Yeah he was good today.

Still need a replacement or adequate competition in the summer though.

You can see why Jose has gone with a 4-2-3-1 with Herrera and Pogba as the double pivot. Herrera has been massive against lower-level teams like Watford in winning the ball quickly and sustaining pressure, and this allows us to have an extra man on the attack. His performance today was outstanding. The number of times he closed down Watford's attacking players and won the ball was significant for us in not only keeping a clean sheet but in creating the number of chances we did.

Once his intensity lowered in the second half, the whole team's intensity dipped. He really is crucial to our team in the role he plays. It's not only his tenacity, aggression, and reading of the game that helps us out, though. His passing was spectacular this match, and he's really improved from his first season when his passing was sloppier. His through passes stretched Watford constantly and maintained our front 4's threat.

He's my MOTM for sure.

Fantastic. His transfer thread would've been many pages long now if he wasn't a United player.

Anyone got his stats for the game? I'm sure they're very impressive.
7 tackles
89% passing
99 touches
1 dribble

According to Whoscored. Will post a Squawka stat-tweet when they have it on their timeline. Unless, @#07 gets there first.

Very good player, great mentality too.

Still think we need at least 1 midfielder in the summer though, not to say Herrera hasn't been good.

MOTM. Bossed that midfield. Took balls off players with ease. Intercepted loads. Stopped everything going through the middle. Always an option for the ball and played a few good balls. Wayward shooting as always but he didn't let Watford play in the midfield.

Should be in the unpopular opinion thread but I wouldn't swap him for any other midfielder in the league. Does the job of 2 players all game.

To add on to the stats above:
7 successful tackles out of 8 attempted
2 interceptions
2 clearances
Was dribbled past only once this whole match (surprising seeing how he can struggle with players facing and dribbling him)
He had the 2nd-most amount of possession in the whole match behind Paul Pogba, an indication of how involved he was in the match.

He was involved everywhere, playing more than just a ball-winner's role à la Kanté.

You all rate him just because he is likeable, nothing to do with many performances like today's this season.

For all the talk of 'upgrading' him and him being overrated, he's precisely the sort of player Mourinho loves, and I can see him being an important player for us for the next few years, or more. A lot depends on whether we decide on whether we are going to utilise a 4-3-3 or a 4-2-3-1 though, as Herrera-Pogba can potentially be found wanting against top sides imo.

Kante is a limited Herrera.
This.

Kante recycle, wins the ball back and has good positioning things which Herrera has(and even stats show that he's been better in those departments this season) but he doesn't quite have Herrera skills as a footballer. Yet he's always seen as this superior player to Ander solely based on what media feed people.

I mean Herrera is simply a better footballer than Kante yet somehow media have fed people a different story and they've bought it.

well to be fair to him, that volley today was very hard to keep down, mhkitaryan who should be considered much better finisher skied few minutes after him much easier volley, his goals will come but when he plays like this hes irreplacable, the second goal came after the tackle he made in the middle of the pitch..

If we end up with him being only a back up eventually we will have the best midfield in the world, and I am expecting him and Pogba up their game a bit too, both players are better at slightlz different roles but thez can do the job right now and we can put an extra attacker in front of them which is always good. No carrick no problem, could have been easily 5:0 with an easy clean sheet

Yup, but we're now seeing what Mourinho's planning to do with our midfield. In games against sides planning to sit back and counter against us, he'll go with this 4-2-3-1 where Herrera will not only win the ball quickly but ensure that we keep possession and enter dangerous attacking areas to continue our attacks.

In bigger matches against teams with better midfields, he'll go with a 4-3-3 with Carrick at the base and Pogba + Herrera flanking him. This will ensure that our midfield can keep pressure on the opponent's midfield whilst not opening up spaces for them to exploit. This will also provide Pogba and Herrera more freedom going forward if they choose to play like they did against Watford as the double pivot.

Why exactly do we want to "upgrade" on Herrera?
Because he doesn't get enough coverage from the media, so he's not a shiny-enough name for some. Wijnaldum himself has been impressive in a similar role, but he also doesn't enough recognition either.

Honestly, the only upgrade I can think of in terms of longevity and ability is Saúl, and I don't see him leaving Atlético Madrid for us.

Why exactly do we want to "upgrade" on Herrera?
Because people want us to be like Madrid. Buying a Galactico for every position and then figuring out how to make the system work

Kante is judged based solely on his ability to recycle the ball, Herrera isn't. Herrera is often criticised for his passing, something Kante is never brought up on.

Seriously though, we need another energetic b2b to rotate \ compete with him, the energy levels he plays with can't be sustained over a season.
