Ander Herrera is a Manchester United Player!

I'll be satisfied if we get another MF to go along with Herrera. He alone won't be enough to solve our problems. It's a pity Vidal isn't realistic because he along with Ander and Mata as the No. 10 would be perfect.

Ah I see, I thought with him just turning 25 in August we'd be signing him to a 5 year contract.

We can always extend it but I think its club policy to offer one year contracts to anyone over 30, so we likely offer him another long term deal when he turns 29 and the current deal expires!

Many of the comments in the comments sections of the Spanish sports sites say that he is shit and is not worth what United paid.

I don't watch Spanish football, so I don't know. Are these comments accurate?

I just read through the first 3 pages of comments on Marca (Spanish version) and the comments are overwhelmingly positive. More than one Barca fan saying they wanted him as their replacement for Xavi. Lots of people saying he'll develop into one of the best midfielders out there. many more lamenting that such a good player is leaving the league. The only reservations are regarding the fee. Saying it is too much. But they are also saying Koke is over priced etc.

I don't care how much he cost.

I hope this breaks down. Surely for this kind of money we can get someone better than "better than Fellaini & Cleverley."

But he'd come back after his lengthly ban to bang Liverpool up the league. Keep it an international ban so he can still be sold this summer

I dunno I don't think they have a chance of doing well in CL and qualifying again next season without him and they won't be able to invest that much without having the funds from his sale. Would be a massive blow to them and that's even if he then wants to come back for them after. Gonna get so much stick if he stays given his retribution comments and the fact he did it again.

Regarding Herrera it's a good start. I'd have liked it more if he'd been playing a bit deeper more last season but from when I have seen him I think he'll still be good there anyway. Hopefully this is just the start of the transfers for us.

He's one of the best central midfielders in La Liga. Isn't that good enough?

Have you actually watched him play?

Who are you suggesting we get for 33 million?

My god, some people play football manager too much. They would want some big name to come just because its a big name. We're finally buying a mid and some people are against it.

Does not appear a special player, and this is a huge fee. I prefer a younger talent we can help develop into an exceptional talent. However, he is nearly the precise age as Carrick was (24 and soon turning 25) when we signed him, and if he improves to an extent similar to Carrick did at United, then it should be a fine signing.

You must be joking if you think he is not a special player.

The "could this day get any better?" posts:

Surarez probably banned from the World Cup and possibly facing a lengthy ban from football - is that even better still?

Could you imagine if he got a worldwide ban and Liverpool couldn't play him and couldn't sell him either.

Its a clinker of a day thats for sure

Suarez got a ban of 10 matches 2 seasons ago - which ran into the start of last season, and this is the 3rd time he's bitten someone on the field, so his ban will most likely be world-wide given his previous & i think its gonna be months instead of matches. Cantona got 9 months for kickin a fan - Suarez has bitten a fellow footballer 3 times now on separate occasions.

What Suarez has done is even worse than what Cantona did in one isolated incident, in my opinion.. If you got bitten by a junkie you'd be shitting yourself. Not sayin Suarez is a junkie of course, but its a serious medical issue if blood is drawn. Chellini will most certainly be havin tests & shots at the hospital thats for sure..

I've seen him play, not a lot, but more than 5 games, and every time I've been underwhelmed.

Rakitic, Fabregas.
So both players who went to Champions Leagues clubs?

This is a the problem with this forum, we are in for a promising midfielder, easily better than what we have, but he isn't "world class" so let's continue playing Fletcher and Carrick.

 I'm not anti Scottish I just never wanted Moyes. And I dont mind Herrera but was hoping for Vidal.

You know I'm only joking .

I'm really pleased that we've secured (almost) Ander, but like you in many ways, I hope we also bring in a strong defensive midfielder. But it all comes down to how van Gaal wants to use him - we might be missing something about his abilities. For all we know he might secretly be the world's best goalkeeper.

Isn't the fee 28.8M? That's only 1.3M more than we paid for Fellaini and 0.8M more than we paid for Veron.

In today's terms, where transfer fees are preposterous, I think the fee is fine. Bottom line is that ALL players are overpriced now and in a summer where we really need new blood, we are definitely going to be paying over the odds. Fact is, I'm delighted we've signed him. Fee doesn't matter a jot. It's not our money and we apparently have plenty of it. All that matters this summer is accumulation of top talent in weak positions.

I am afraid Mata doesn't fit Van Gaal system. I see no place for him in the starting eleven if he uses the current Dutch system here.

One positive is that Mata can be key to his direct football philosophy.

I have noticed his teams press other teams only if necessary. Otherwise the players just block the gaps on the field. I did notice it with his Bayern too.
Mata couldn't play the role Sneijder does then? Despite being better than Sneijder?

Well, I don't think people are against us signing a midfielder, more questioning whether or not he's one of the better choices for that position. I think he is, we've been missing aggression, mobility and a combative streak in midfield even more than we've been lacking creativity IMO - Carrick is at least capable of playing a cutting through ball every so often even if his strength has always been tidy short passes and long passes to the wing rather than incisiveness.

Juan Mata is perfect for the most advanced role in a midfield three. Play him ahead of Herrera and Carrick (or a new signing in that mould) and we'll be laughing.
A more mobile defensive mid player instead of Carrick would make it even better. :)

no. bilbao are in the champions league and have played well against teams like barca and madrid last season. i made it a point to watch those games and i felt herrera played a big role in those games. he isnt suited to the spanish game (like fabregas), maybe thats why he isnt appreciated as much.

Barca fans would disagree with that man. Feckin disgraceful the booing Fabregas got from his own fans - on many occasions too i might add..

People want a marquee name and right now it seems we cant exactly pick and there arent so many names around who would join us. I mean people are not satisfied with this signing cause its not a name big enough.

That was what fellaini was supposedly meant to give us, look at where that got us, I am kind of sick of hearing about it. One of the best midfields of all times Barcelona's 09-13 team, did not have aggressive destroyers.

Busquets? Yaya in 2009?

He's a fecking quality midfielder with at least 10 years left in the tank. Would be an excellent signing.

Bunch of moany cnuts.

I dislike Pool and Suarez as much as many, but assaulting a fan is worse than assaulting a player!

However, he'll cop big for this if the biggest bottle job ever doesn't go down.

However, I fear it'll be an international only ban. Say 8-10 Uruguay games.

Yeah but this guy can actually move around without barging people to the floor pointlessly and play a few decent passes to boot.
