André Onana | signed for United | On a flight to NYC

I think our struggles were a mix of the following:
1) Struggle for control
2) Struggle to create good quality chances
3) Taking way too many low percentage shots
4) Struggle to convert chances created.

I agree that Onana doesn't fix all these. No single player does. Not even Harry Kane. It's about incremental adjustments all throughout the system. Onana and Mount will help us gain better control and sustain pressure.
And also the chances creating imo. The signing of Onana and Mount would help us to be better at the 1) and 2) and 3) I think. But we also need a #9 who is not only good at chances converting but also at hold up and linking to fix all the issues you mentioned. Kane would be perfect for that. But as it does look like we won't get him so let's hope whoever we sign would at least be good at hold up and linking. And imo it's quite understandable why ETH seems really want to keep Greenwood. He's really good at finishing.

Btw my Inter mate said the biggest strength of Onana is actually his ability to remain really calm and cool in the heat. He's also a pretty good GK with no real weakness and as everyone has said he's excellent with his feet so this is a no brainer imo. We definitely should get this done asap I think.

Ah found it. And ya, he distributes pretty darn well against one of the harder sides to do it against:

Look how the City forward line don't even bother pressing him either because they know they will leave that space in behind. I agree a GK's primary job is to stop goals going in but damn that would be so useful too especially for controlling the game.

Even if Onana is a flop it will mean progress because you can't move forward by staying still and keeping De Gea around. I know it's difficult for some to grasp but a GK must be a good footballer as well as stop and prevent goals in a team with a head coach who places emphasis on initiating attacks from the back. And with the EPL being more and more centred around pressing from the front, it's essential we move forward and attempt to play front foot dominant football.
Yes absolutely. How can a team build up well if it doesn’t really try? Hopefully Onana will be great but the main point is that having a keeper like him will allow the team to practice and through repetition become a team for which passing out from the back and becoming press resistant is hopefully the norm.

My Inter mate said their finance is very very bad despite reaching a CL final last season they basically have no cash. They took Sanchez, Lukaku for us so I'd be happy to pay that €5m for the friendship and as a thank you gestion :D

Now when you put it that way, seems right that we return a favour! :D

Nope, not Zion Suzuki. I'd slot him right in the first team. First name on the team sheet.

Zion Suzuki is a name that came from the last human city of the Matrix creating a motorbike brand.

Wouldn't mind a fresh option having a #2 and shipping out Henderson though

Yeah sure thing indeed :D

They know we'd absolutely need a new keeper and Onana is good and pretty perfect for us but they didn't get greedy and ask some crazy amount as well.

I don't think we can afford to not sell Henderson if we want a chance at getting Onana. He's one of the few valuable assets we can sell

Probably significantly better, as Raya is not a very good goalkeeper

He' had most saves in Premier League this season and was 5th for clean sheets (12) last season.

That's about every 3rd game he keeps a clean sheet with a defence, that has no big names in it. Not bad and it's in the best league in the World.

Let’s see if there is a demand for him this transfer window at quoted prices then. So far not much…

from my research, they both play in goal, but where they differ is that it’s for different teams. they both enjoy taking goal kicks with one of their two feet and when it comes to penalties, their preference is to save them, if that’s at all possible. they both have hands, but they wear gloves from different manufacturers (probably.) if we were to purchase either, ten hag would most likely place them in goal, rather than have them occupy one of our outfield positions.

Cheers mate. The metric I saw yesterday from a random dude off twitter said they both scored very high on the goalkeeping stat, so it's nice to hear it from someone who's watched them closely.

They also both have the letter "a" in their name twice, so that gives me some comfort. Van der Sar had that, so they clearly have potential.

Not much so far, but Brentford quoting him at 50m probably also is why we don't go that much further in our bids with Onana. We know we can get a decent goalkeeper for 50m.

Brentford already purchased his replacement, so they must sell Raya - be it for 50, 30 or else. They can’t allow to lose him for free next year

Not convinced by him but will back him like any new signing. Looks very erratic at times with his saves which will be punished in the prem.

