I still believe that Herrera is a good option for us in January/Summer. He's got all the facets to his game that are required by us and I think he'd tick a few boxes at once. Tackling, dribbling, creativity etc. He's got the lot, in my opinion.

I can't think of any midfielders as suitable that are available right now. Barkley and Morrison I would take, but that'd be with a view to the future.

I think Herrera's game is slightly different to the other two you mentioned. In fact, within the context of a future midfield 3, I would be happy with Herrera plus one of the other two you mentioned.

The manager has little say in these things; it's usually the President's decision.

Squad is the managers' though. If he reckons he doesn't need someone and particularly if he reckons the money could be better used investing elsewhere the President will listen.

Effectively, the President protects the manager and the squad with his stance to outsiders, but if the request comes from the manager it's a different cup of tea.

Yeah they're all different players, but I think they could all come in at some point and do a job. Different jobs, granted, but three potentially top quality players that we could look at. If we saw Giggs retire and Anderson leave, along with Carrick passing his peak in the next two years, I wouldn't mind seeing all three come in over the next few years.

What a midfield three it could potentially be

For the immediate future, Herrera would be a good option I feel.

I think we should get him in January.

Made the most passes last night despite not playing that deep in midfield. Doesn't always catch the eye but is quietly effective, always involved, makes himself available, brings a good energy and tempo to the game, has a good range of passing, likes a tackle, intercepts the ball well and always goes for it in his 50/50s. We could use him box to box imo because he doesn't neglect his defensive duties and has a decent penetrative pass in the attacking third as well.

Yes the €36m release clause might be a bit more than he's actually worth, but he would be a good addition for many years imo. Infinitely better than Fellaini, although that's not exactly hard.

I could see us using Herrera-Carrick or even Herrera-Cleverley in a CM two with options to mix it up in a midfield three with Carrick and Kagawa/Cleverley.

Athletic wont sell below the release clause, Woody has already said our valuation isnt that high so dont see it happening.

Even if we did want him in January there's no guarantee we will get him if he is for sale with teams like Monaco etc that could be sniffing around

What???? Lets just drop in PSG, Chelsea, City and Madrid!! When has Monaco been interested.

You may throw Fellaini into the mix there, because whether you like it or not he's here and he'll play, so any midfielder we sign will be signed with a view to playing with Fellaini somewhere down the line.

Carrick's backup as the man protecting the defence in a three. Yes, I know.

He seems to always know where to pass the ball before he gets it. Must've learnt that from Scholes. Problem with Herrera is because he's got a baby face you think he's a weakling.

Why couldn't we just get this deal done?

I can see why we didn't want to pay 35 million for him. He's just plain average. But then we bought Fellaini...

From what I've read, that seems to have happened right after we publicly went after him. So I'd guess he lost his focus a bit. Not surprising given the messing around on deadline day.

Is he just playing badly and been dropped or is he getting the Llorente treatment?

To be fair he didn't look that great in that video, and his opponents were very average (Elche are very average, right?).

Not a single player on that video looks good. All it shows is he is comfortable on the ball and willing to move around dictating play much like Scholes used to, but it's a very por game from him overall.

It's hard to see what the fuss is about. He's got an 80% completion rate on fewer than 40 passes a game, he's not got particularly good tackle or interception stats, and he doesn't score. Even if you eliminate the inaccessible - Vidal, Pogba, Tiago, Ramsey, Pjanic, Mkhitaryan, Toure, etc. - there's still a ton of better players that might be available. Start with Rakitic and Sertic and work your way down.

Manchester United may have dodged a bullet when missing out on £36million Ander Herrera

After a rain-soaked first half at the new San Mames on Saturday left Athletic Bilbao trailing 1-0 to Levante, the stage was set forAnder Herrerato come on and turn the game.
Athletic coach Ernesto Valverde had preferred to partner summer signing Beñat and Ander Iturraspe in midfield, but as he watched his side grow increasingly frustrated as they were thwarted by an organised opponent, it was clear that the manager was ready to ring the changes.
At the start of the second half the substitute board signaled two replacements to the sound of welcoming cheers from an impatient home crowd. The first saw the impish Iker Muniain make way for striker Aritz Aduriz, the second brought a close to Beñat's contribution with Mikel Rico introduced in his place.
Ander remained on the bench. It was the story of his season so far, overlooked not once, but twice as Valverde maintained his sparing use of Manchester United's £30million summer transfer target.
"I don't know if he has a less important role this year," said Valverde recently of a player he has awarded just one full 90 minutes this year. That Ander has remained an unused substitute in three of high-flying Athletic's last five fixtures certainly supports the argument.
Despite claims that the 24-year-old could be the player to reinvigorate United's midfield following talk of a deadline-day bid in September, it is clear that he is not the panacea many had hoped as a move to Old Trafford appeared imminent....

I genuinely don't think he's been playing poorly in the games I've watched him in this season, though he's played higher up the pitch. I think they're possibly freezing him out and I'd still have him here.

Can you still request for a buyout clause on a player that doesn't play? I know this chairman is stern but that would be a little much. I'd have him for our orginal offer.

Why would the buyout clause come into it? We never wanted to pay the buyout clause as he wasn't worth anything like that. We'd just make an offer of 15 million, or whatever his infrequent performances indicate he is worth now.

We did nothing wrong. Woodward clarified the whole incident in his interview with UWS. It sounded fair enough to me.

Yeah we pulled out long before deadline day. United didn't value him at his buyout clause, and Bilbao wouldn't budge on it.

Link to interview?

No link as you'd have to get the magazine subscription.
Here's the part where he discusses Herrera though. The rest of the interview is also great, he comes across as a genuinely nice guy.

I spoke to people very close to the deal on deadline day and they felt the deal could be done. They’re not timewasters. I think people wanted it to be done. The truth is quite boring. We’ve tracked him for nearly three years. He’s got a lot of big pluses. He comes from a footballing family, his father was a top player and a sporting director, he speaks perfect English. The decision to put Ander on the list was a very late one. We knew a lot about him because we’d been analysing him for more than two years. We had a figure in our minds about what he was worth. I know the president at Bilbao and put a bid in. He very courteously said “no”. I tried to work a few other angles. They’re opening a new stadium and we did a deal before with (the club from which we signed) Chicharito, where we played a game in their new stadium. They said: “Look, we appreciate your interest, but he’s the most important player on our team.” Given that they can only take players from a limited Basque pool, they wanted to keep him. Once they said to us: “Only the buy clause being met will issue a release”, we knew it wasn’t going to happen. Our rating of his value wasn’t the buy-out clause.

I dunno, I'd say it's more likely his head was completely turned by it all. Didn't some Spanish journo at the time say Herrera was so sure he was off to United he had already said goodbye to some of the staff at the training ground, or have I imagined that?
