Honestly if we can get him in his POTY 16-17 form, Matic doing what he's been doing all this season, and Pogba out of his winter funk, we will have a very good midfield indeed. On paper they are beautifully balanced. And at one point or another over the last two seasons they have each looked like the best midfielder in the league.

Best player in the first half (Zero competition) and had an excellent game overall. If we buy another midfielder or two in the summer then I don't think we'll see much of a midfield three with him, Pogba and Matic but if he wants to stay and fight for his place then fair enough.

yes, he's not been at his best this season, but i always get the impression with him that with an extended run in the team, he'll sort himself out and make us better long term. he's a very intelligent player, tenacious, capable of quick 1-2 football, and he gets under opponents skins. he's also very disciplined in the sense that if the manager tells him to stick to someone for 90 minutes, he'll do just that.
he's got the whole nani thing about him that despite being extremely good for us in several occasions, if he has a bad game, managers just seem to relegate him to the bench for extended periods of time and he doesn't get a chance after being out of the team for so long which then impacts their performance negatively when they do get a chance, and then they get relegated to the bench for long periods again. the cycle.

To be fair there was beer and elbows everywhere during the goal and replays and these white guys all look the same to me.
He is a class player. Apart from his tenacity, passion, defensive contribution and big game perfomances, he is very intelligent. His assists against Chelsea and Spurs last season and City today show that quality.
It is strange that this midfield didn't work for us before then we play one of the best teams in the world away from home and play an even game in midfield. I think it was just a coincidence and run of bad form of the whole team which resulted in the midfield of the three not working. Like someone said - on a paper the three are really well balanced and possibly one of the best midfields in the league. Just needs to settle.
We simply missed Herrera, too often we were not under control of the midfield and it will never be Mourinho's style but United need a stronger midfield and Herrera should be part of that. We need someone do the running, kicking, winning the ball, Matic and Pogba excell at some things but are hardly dynamic enough to play at the high tempo and the Spaniard is really intelligent and quick with his thinking. It usually gets unnoticed but while Pogba and Matic likes to spend too much time on the ball, he in tight situations keep it simple and makesus move the ball quicker but also is capable to release a great through ball with no time to think about it. He showed his quick thinking today with a brilliant assist.
Not talking about his fighting spirit and annoying the opposition team, that's absolutely invaluable. Saying all of this, lazy to google it but he hasn't started a full game for about 2 months or so that was an amazing performance and some question marks that he was one of the few in the poor first half who was at United level. I think Matic for instance had a shocking first half. But that's okay it's a team game and noone is flawless . Kudos to Herrera for such a great comeback. Let's build on that form now

Poor Fellaini. He was Mr World Class chest control. Now Herrera is better than him at that too.
Am I the only one who notices Hererra's ability to win headers ? He actually does it better than Pogba and Matic despite the height disadvantage

He's such a great guy to have in the squad and not sure why he hasn't played much this year but that was a good return to form. He's annoying as feck for the opposition and raises his game in the big matches. Hope next year with Fellaini feckin off we get to see more of Ander.
He has been injured a lot and been out of form as well if rumours of us targeting couple of midfielders are true and if we go midfield 3 full time next season his game time would again be similar , him used as rotation option for resting first teamers occasionally and chances are we won't see him much in big games either depending on how new signings fare.

Yeah I don't expect him to return to starter but just to be trusted and made to feel useful again will be a start. With Fellaini you always felt Jose wouldn't hesitate to stick him in or bring him off the bench which hasn't been the same case for Ander. If he accepts being a squad player he needs to show Jose he can be trusted to make impact off the bench.
We need him in the team, he’s our current Evra, Neville or even Keane, the player with the mentality and character to push us on through more than just his footballing ability.
He creates angles for our defenders to pass to better than anyone else in our squad, just a shame they don’t have the confidence/ability to play half those passes.

Agreed hopefully with Fellaini gone Jose would show more faith in Herrera and equally Herrera readily accept his squad role for our sake because I think it's too early to rely on Mctominay , Pereira or Fosu-Mensah as our midfield backups because I can't see us making more than 4 signings this summer.
Thought he was our best CM, played really well in both halves even on the first when we were getting overrun.

His best performance in ages, and even if he hadn't performed so well I still wouldn't want him sold. His attitude is top notch.
That alone should trigger new contract talks.
