Us signing a quality midfielder... Something will go wrong

Woodward will share some story about a Spanish prostitute and offend him or spill a cup of coffee on his agent

Maybe our luck with midfielders will end up like Chelsea's luck with strikers :nervous:

Third. I don't think that Pool and Arsenal are that good.

Same. We've still got a massive squad to easily compete in the league and some great players to make up for the other holes in our team.

---------------De Gea--------
Rafael---Smalling--Evans--Shaw
---------Carrick--Herrera--------
--Januzaj---Mata-----Nani/Kagawa
-------------Van Persie-------------

That is still a very good team. Wouldn't surprise me if we get a cup along with a good title challenge.

I'll just reply to this since others are asking me pretty much the same thing. The answer is no - I haven't seen him play a huge amount. Maybe I'm completely wrong, I hope I am. His body just looks a little feeble to me. Not saying he'll flop or that he's not good enough, I think he's a really exciting talent. I hope it's not an issue.

He does look small, sorta like Hernandez, but i'll reserve judgement til I see him play.

Still not enough, we need another CM player and a wide player instead of playing guys like kagwa who are not wide players. Has for Nani, a waist of time much like his last 3 years

Scholes wasn't overly tall, and look at he career he had. Xavi, Iniesta etc.

Herrera is 6ft though - taller than scholes.

Not that height matters too much in the modern game, not if we want to play a passing game. It might have mattered more with Moyes in charge.

Very good team on paper, and whilst I agree Mata in the whole is probably where we want to be thinking, LvG has a real dilemma in utilising Rooney. Seeing his inclination to play so deep on occasion, could he take Carrick's place?

He was willing to join us last year as well. So who actually persuaded him?

Umm but see there's a massive difference between then and now mate :

2013 :

Athletic finished 12th in La Liga with the prospect of a bleak future. It was a very unstable time for Ander with Marcelo Biesla being sacked unceremoniously. Two of their best players - Javi Martinez and Fernnando Llorente had left in the space of one season.

Meanwhile United had been on the crest of a wave. Champion's of England by 11 points and valiantly going toe to toe with one of the Top 3 squads in Europe. There was a lot of optimism and the keyword of continuity with the chosen successor to the greatest manager of all time. Also we'd been guaranteed fixtures in European football for almost 2 decades.

This summer is clearly a stark contrast to that.

2014 :

Athletic finished 4th in La Liga, qualifying for the Champion's League in a long while and for a Basque like Ander that's a great accomplishment. They've built a brand new stadium replacing the old San Mames.Just like it would be for a local Manc to hypothetically lead United/ City into Europe when they'd been out for some time. It just leads to a lot of emotional satisfaction. Players are human too and he's about to miss out on that.

United meanwhile (still a Top 3 European club btw) are out of the Champion's League and the Europa League. The aura of Sir Alex and the fortress at Old Trafford had clearly been worn off partially during the last season. The optimism of 2013 has been replaced by apprehension surrounding our last manager who I shall not name. In comes Louis and it's all hunky dory again. You can't deny that the atmosphere around the club and even here would've been much more tense if the last manager was still here.

We can be pretty sure a lot of players would've had doubts if he who will not be named was still in charge (particularly players of flair).

Unless Herrera is a lot more defensive than I've been led to believe then him and Wayne looks filmsier than anything we put out last season.

He is 6 feet tall, which actually isn't small at all.
He is not a small guy. He just has a baby face.. He is our new baby face assassin! Ole 2.0!
I'm actually surprised Hernandez is apparently 175cm (on wiki).
Thought he was shorter than that.

Yes peeps. He's tall, just slightly taller than Hernandez who has a very similar build, im not talking about height here. Im talking about his frame and his core. He has a 'small body'. Thats just on appearance, I havent said it will affect his physicality

So basically he's skinny.

LVG will do what's best for the team, which is probably Mata as the number 10. If it wasn't for his existing relationship and trust in Van Persie I would say Rooney would be the one playing up top but as it stands I think Van Persie being the main man is the safer bet. Either Rooney is getting dropped or he's going on the left. And if he were to end up playing in midfield it would more likely be next to Carrick rather than instead of him.

He made more tackles last season than anyone in the Spain world cup squad, that was a stat I read on twitter anyway.

Not sure if it is true or where I could check that stat for proof though.

That may say more about the Spanish world cup squad...

Where was he playing for Athletic?

Agreed. Don't think Carrick is mobile and dynamic enough to be an everyday starter if we want to challenge for the title. If I'm a City or Chelsea supporter or manager and see a midfield with Mata, Januzaj, Carrick, Kagawa, and Herrera as well as a defensive unit including an 18 year old LB and CB's who have barley played together I'd be extremely confident.

Sides like that who have a ton of pace, technique, and power will run over that midfield.

yes he tackles but from a more offensive position. I'd say Rooney and Herrera would mean 2x #8 in midfield where at least one of them should be real #6 to protect defense

If it casts our player in a favourable light I will believe it. And if it turns out not to be true I will gladly point out that it was a bollocks stat anyway.

I agree LvG will do what is best for the team/greater good, but lets not pretend that Rooney, being probably our highest paid player is suddenly going to spend every game on the bench, he'd likely be sold before that happens.

Mata may be a better number 10, and RvP better as sole striker, but you can't simply bench Rooney for most of the season - he'll want out come the end of September!
