s worth getting excited for me. I’m not expecting him to be our Manuel Neuer or anything absurd like that. But I have been desperate for a decade for us to become a team that has all the progress tactical qualified - intense pressing, passing it out from the back, being able to play high quality possession footy in the opponents box etc And over time it’s hit home just how important the GK is in doing that - 7 years ago I had no clue.

For that alone, and the teams development in working with that through repetition, regardless of him being a top top GK or not, makes this a signing worth looking forward to.

Because DeGea leaving means Onana wants to come here to be undisputed no1. And having to sign a gk to be able to not extend with DeGea, doesn‘t make our position stronger but weaker imo.

I'd like to think a fee for Onana was agreed prior to DDGs announcement rather than DDGs accouncement putting a spanner in the works.