He will definitely cost us points this season and give away some cheap goals but I hope fans stick with him.
Maybe he will cost us some points, but not as much as de Gea did last season. It will definitely pay off, as he will be an integral part in a much more controlled style of play.

I'm really looking forward seeing him and Mount play as I think they will both prove to be big steps in the right direction. I really like the direction this transfer window takes even with supposed rather limited funds.

If he we can somehow quantify his influence in us being way stronger in other areas because of his abilities, then he will be fine. Can't just measure goalkeepers on goals prevented due to saves anymore.

Really happy it looks Onana will be our number one. I feel he improves us as a team.

It will take time getting used to though as we are all accustomed to seeing De Gea in goal and can almost predict what he's going to do next. Onana brings that unpredictability, much better with the ball at feet and a bigger presence but a much weaker shot stopper.

There are few GK's in the world that are elite in every aspect of goalkeeping. Onana does seem to be a GK that will make the odd howler, that being said his ability to retain possession without lumping it to the opposition will be a huge bigger gain. Hope we get this done.

You know it’s getting done when players agree to a contract first. The club won’t back out now.

I will say something about Onana:

I watch lots of italian football throughout the year and i can say that he will be an improvement on David regarding footwork/passes etc but I can say that he takes great risks dribbling players - our hearts will be pounding lots!!

He is not as good a shot-stopper as David but EtH may be able to improve him there.

The thing is if we actually manage to play out from the back without restoring to hoofing it to the sidelines or losing a ball in dangerous situations because we were high-pressed - that already takes out a lot of the last-ditch shot-stopping. As the whole defensive side is more composed to deal with dangerous situations.

Our three most press resistant players will be our GK, LCB, LB.

Backline of Onana, Licha and Varane will make wonders for our gameplay and play from the back. Plus Shaw and its fantastic.

Not so sure about this. Easily worse than peak De Gea. Current De Gea though? Possibly, but not majorly so I'd have thought.
Spot on. Peak De Gea was one of the greatest shot stoppers there is. However the current version of him is not close to his peak. Onana is a good shot stopper, not elite, but his commanding of the box, distribution, ability to play it out and coming out claiming crosses(compared to De Gea glued to the line) will prevent some of these saves happening.

yes he will make some errors and also mig he come up with some blunders but so do some of the best in the game, Neuer included.

the effect on United game however will be a lot more positive.

The video rate him higher for his distribution than Raya or Costa also a pretty good analysis on how having DDG really fecks up our buildup from the back. Our playstyle is gonna improve drastically, shot-stopper, elite with the ball, fearless against press bring him in.

Onana gives off that aura of physicality and command from the box and just a general vibe of confidence which we haven't got from Gea.

And if anyone wonder why he is not playing for his national team apparently the manager from Cameroon asked him to switch to a more traditional goalkeeping style, less aggressive. Onana didn’t agree and instead started questioning Song’s tactics and even asked him why he starts Nkoulou. Then he got dropped.

55+5 probably gets this done. Hopefully Inter respond to us quickly and get him asap, and if there's one player you need in place for pre-season when trying to implement a new style, it is a ball playing goalkeeper.

Having both Mason and Onana for pre-season would be massive afterwards we can play with Atalanta for Hojlund,

The most important part if we bring Onana is that he will give the team so much confidence.

I can't wait for this to be done. I think he will have the same effect on our backline as Martinez did. Ability is one thing, plenty of players can do what they do in the right circumstances, but the confidence to play that way all the time is infectious.

Great video. Perfectly illustrates how DDG treats the ball like a hot potato and how that damages our overall play.

If we get him in it will become apparent quite quickly exactly how much DDG was negatively impacting not only our build-up but also how opposing teams pressured us. Then we will have to see if the occasional worldie save that he used to make and the fact that he seems to be a nice guy justified us sticking with him for so long.

I can't name one GK in the league top teams that doesn't have some absolute howlers against their name. It's the other things Onana can provide that Dave unfortunately can't which is the real positive.

Personally, I don't care about goalkeeper clangers beyond that weekend and as long as they are infrequent enough to not be beyond embarrassing. Onana brings in a unique skill that is required for us. I'm ready to accept the clangers and then revel in the beautiful passing.
