Ander Herrera is a Manchester United Player!

Meh, we could have done better. Let's hope he can do better than Anderson.

I do remember that someone posted a stat of his ability that I taught was actually noteworthy. So, I will draw hope from that and the time he performed well versus United

Surely Carvalho would have been better value at 28 million? I haven't seen much of Herrera but the general consensus in Spain seems to be that we're grossly overpaying for the player.

I'd prefer Herrera over Carvalho. I've seen more of Herrera admittedly, and only bits of Carvalho, but Herrera has had a very good season, and played a big role in getting Athletic into the Champions League. He's tenacious and direct, but with bags of technical ability. If he could add goals to his game, he would be very complete. He's got a wicked strike on him, so hopefully he can work on that.

So a player who has been good 1 season in Liga Sagres, worth more than a player who has been good 3 season in Liga BBVA ?
Someone like Gareth Barry has had 6 good seasons in the premier league but would that make him a better signing than someone like Ross Barkley?

Touted by who? He's not even on the fringes of the squad, never mind mainstay.

Ballbag, Graham Hunter both say he is very good, very underrated for the work he gets through and does for the team. Take it you aren't impressed with this signing?

Not about the league they play in but the talent and qualities the player possess. Besides Carvalho pretty much bossed the USA game the minute he got on the pitch on his first world cup game. He clearly isn't fazed by the big occasion. From what i've been told Herrera will provide plenty of energy and urgency in midfield and i would be estatic if we can sign a top midfielder along with Herrera but if he is as big as we go in the midfield department it would be very disappointing.

League aside Herrera's a more proven player than Carvalho anyway so that point still stands, Carvalho did boss the USA game, as he has done most games this season but there's a big jump in going from playing in Sporting's midfield to United's. Not to mention that nothing says it's one or the other, who says we won't go out and still sign Carvalho? That aside, if we want a player to come in now and make an instant impact and difference to our midfield, Herrera's the one more likely to do that. No doubt those two together would be a brilliant midfield and would improve us considerably but it seems as if interest in Carvalho dropped once Moyes was sent packing so if we're looking for one now, Herrera's the better option.

For us ? Yes because Mata is better than Ross Barkley.

And Herrera was a serious target for Barcelona but a too expensive one, he is a good player for a big team, obvioulsy 30m is too much he worth around 22m, but you can't negociate with Bilbao.

I really have no idea. Van Gaal is a 'system' manager the same way Fergie was. No need for the massive, glamour names just get the right players in the right roles and improve as a collective.

Herrera will become an important cog without being a highlight reel player. I'm happy with that personally.
Totally agree with this.

Ah man, Herrera's a great wee player. He'll be wicked for us i feel. Have you not checked out his youtubes? ;)

I doubt he'll be the only CM coming in too. My guess is atleast another 2. Ideally, i'd love another 3 or 4 CM's to be honest. I dont have any faith in what we have at the moment & its a squad game now, and our CM squad is absolute pish - i dont see that changin much with Van Gaal coaching them. A shit is still a shit no matter how much how try to polish it!

Oh alight then. As long as he's not the only CM we sign. :)

The point being - one is a proven commodity at the highest level (was exceptional vs Madrid and Barcelona this past season) while the other is still an inexperienced albeit talented player that might very well end up being a high priced bust. We've signed a lot of projects in recent memory that haven't exactly progressed in congruence with their potential - Nani, Anderson, Zaha (too early to judge though) etc and the management has been criticized in some circles for not buying enough players in the prime of their career. We need someone who can come in an plug at it straightaway - much like Carrick, Evra or van der Sar who provided an assured calming influence. Now before you suggest we signed experienced guys in Young, Fellaini (again early days) etc that were "proven" - there's a wide gulf in quality between them and Herrera who will be just 25 at the start of next season, is a quality player and veteran despite his relatively young age (less than 3 years older than Carvalho).

is anyone in the same boat as me, who basically has never seen this guy play?

yes I saw the Europa games, but only remember us getting utterly outplayed rather than any specific players.

It isn't a one or the other situation afaik, so it's not like we won't go other targets once this is done.

Ignore it mate, the ABU fans on here have been trying all day to put this signing down. They're desperate to see us flop again, and wont admit it if we have a good Summer.

Agreed and I would also add that now is not exactly the time for high priced projects. You indulge in projects when you do not have serious pressing issues in the first eleven.

I get the impression Hunter and Ballbag are desperate for more Spain-to-England success stories so hype up any potential transfer of that kind.

What they say isn't too far off though. Personally, I think he's a good player and would definitely add to Man Utd's midfield. That's a huge price for him though, I don't see how you can justify spending it (even though I'm aware it's impossible to pay less when dealing with Athletic Club). I also think that Ander on his own doesn't solve all your midfield problems which isn't ideal given how much of your budget will be used on him.

Wasn't he on standby for Spain?

Nah, his team mate Iturraspe was.

As opposed to the 29 year old Fernandino, who was an absolute bedrock of the Brazil team when you signed him, with his massive 4 caps.

I guess he was shit too?

Assuming we play 433, would Herrera be the attacking player of the middle 3?

If so, where would that leave Mata? Or Kagawa for that matter?

I am excited about this signing, but if Ballbag and Hunter say he is good then he is probably crap.

You lot paid £34 million for a 29 year old with just 4 caps last season
