Ander Herrera is a Manchester United Player!

So Balague seems to think he is good as a no 10 and a central mid. Is this true for people who watched him regularly? That combo of a central midfielder who can play as a no 10 as well seems rather good.
Whenever I've seen him play he's looked like a CM who is playing as a number 10. Doesn't have a particularly great shot on him but he can certainly spot a pass. If he had a real goal threat I'd probably say he's better off more advanced up the pitch.

He's a workhorse though, I think that alone will see him do well as a CM along with his other qualities.

With the recent national team failings, if he can do well with United he may well get himself into the set up too.

Anyone else a bit worried by this? Strange how our targets haven't changed a year on, especiallyones which aren't particularly overwhelming..

Energetic, good tackler, more like a pass and run kind of player, raises his game in important matches... Also speaks English and comes from a family with long football roots.

It would be amazing if we could get him, pretty much everything we need right now.

Supposedly a bit of a leader too, future captain material according to Hunter.

That's the impossible question really. In terms of the position he's been playing for Athletic, he's an attacking midfielder with 5 goals / 5 assists - so, I guess that rates him as solid rather than great and in any case, that's probably not the role we would want him to play.

In terms of attributes, skills and temperament, he looks more like a classic (English style!) box to box player, with just enough aggression to deliver in hard games and big games. I've seen him compared to Gerrard (though minus the shooting skills). Somebody in this thread described him as a better Cleverley, which I'd be happy about because I actually liked the Cleverley who broke into the United team.

So it's one of those questions that only a real scout or a real coach can answer. He's good, but is he good for the way United want to play? If LvG says so, I'll be delighted.
Cheers lads, sounds promising. We certainly need to add more in midfield as well as Herrera, plus clearing some out.

I'm pretty sure we scout our targets for several years at least, before we usually make a move. Probably LVG was given the reports we have on players and decided he likes Ander?

I think that's likely.

Never watched him, never seen him play... What kind of player is he? Worth the money? Various scouting reports are not that encouraging.

So are the 3 men in suits who thought were representing United last time but in reality weren't, involved this time??

Ok, I'm convinced to the point that I can start watching sexy YouTube videos of him now.

Daily Mail pulling out a 50k figure for his wages...perhaps a reason why there are few issues with meeting the release clause this time, rather than pissing about.

He's played nearer the striker in a more advanced role quite a bit in the last season, but he's a centre midfielder. And a very hard working one.

A bit scrappier than the current/new breed of Spanish midfielder and less secure and consistent with his passing, but still typically quick-thinking on and off the ball. Extremely athletic and intense when trying to win the ball back.

Not one who can control the game on his own, so hopefully if he comes, so does someone else. Also not the calmest or most natural in front of goal.
But he'd still improve us on his own just because he'd be the only midfielder we have who can run past someone, pass forward with one touch, and he'd be our most energetic and best tackler.

Mata and Kagawa would have someone form deep who thinks as quickly as them, plays one-twos, trusts his team-mates enough to give them the ball in tight spaces, and he can play those long passes like Alex Song used to play to Van Persie.

Could it really be happening this time...

OK - well the "done deal" story emerged last night, more or less simultaneously from a bunch of journalists who cover Athletic. Someone in the club thinks it's happening at the release clause valuation without the formal release clause being used.

Are they right? Well last August Athletic thought we were going to return with another offer and we never did. So maybe we shouldn't believe it until they smuggle him into Carrington.

Personally, I think it's happening. The language of the reporters covering Athletic has been shifting during the week from words like "expecting" "waiting" "believe" into a deal having been made. Vamos a ver!

That's good enough for me! All is fine now!

Can someone tell us what this guy is like?

Take my summary with a pinch of salt, but he's more of a box to box. Can do a bit of everything - tackle, pass, killer passes, shoot, assist etc but most importantly, he's used to a high pressing game (both attacking and defending) and he's very good at keeping the ball under pressure.

He'll compliment Carrick/Strootman type players really well.

Think of Fabregas when he played deeper at Arsenal. Not at that level but he's got immense potential to get there.

We'll be pretty stocked in this attacking midfielder position with Herrera, Mata, Kagawa and possibly Rooney. A lot of quality there which is promising.

Might well have been aware of him anyway. Plus Herrera did star under Bielsa, someone whose approach is quite comparable to LVG's. I'd imagine it wasn't hard for LVG to see how Herrera would fit into his team.

Don't forget that apparently LvG ruled out going for Fabregas because he didn't think he was the right player for us.

If he decides that Herrera is, then am happy to trust his opinion.

This is what it should always come down to. van Gaal has done more than enough in his career for us to trust his vision for the squad. Even though Herrera is already a decent player, van Gaal may have an idea on how to get more out of him that the rest of us are missing.

Exactly my feelings in terms of his attacking prowess. Not some one who will score loads but seems like one who provides little passes that makes the difference. Did not know about his workhorse reputation, will suit LVG.

This is the first time I see it mentioned this way from where I'm coming from. Well, it already does sound dirty from first look and I just wanna double confirm it as the deal looks more likely to be done than not. Wonder how is he going to get away with his rubs.

Awesome. With Spain bound to undergo a big change soon we might be signing a soon to be midfield regular for them - he will definitely get his chance and with him, de Gea and Mata we could have 3/11 of one of the best teams in the world in the coming years. We must have scouted him pretty thoroughly as also showed interest last year so our interest could have well preceeded even Moyes.

Very happy with this transfer. If we follow it with a left back (still think it doesn't have to be £34m Shaw) and a flair player (could well be Alexis Sanchez) we will be in good position to challenge.

On the BBC website too:

Ander Herrera: Man Utd set to sign Athletic Bilbao midfielder
By Simon Stone BBC Sport
Manchester United are close to completing a deal to sign midfielder Ander Herrera from Athletic Bilbao.

The Old Trafford club failed in an attempt to buy Herrera, 24, on transfer deadline day last summer.

New United boss Louis van Gaal has revived the transfer, which could be completed as early as Tuesday.

Herrera, part of Spain's Olympic squad in 2012, would become Van Gaal's first signing since he replaced David Moyes as manager.

More to follow.

Are you kidding?

There really is no pleasing some fans.

We could sign schweinsteiger, Kroos and Ronaldo, and there'd still be complaints.

Schweinsteiger is too old. Kroos is very ordinary and a Bayern reject. Ronaldo is overrated. I'd rather have Messi.
