that's a fairly far out comparison in my mind Herrera is the polar opposite to Leiva but maybe my view is being obscured by the rose tinted glasses. Things really are bad when our best player this season is being compared to Lucas.
Not playing styles. Fans opinions and love of him for doing things that are nothing special.
And Mata is our best player this season, by a considerable distance.

We now know he is better with Carrick. Morgan did nothing, not match fit, but generally does nothing. Then Paul going off injured. We are so going to rely on Carrick on Sunday, it is scary.

Not sure he is that great as a DM. He lost his player on one of the counter-attacks yesterday, that big striker they put on. I'm not an analyst, so not sure the frequency he makes such errors. But it could've cost us a goal.
Same with the FK that lead to 2-0, I got the feeling he was in the wrong spot.
On the other hand, he looked great in some other games - notably when the team played better as well.

I wouldn't be calling him shite in his new position all of a sudden, he's been our best player for the majority of matches in this position. Just need to accept it's a new position for him and there will be times like this.

Tbf the arguments for captain still holds even if he plays a sub-par game. I think that has to do with his attempts to conduct the team more than his form of the day. He looks more engaged in what his teammates do than Rooney or Smalling.
I hope he's watching Carrick closely here. This is what he should be trying to model himself on.

He's far too aggressive to ever play like Carrick. We are shoehorning him into that role as he is the only one who can pick out a quick forward pass.
I dont think we're going to be able to replace Carrick unfortunately, just like Carrick was not the replacement for Keane. We just have to spread his qualities out over a couple of players in midfield. We kind of did the opposite when Carrick joined.
jesus christ people here! swansea are doing absolutely nothing, you will compare Herrera who had one of the best midfield displays for united in ages against Liverpool who are top of the league with carrick against absolutely poor Swansea who are just waiting in their own box. Of course Carrick will have a good game, anybody would have a good game there today..

On one side we are happy to say for Rooney, Fellaini, Rojo, Jones and all the unlikeables that it was only Swansea, yet for Carrick we say that he was bossing the midfield. Considering the amount of time Carrick had, anyone could have done a job there today, with all due respect to Carrick who I feel is still a decent squad member for us
Do hope he starts against Arsenal, ideally for Fellaini. Just because of the movement of Arsenals players.
Him or Fellaini in the right centre midfield role against Arsenal will do. Both have their strengths.
I came in to post that, and I find the fact he is playing there jolly disappointing. Shows up the total absence of balance in the squad & doesn't say much for some other players. Herrera has done well there actually but not a long term answer, surely.
I hope Jose isn't holding that red card against him, he should be straight back in against Arsenal, Fellaini is hopeless on the ball and will struggle against their quick, skillfull players, we need Ander with Carrick and Pogba.

Made a suicidal pass in his own half which almost led to England's third goal. Otherwise a pretty non-descript performance. Isco was their best player.

Apart from start off the move for their first goal. If he hadn't played that ball to Morata Spain might have lost. He won the ball back quite a bit. That is what I like, if he does lose the ball he goes straight back and wins it back again. No waving arms about and standing there like a lemon. Also he pissed off Eric Dier so all is good.
