I hope we don't fumble this talent
It seems like hindsight but I've been banging my head against a wall over Amad getting a shot here since Solskjaer dropped him indefinitely after scoring against AC Milan. 2 seasons and £150 million later it's starting to look the club's spent a lot of cash on the wrong position.Hindsight is 20/20, I would still say that there was a need for a right winger, we could have got another player or paid less but I don't think it was a waste to go after one. ETH chose someone he knew well, I mean it worked with Martinez.
It's always going to a gamble using young players though. Some make it from the first minute they step foot on a pitch and others don't.It seems like hindsight but I've been banging my head against a wall over Amad getting a shot here since Solskjaer dropped him indefinitely after scoring against AC Milan. 2 seasons and £150 million later it's starting to look the club's spent a lot of cash on the wrong position.
I think it's become obvious that Sancho isn't a RW. He looks a lot more comfortable on the left. Imagine if we had gone into the season with Amad and Perlistri as our only RW options. Amad was returning from an unsuccessful loan spell at Rangers and Pellistri hadn't even made a first team appearance for us yet. We still had Ronaldo at CF, so that didn't seem as much of a problem position. We had Amad, Sancho and Pellestri for the right wing spot. We shouldn't have been after a new right winger after investing in that position in the previous two windows when the midfield needed a complete rebuild, along with the need for a new striker. You're right though, that blame falls on Murtough too no question.
Personally I don't think we would have signed Casemiro had we signed De Jong, so in that scenario we would've still signed Antony with the Casemiro money. Why do people keep saying this?
We would have got him earlier but for the FDJ chase. That's what held the deal up as Frenkie was going to set us back 100m as well.
I don't think we'd have ever signed both. If we'd have got FDJ I reckon Erik would have made do with the wingers we already had.
I’ve seen as much promise from Sancho on the right as the left in all honesty, which isn’t much. He did well at RW for Dortmund and that’s the position we spent £70 million on him for, so he should be classed as a right winger off of that basis alone. I’d have been more than happy with Amad, Pellestri and Sancho as our right wing options, knowing 80 million would be spent on a striker or deep lying playmaker instead. Amad’s loan wasn’t unsuccessful because he played badly, it’s an important detail.I think it's become obvious that Sancho isn't a RW. He looks a lot more comfortable on the left. It's all about the squad depth next season for me. You got £150m-£200m worth of talent right there. I just hope ten Hag does the right thing and give them more playing time. They've been better than the first team regulars.Garnacho- Pellestri - Amad
Seems a great combination, especially with someone like Kane or Osimhen up top

Sorry, but this is utter nonsense. It's classic captain hindsight stuff. "Martinez was always going to cut it" - are you for real?! This signing was panned by all and sundry, in the media and on here. ten Hag knew better (shock!) having worked with him at Ajax and he's now one of our most important players. He also knows a feck load more about Antony that anyone else, and the idea that he was a 'desperate signing' to appease idiot fans is completely stupid. Pellistri has looked okay in moments, but he's also looked very defensively naïve. No chance he should be playing over Antony. Some of the stuff that is being spouted on here at the moment is unreal.Martinez always was a gritty little fecker that was going to cut it in an aggressive league. Anthony was a show pony who wasn’t particularly great in the Dutch league and who was a desperate signing to appease the fans when we didn’t get FDJ. Sadly I think we have spunked £150m recently on Sancho (pre-ETH), and then Anthony when we had no need when we had a couple of kids who could do the job better. But, these mistakes have been made, it’s how it’s managed going forward that matters. Does ETH persist in playing Anthony or Sancho week in and week out if they are playing gash, or does he take a punt and play Diallo or Pellistri (both of which I‘d start over Anthony or Sancho)?
You can’t win anything with kids. Or can you?
Players are more highly rated when they are less played or less watched on the caf.Sorry, but this is utter nonsense. It's classic captain hindsight stuff. You're my contingency plan if ten Hag gets sacked thenIt's not hindsight though is it. How incompetent would a manager need to be to not forsee that Ronaldos career was coming to an end and Martial may be up to it. Such a bizarre claim.
Can we recall him for this weekend?

Amad wasn't Solskjaer's signing, it came from the scouts. Solskjaer wanted Sancho but ended up with Amad and Pellestri instead. He pretty much refused to use him all season preferring James as Greenwood's back up then signed Sancho the following summer.Means Ole did know what he was doing with recruitment!. But people above him did and do, not.
I’ll let ten Hag knowMy mate is a Sunderland season ticket holder. He said he's been good for them but said he doesn't think he's anywhere near ready for the Premier League.
Neither are Sunderland, you should have told himMy mate is a Sunderland season ticket holder. He said he's been good for them but said he doesn't think he's anywhere near ready for the Premier League.
He did say that as well to be fair .Neither are Sunderland, you should have told him
Kind of is. He made it clear that he wanted De Jong at all costs and we ended up running down a dead end pursuing a player that had no intention of joining us for the entire window until panic set in and we ended up overpaying for all our transfers.Ten Hag wanted Antony at the start of the window when Ajax would've likely accepted less than 60m. It's not his fault Murtough dithered and ended up overpaying for him 2 months later.
Murtoughs job to tell him a deal cant be done and to move on. Obviously Murtough also thought a deal could he done.Kind of is. Your mate is wrong. My mate is a Sunderland season ticket holder. He said he's been good for them but said he doesn't think he's anywhere near ready for the Premier League.
Think it was clear that Ten Hag wanted Ronaldo gone last summer but that we couldn't sell him, and there wasn't a squad place for another striker given we were spending 500k a week on Ronaldo and are spending 275k per week on Martial. Just purely based on squad numbers, you can't do what Chelsea are doing where you just shove them in the 2nd dressing room, anybody would tell the manager to try and make it work in the mean time because we weren't in the position to be able to get rid of them last summer. It's not hindsight though is it. How incompetent would a manager need to be to not forsee that Ronaldos career was coming to an end and Martial may be up to it. Such a bizarre claim.
Do you also blame Mourinho for us failing to sign a CB in the 2018 summer window or would you say the responsibility lies with Ed Woodward?Kind of is. He made it clear that he wanted De Jong at all costs and we ended up running down a dead end pursuing a player that had no intention of joining us for the entire window until panic set in and we ended up overpaying for all our transfers.
The sad part is I agree with this. It raises some worries how little opportunities EtH has given Pellestri despite Antony being bang average. It makes you think the same could happen with Amad. The lad has flourished on loan at Sunderland - will have given him a real steel to his game as well. I’d have him starting in a heart beat over Anthony and Sancho. I don’t want him recalled next season if it means he just sits on the bench all season whilst watching the Brazilian ferris wheel do his tricks on the bye line which result in nothing. I’d rather, esp if Sunderland get promoted, that he stays with them on loan for a season in the PL.
I'll be honest, from what I saw, he didn't do much aside from the goal.
Thought he was very good again, so tidy on the ball, cute little flicks, backheels, one touch passing, so important for Sunderlands quick flowing attacks. And his shot from distance with that left foot is so good.

I remember Garner getting talked up as been ready for the first team after his great season in the Championship last season.

Antony is so much better than people make out on here. The team usually falls apart at around the exact time Antony is subbed off. He definitely has a way to go in terms of knowing when to vary his runs but he's a gritty little fecker and I have to say in terms of problems with the team, he'd be well down the pecking order for me in terms of issues to address.Sorry, but this is utter nonsense.
