Ander Herrera is a Manchester United Player!

Valencia has extended his deal for 3 years. Am not saying that this is the answer, but it might mean that this is not an area we are prioritising - especially if Nani is being given some time to prove himself.
Let's hope they step it up then, because I really think we need at least 1 class winger along with the huge hole that needs plugging in midfield if we even want top 4. Both of them would be beasts as squad players and would give us really good squad depth, but I think if we rely on them all season, we're in for a ride of the bad kind.

So despite being linked with almost every midfield player on the planet this summer it looks very much like we may be signing one of the ones the press has hardly mentioned  How's that Kroos deal coming along?

Nice to see the club abandon last summers policy of having Ed dancing round outside rival grounds dressed as a jester in the hope of enticing players to Utd.

Honorable mention, in terms of comic value, goes to reading people debate the talent of a player most of them have quite obviously barely seen kick a ball.

Don't forget that apparently LvG ruled out going for Fabregas because he didn't think he was the right player for us.

If he decides that Herrera is, then am happy to trust his opinion.
Van Gaal's systems don't require world beaters in every position, like you I trust his judgement to sign the right players for us.

Cheers. A Spanish midfielder without a senior international cap is a different proposition.

Mobile, energetic, solid technique, quite tidy and isn't afraid to get a foot in. He's more or less exactly what our midfield needs in terms of attributes. I don't think he's particularly special or anything, but I don't think our midfield necessarily needs that. More than anything it needs balance. With Mata at #10, the likes of Herrera and Strootman, players we're being linked to, fit our needs.

Shaw and Herrera would certainly be a nice (if very overpriced) start to our transfer window. At 18 and 24 they'd be long term fixtures in positions that are currently problem areas for the team. If we can get these deals wrapped up relatively soon then suddenly our summer takes on a much more positive hue...

Indeed. If we get them two we will have had a good window in terms of long-term strengthening and I'd feel a lot better about all of these stopgapesque names being thrown around.

Can someone tell us what this guy is like?

played as a no. 10 most of the time 26/31 games. Was without scorer point until matchday 19. Then 5 goals and 5 assists but all against teams lower in the table than Athletic.

Passing accuracy around 80 %. Does contribute defensively quite well. 1.6 key passes per game isn't bad. Rather short passer than long balls.

Received 7 yellows

I am not sure if we will be happy if we consider him a good CM when he excelled as a no. 10. The season before he was mainly aployed as CM and had 1 goal and 1 assist in 29 games. It is not the main focus for a CM to score but I wonder if we are going to make the same mistake as with Failaini, buying him for a different job than he is doing at his current club.

That's the impossible question really. In terms of the position he's been playing for Athletic, he's an attacking midfielder with 5 goals / 5 assists - so, I guess that rates him as solid rather than great and in any case, that's probably not the role we would want him to play.

In terms of attributes, skills and temperament, he looks more like a classic (English style!) box to box player, with just enough aggression to deliver in hard games and big games. I've seen him compared to Gerrard (though minus the shooting skills). Somebody in this thread described him as a better Cleverley, which I'd be happy about because I actually liked the Cleverley who broke into the United team.

So it's one of those questions that only a real scout or a real coach can answer. He's good, but is he good for the way United want to play? If LvG says so, I'll be delighted.

Indeed.

Ballbag has weighed in.

He says: Manchester United will pay the 36m buy out clause of Ander Herrera (1st July he would have cost 40m). 2nd time round, Utd will get his man

Apologies if already posted, but it's appearing on the Daily Mail breaking news ticker at the top of their sports page now:

Ander Herrera's £28.4million move to Manchester United will be announced today.

When do these 'announced today' reports ever turn out to be true? can anybody think of a single example actually?

You do realise there is quite a difference between a #10 and an attacking midfielder? These days, any midfielder that just happens to be released further up the field is suddenly branded as an 'in the hole' player, when really, they're anything but.

Whatever happened to just being a central midfielder, attacking and defending all in one? Herrera may play that little bit further forward in the Bilbao set up, but his skillset is nothing like that of Mata or Kagawa's, and certainly translates itself well into a role within a 433, which we could well be playing come September.

De Gea was the same when we signed him and Koke has only just made his debut. when you look at that Spanish midfield over the last few years - there are a ton of players who have sat on the sidelines, doesn't mean they are not good players.

If this goes through i doubt it as anything to do with LVG.
Maybe it does have something to do with him though. It was reported last year we weren't willing to match the buyout, so if all of a sudden we are, then surely LvG has given the go ahead?

Sorry for asking, what does that suppose to mean?
It means that if we do indeed sign Herrera the poster you quoted will masturbate at his desk at work and let everyone watch him while he does it.

"Rub one out" is a rather endearing term for masturbation. Get it? He would quite literally be rubbing himself until he lets a load out.

When you put it into pounds the price seems a bit fairer. It's still above his real value but it's irrelevant to us.

It might be Fabregas money, but the situation isn't comparable. It's more of a Fernandinho or Matic situation.

I don't believe that for a second. He might have been a long-standing United target, but I'm willing to bet Van Gaal has seen the player and read the scout reports.

Yep - although I think Valencia is a better option as a squad player than Nani. Nani is far more talented, but to get the most out of him I think he needs to play every game - he seems to be the type of player who thrives when confident. Valencia is more likely to be able to be brought on as sub or started for single games and able to do a job and be relied upon.

I am a big fan of Nani - as frustrating as he is. Wingers are never going to be the most consistent players in general because they offer a high risk / high reward proposition. Would love to see if Nani can thrive under LvG.

So Balague seems to think he is good as a no 10 and a central mid. Is this true for people who watched him regularly? That combo of a central midfielder who can play as a no 10 as well seems rather good.

Edit: Rather a midfielder who can play as no 10 than the other way around.

Graham Hunter thinks he's the right cm for us too, seems to rate him highly.

BBC are reporting it too now.

If we sign Herrera ill rub one out at my desk in work with everyone watching.

Sorry for asking, what does that suppose to mean?

Do you want Weaste to educate you via PM? I can arrange it.

I think he'll need video examples.

:lol::lol::lol:

Even if we don't sign him these posts make the news worthwhile

With posters like @Blair and @Drifter, I reckon the newbs get a raw deal. The "old" group aren't that good either.

Energetic, good tackler, more like a pass and run kind of player, raises his game in important matches... Also speaks English and comes from a family with long football roots.

It would be amazing if we could get him, pretty much everything we need right now.

If Balague is reporting it then there is more chance it is bollox. What an absolute tool.

In all honesty, I hope this one goes through. Not only because I rate him as a solid, promising footballer, but also because how badly we fecked him over last summer. That was a mess and something the club should be very ashamed over.

Come, get it down.
