Ander Herrera is a Manchester United Player!

Should I post stats about Herrera? Who was that guy who's stats junkie? Anyway, he's perfect for United. Drives forward, knows how to score, strong in defense. AND A MIDFIELDER.

Assuming we play 433, would Herrera be the attacking player of the middle 3?

If so, where would that leave Mata? Or Kagawa for that matter?
Every time he usually plays as one of the flanking players in 4-3-3 left or right, he's better on the left though. In LVG system he would be the Box to Box player.

As I understand he plays as a CM not as no. 10. I could be wrong though but I dont think we would go for another nr. 10 as we have enough of those.

He's played as a 10 predominantly this season but can play deeper just as well.

Carrick shouldn't be a starter.
Yes he should. A bad season under an incompetent manager doesn't mean that he shouldn't be a starter. He has been a top performer for us for many years, and the last time we had a good manager he was our main important player and was on run for player of the year in EPL.

As opposed to the 29 year old Fernandino, who was an absolute bedrock of the Brazil team when you signed him, with his massive 4 caps.

I guess he was shit too?

Why so defensive? I've already said Ander's lack of caps isn't an indication of his quality. Just pointing out that he's nowhere near being a mainstay in the squad - a move to Man Utd would help him there.

Might surprise you but I wasn't a regular viewer of Ukraine football so had no idea how good Fernandinho was/wasn't before he joined City. I do regularly watch Athletic Club though, which is why I'm comfortable stating my opinion on him.

I get the impression Hunter and Ballbag are desperate for more Spain-to-England success stories so hype up any potential transfer of that kind.

What they say isn't too far off though. Personally, I think he's a good player and would definitely add to Man Utd's midfield. That's a huge price for him though, I don't see how you can justify spending it (even though I'm aware it's impossible to pay less when dealing with Athletic Club). I also think that Ander on his own doesn't solve all your midfield problems which isn't ideal given how much of your budget will be used on him.

Nah, his team mate Iturraspe was.

How do you know how much of a budget we have though? plus, I think the majority of us can admit that he alone doesn't solve our central midfield problems, but he'll go a long way towards improving it. Since Scholes retired we've had absolutely nobody close to stepping into his boots, even Carrick's good season before last didn't fill the void.

This lad is better than anybody we have and that's a great start to fixing what SAF neglected for whatever reason.

Reading his interview he did with Andy Mitten back in december, he said it was an honour that Park was marking him so aggressively in the Europa because it meant Ferguson sussed him out as a threat.

Add to the fact that now he actually has someone alongside him who can actually attack, defend and get up and down the pitch, the burden isn't on him to do everything.

I take it this isn't getting announced today then? I'm not worried or anything but the sooner we wrap the deal up, the better.

Herrera along with another CM, a CB, a LB and possibly a winger and things will look very promising.

Defending isn't about fear and chopping up people ankles.

Where did I say it was?

There is nothing wrong with having a player in there to bring a big of steel. You get a foot in and disrupt the opposition that is to your advantage. It gives attacking players a platform and disrupts the oppositions rhythm.

LVG obviously agrees having a player like De Jong in his team anyway - rather than another ball player, so I suspect that's what we might see here.

He is 33. Are we going to replace him when he's 40? He needs to be replaced for next season and should be on the bench.

Just the one?

If thats the case, then all we'll have is Carrick, Fletch, Cleverely, Fellaini & Herrera in CM. If last season is anything to go by - we're fecked with those 1st 4 CM's. I'd like a Defensive CM that can play & a box to box CM also. Its not just about the starting 11 - we need quality back-ups too.

I'm absolutely sick of seeing the same faces in our mid-field, who arent up to it for varying reasons..

It depends on Van Gaal and the system he wants to play. If he wants to play a double pivot with 2 box to box midfield players then we definitely need another signing, someone like Vidal. If he wants to play one sitting then we probably need a Pogba/Strootman like player.

It might be that Herrera ends up playing in a two man midfield, but i really feel we need to play him in a 4-3-3, with two box to box and one sitting midfielder to get the best out of him.

BarneyLFC and Bob Loblaw both Liverpool fans saying that it's not a good deal. Heh.

I think the notion that Carrick hasn't declined just because he doesn't need to run much is flawed. He was fecking way below par last season.

Could we try and give him a few minutes in a pre-season match before deciding on his fate.

He's a good player. From all accounts, he's a thoughtful and intelligent man who loves football and who wants to play for United. He has caught the eye of LvG who thinks he can use him. What's not to love?

My prediction. He will become a key man in our next team and he will become a fan favourite - not just for his ability, but for his attitude.

Anyway Ander, if you're in the Lowry Hotel and you've checked out the minibar and now you're on here because you're wondering about fan reaction: Welcome to Manchester. You don't have to eat the meat and potato pies if you don't like them, but they are part of our cultural heritage.

Sexy name and a good looking guy.

It's a yes from the caf

I don't know why we just don't convert him to centre back...

Don't think he is aggressive enough and lacks speed.

I'm not bothered about his last season. He's 33. Do people really want us to make the same mistakes as we did with Rio and Vidic? Replace them when they gone.

I'm reading through the thread now and I can't believe people are writing him off even though they haven't seen him play, it's madness.

I have a feeling he's going to be great for us.

Seems like people aren't even sure what exactly he is. From some of the things I've seen, he seems to have spent more time so far as a No.10 than as an actual CM?

Who wasn't? Carrick definitely had his issues but I think the bigger problem, in the middle anyway was that he hit a bad spell of form and there was literally no one else who could step up. That for me has been a problem for years that we've just been fortunate hasn't happened before. If Carrick doesn't perform we have no midfield. He shouldn't have to bare all the burden. Like I said he definitely was below par but the fact that he has to do everything there more or less is a much bigger problem. Having someone who can actually take some responsibility in the midfield will help a lot, just a shame it didn't happen last year as he might have gone to the WC then.

Does Barney actually watch Spanish football, though? I've been pretty frustrated with our own deals too by the way, Lallana would be a tragic signing...so this isn't "Liverpool good, Man utd bad".

Translation: Herrera is in Manchester. Arrived in afternoon from a private jet.

The reporter is of Cadena who first broke the story.

Pirlo is 35, Xavi is 34 and they were starters for their teams. If we sign a better DM, then obviously he'll play instead of Carrick, but Carrick is still a top quality player that is good enough to start for us. Definitely not a priority to replace him.

We can't even agree on the definition of a #10

It's hysterical, especially as I have seen him play.

Even more bizarre is the willingness to ignore the pieces written about him by the likes of Hunter and Ballague. Especially as I chance most people get their views on La Liga players from the press and don't watch it often...
