Fair enough for him but he's a burden heading into next season.
Our priorities were ST, CM, CDM, CB and GK - I think most people would agree with that. We got all of them (albeit Amrabat on loan, with Casemiro +Mainoo coming in) and would have bought a CB had it not been for Maguire staying (who, by the way has been one of our best CB this year).
Let's not rewrite history. De Gea had to go. Onana not being good enough won't change that. Furthemore to those complaining about his ball playing not improving our buildup, ask yourself why we've bought a ball playing GK and are playing even more long balls than last year. Do you not think it's something to do with the manager specifying he wants us to be more direct?
I seriously doubt that Onana is better in training than the Turkish guy. I even wonder what kind of GK coaches do we have, allowing this guy to wear gloves at first team matches?? That's seriously bad.

We have a full season to judge him on now, and he honestly looks shocking. Fundamentally he seems very flawed.
I do think he’s been an improvement in playing out from the back, and it’s a shame that it doesn’t really work with what’s in front of him. Would be good to see him consistently with Martinez and Shaw.

His goalkeeping ability is what you would expect when you put an outfield player in goal.

Don't think he is good at anything, except running forward and kicking the ball away earlier. Not that it helps the attack much. He is just punting it.

Knew this was a disaster from the moment it happened. Genuinely felt like social media pressure caused the club to do this. De Gea was a top class keeper. This season is exactly what would’ve happened to this mentally fragile team years before if it wasn’t for him saving us.

He might be able to cut out some of the silly error but it still won’t solve the issue that he just isn’t a very good shot stopper. Never understood how we thought paying so much money for him was a good idea.
A very accurate take at that. I've been using my newbie posts to try point out his glaring weaknesses and normally get the classic 'lol you would say that Dave' because of my username. It feels like I've been banging my head against the wall for months, even since his supposed renaissance after the cup of nations.
I see the same issues time and time again on goals scored against him and even the saves he does make. I was never more than an amateur league goalkeeper but still had plenty of training sessions with GK coaches and even some ex-pro's and so much of his technique is just plain wrong.
I've been told lots of times the fact he has played for Barca, Ajax, Inter and United means I'm obviously wrong because their scouts know more than me but I have my beliefs as to why he spent most of his time in a weak Dutch league before Inter took a punt when he was free. I dont believe for one second United's scouts had anything to do with the signing, this is clearly a ETH thing.
Also the stat about the amount of shots his faced, I have no doubt at all teams are obviously aware how bad he is and will take more shots because of that. His poor positioning, tendency to try gamble where shots will go and his awful footwork and diving technique make so many shots look unsaveable.
I'm glad the tide seems to be turning again and the majority can see him for the absolute disaster he is.
Absolutely, teams can make mistakes based off of that very thinking "oh he was at Barcelona" then he must be good. Next team "oh he was at Barcelona and Ajax" he must be good etc etc
His on the ball ability isn’t all it’s cracked up to be either in my opinion, for every good pass he picks out there’s a dozen others that drift aimlessly out for a throw in, how many times has he swept up as well just to complete shank it into row z, genuinely think he’s the worst keeper in the league at this point, even if his on the ball ability was brilliant give me a keeper who actually saves things all day long! Everything he does just looks awkward !

Than he went and spent 50m on a GK when we needed a CDM, while loaning a CDM from Fiorentina for 10m. Everything from top to bottom last summer was shady and questionable at best. Many on here pointed it out, and many were slated and even banned for being too negative when pointing out the obvious. So let's not pretend that everyone had their heads in the sand last summer.

I would be the first to argue that the actual signings were poor but that doesn't mean we didnt need a GK. If it were up to me I'd have signed Rice above all. We spent 50 on a GK first because it was the easiest deal. No one is arguing that we don't do poor business.
With the actual situation we had back then, I felt GK was one of our weaker needs. We had DDG on standby and Kovar on the books. Myself I preferred Onana over Raya for example, but considering the deal Arsenal got, while we paid 50m it was also a bad choice. 50m on Onana was an easy deal because we were stupid and Inter were smart, we overpaid that's why it was easy, it's no excuse. ST, CM, CDM, CB and also a LB were all bigger priorities than a GK.
Great examples here of him "cheating" and gambling on where the ball is going.
