Just seen the third goal. Can't be palming that straight to them. He doesn't seem to have any control over his saves. Just wants to get hands to it and doesn't direct them

There was a moment where he came out and dealt with a long ball over the top, but instead of a fairly easy pass out to Dalot (who was free) he just hoofed it.

I am a fan of Onana and want him to be a massive success, but I don’t understand why we bought him if we aren’t going to utilise his ball playing more. Granted there are injuries in defence, but it feels like he has actually been told to just get rid and make sure he doesn’t make any mistakes, rather than trusting him to play his game (as he did in the CL final, to good effect).

Better performance in terms of saves but again his technique looks really weird - and not “good” weird. Again I wonder if he is just so desperate not to make any mistakes that he parties everthing rather than trying to catch it. Hopefully once his confidence recovers, this improves.

He stopped us from getting absolutely hammered yesterday. Wasn't at fault for any of the goals, weird to come down on him for yesterday and basically confirms you've got an agenda if you do.

Probably laughs at his own jokes.

I wouldn't even mind that much, but Onana was our only player to come out of that match with any credit at all. After half time, our entire first choice back four and both DMs were injured or unfit, while we're playing the best side in the world. We let them have 10 shots on target (more than Liverpool had in the fecking 7-0) and Onana was the only reason it wasn't the bumming to end all bummings.

But nah, got to wade into the thread of the player I have an agenda against and try and dunk on him anyway.

Saved us from embarrassment yesterday. A couple of very dodgy challenges too though.

It appears to me his distribution isn't as good as it's made it out to be but it doesn't matter because even if it was it would be 100% wasted with the way we play.

Yes, it's very boring and unimaginative. Another agenda that is fuelled by social media and lapped up by the sheep.

Credit where it’s due. He still seems a bit clumsy but he still adapts to play for the second best team on the pitch most games.

I have to agree with you on the 3rd goal.

He made some good saves yesterday and kept the score down but I believe he should have palmed that shot away for a corner.

They had ten shots on target yesterday. There’s no way Onana can come in for any criticism, I thought he was great.

his distribution is excellent, it all boils down to not trusting those ahead of him and rightly so.

The last couple of games have sorted his confidence out, he was the keeper we thought we were buying yesterday. Kept the scoreline respectable.

We will not see the best of him until we have a settled backline and players who run the channels.

Easily our best player against City. Haaland should've had 4. Doesn't help him either if we concede penalties every game.

He did make some very good saves but I thought he was atrocious on the second goal. Haaland’s header goes in the centre of goal about chest height. He dived past it and under it.

This is an absolutely wild take. I've just watched it again to make sure I wasn't going mad.

I'll give the caf another few days before logging back on I think...

Oh come on, Haaland puts the header back where the keeper is coming from, from point blank range. It would have been an incredible save had he saved it because he has to guess where Haaland is going to place the ball from that close

Even in a good performance he still doesn't inspire confidence when it comes to shot stopping. He's clearly much better with the ball at his feet than De Gea but that doesn't make a difference when the team is not setup to get the best out of it. Just have to look at Brighton to see how far up their GK plays and how often he gets involved with instigating play, or Ederson at city where the team's movement provides Ederson with loads of options for his accurate passing. As it stands, the way we are using Onana means that there isn't really that much of a positive impact on our play and performance, couple that with his very poor handling (even when compared to De Gea's last couple seasons) and at best he is providing no difference to having De Gea in the team or could be argued is currently worse than having De Gea in the team. Now that isn't 100% Onana's fault (the poor handling is all his fault) but also the fault of the coaching staff not cultivating a team that allows him to shine with his passing.

I think that post is just a post from an poster who already decided that Onana is crap.

He’s the worst first choice keeper I’ve seen at United and he’ll be the end of Ten Hag. We’re basically starting every game a minimum of one goal behind.

Even looking for faults and errors (even going so far to use words like atrocious in a situation that doesnt warrant that kind of description) in Onana his good games so the poster wont be at the risk of looking stupid for prematurely writing Onana off. His mind if already made up and will look for moments to confirm his ideas because that is easier than changing an opinion.

It’s not difficult. He’s a mediocre shot stopper at best. If a ball goes in the centre of the goal at that height then it’s always questionable. He anticipates and dives early and as a result he dives past the ball and under it. He did make some good saves to go with it yesterday but second and third are both questionable.

Onana made some incredible saves yesterday. We can reiterate the idiocy of letting De Gea go in the name of “transforming our attack” all we want but here we are now and our new keeper is starting to find his gloves…and his vaunted passing isn’t all that impressive after all.

I dont agree. I dont think you can blame Onana for a free Haaland header from very close by. The only way the goalkeeper stops that is if the striker accidentally hits the goalkeeper. If that attempt was saved it would have been called a miracle save. Not making that save isnt something to blame Onana for.

That said, questionable is already a very different qualification than ''attrocious''.

Change the record. Jesus Christ.
Why? It's not supposed to be funny, is it. His job is to keep the ball out of the goal, he averages 2 goals in every game. And don't get started as he is a modern goalie blah blah, his job is to keep the ball out of the net. Striker's job is to put the ball in the net. Simple.
Courtois in the final against Liverpool is the example of what a goalie should do, he saved 9 attempts and they won the cup. Nothing to do with being able to pass the ball play a high line etc.

First time he has dived the wrong way when facing a penalty? Hilarious that he has had to face a number of penalties already this early in the season

I don’t blame him for the goal. The space City were allowed was scandalous and there are many parts at play. I point it out as for me it’s another example of his questionable goal keeping and even in a game he did quite well there were others. I don’t think it’s much to ask a goalkeeper to not dive past a tame header that goes in the centre of the goal. If he rockets it in from point blank range it’s a different matter. It’s a looped header that goes in the goal at chest height.

If the only way a keeper can stop that is if it accidentally hits him the same could be said for the first header which he obviously got plaudits for.

I’ve just watched it again to see if I was being harsh. Even his starting position on the cross is bizarre. He’s standing past his near post and gives himself too much ground to cover.

Simple is the perfect word for your takes in this thread.

No player in this team would be able to take advantage of his passing anyway. How many of our midfielders can control a ball under pressure, then turn and lay it off to beat the press? How many times did Onana have the ball yesterday after yet another back pass from Maguire/Evans, then push up out of his box with no midfielder dropping in to get it off him? When he has the ball he has two options : Play with the CBs or a fullback who is usually hugging the touch line (who gets closed down seconds after getting the ball due to our bad build up structure with the ball finding its way back to Onana again) or go long to Højlund/Rashford.

We have no one in our midfield who can get the ball while being closed down and find a solution to beat the press. City have got several of that type of player...... Foden, Bernardo, Alvarez etc. Contrast that with our midfield that can't keep the ball longer than 5 seconds before playing a hopeful pass up the pitch or passing backwards. Onana was actually our most progressive player yesterday, that's very embarrassing.

2 absolute crap saves with pushing the ball above him and straight to Haaland, one lead to a goal line clearance the other one lead to a goal. Great game indeed.

We all knew that our back line is what it is. There was no need to “upgrade” at keeper in light of other far more serious deficiencies in the outfield. But as I said before here we are and it’s great to see Onana making challenging saves. But as for his passing, it’s definitely an upgrade on De Gea but not by that much. And his tendency to hold the ball at his feet until he’s under pressure from an attacker actually retards rather “transforms” our attack. He needs to release the ball far more quickly to at least give us a chance at an overload against the opposition, but by hanging onto the ball for eons he allows the defense to reorganize and easily swat anyway any pathetic attack we might muster.

Nope. It's about being brave and inviting the press, then having the composure to thread a ball into the space that has been vacated.

Still trotting out that claim I see.

He must hold onto the ball to draw the press and create gaps in behind for other players to fill and look for the ball. It's standard practice really when your trying to play out from the back like that with the keeper.

Would you rather he hoofed it aimlessly down the middle or out for a throw under no pressure?

I hope you're not seriously suggesting that it's working.

I'd be more concerned about why Haaland was completely unmarked at the far post!
