All-Time Fantasy Draft

Anto - who would you take from my team should you win? I'm curious

ooooh Ano trying to get shots in early.

Completely disagree. Once I make my tweaks, I'll be fine for the final if I get through.

btw - I did think of your path - spaniard + keeper but decided against it. I reckon if I do beat you and add who I want, I have a real shot.

It willl be a good game.

Btw - I would rather stick to my guns and play with my wingers. If I go out, I go out my way, and I'm fine with that!

No shots, thought we were having an open exchange here. I told you before we even got drawn and say it again, those two are not good enough to win you an all-time draft. It's fine by me if you want to stick to them, but you won't make it.

I have a lot of time for both, one of them is one of my favourite players, but they won't cut it.

Pelé obviously, although he was far down my star wishlist but it's the only game-winning quality I could get from you and play :(. Not clear on the other chap, would decide that after the game subject to who I play next.

I was kidding. Relax. Which one is your favorite?

Other chap? You get to take 2 from me? Damn, now I reckon if I beat you, I have a real shot. I have a plan!!

Pele fits better than Beckenbauer to be honest! We lose our striker with no replacement.

Think an option would be to play Pele up top and get Laudrup on the left of an attacking three, (or Stoichkov?). Stick with Valera in a solid midfield three with Beckenbauer and Neeskens.

With that defence and midfield NM won't be conceeding much at all, and then rely on some inspiration from the front three.

Stoichkov actually fits better I think, probably not as much of a vote winner as Laudrup though.

Can't tell if you are on a wum Iso! Cruyff would lose us Neeskens.

Edit - Did I imagine that post or did you just delete it :wenger:

I deleted it, because I then remembered you had another Dutch already. No wum intended. I thought my game against NM has taught him something that super midfield >> super attack. But we'll see.

It was almost impossible for me to convince people Xavi-Davids didn't and NM has other players chipping in.

No wonder as it was a three of Xavi - Davids - Platini which compares well with any modern three in a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 formation that has any aspirations of controling the centre.

And he has Pelé where you had Platini. Didn't think it was necessary to refer to either though. It was Xavi-Neeskens they mentioned.

And yes, I've said before that three was very good, it's no wonder they've been the ones picked, it was what happened around them (or too close to them) and the passing options (or lack of) which didn't do it for me. Game's over anyway mate.

So you overanalysed everything based on a false premise?

No - I just have a vision for the side. HAve had it since the start. If we can take 2 off each other we will be ok.

That attacking three would look a bit wonky, both Pelé and whichever of your wingers you convert would not look right, but you can try.

Nothing in particular, it looks the business. I can't see that XI set up any better than it is currently.

I never realised the way you kept digging up points of debate that have been well exhausted from the match thread.

 You picked up on a comment I was making on how sellable Xavi-Neeskens could be considering how hard/ineffective it was to argue against Xavi-Davids. They are talking about whether people would buy it, I'm basing a reply on what scant evidence we have of as similar a pair as I've seen tested on the polls.

I wasn't digging up the whole discussion, can't be arsed really.

Agree, that's why I hated drawing you. Tough game AND not much of an improvement out of it. Would have much rather got another side and gone for Ronaldo as first pick. My side was set up for players like him and Messi, less so Maradona or Pelé.

Aye some of the teams are reaching their maximum potential and there's a danger it becomes a 'galactico-fits-all' policy trying to squeeze in additional quality.

Wonky in what sense mate?

Pele isn't being utilised to his maximum potentially, though some think he was at his best in his early years when he was more advanced, and he's still the best of all time as a forward IMO. Moreover, Stoichkov fits better because he could take up the advanced role, in a way Laudrup couldn't.

The wingers wouldn't be wonky I don't think.. Boniek on the right, Stoichkov on the left? Just like a normal 4-5-1, kind of how Chelsea played.

Quick question, who is my best winger? Just want to see how many share the new >>> old view.

I would go Giggsy personally. Wingers did feck all defending when Matthews played and I think it would get picked up on. Plus Giggs is just an easier sell.

Can't go wrong with Best and Giggsy as your wingers on the Caf.

I would surely rate Giggs-Best higher, no question. I haven't seen much of Matthews, better the devil you know and all that.

Would have to go into the specifics of how to get the best out of Boniek, which I certainly won't!

Sorry lads, I've been flooded with PMs recently so in clearing up some space I somehow managed to delete the first page of my inbox rather than my sent messages so I have neither KM nor Thisistheone's teams. Hopefully this won't hold up things for too long.

Remaining quarters

On 1st February 2013, 13:46

Nah, it's criminal to spend two weeks drafting and writing up player profiles and then find someone randomly posted some teamsheet you were mulling over and you lost based on that.

In future rounds though, teams do go into the game, as scheduled, with whatever they submitted for their last game. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

Stobzilla and NM, you are now more than 12 hours late on submitting your teamsheets. All you have to do is stick 11 shirts on a green rectangle and write 3-4 paragraphs (2500 characters in a PM).

NM, I know you are sick, but we extended to 2PM. At 3PM you supposedly had the stuff ready and were awaiting Theon's views. Brwned checked at 6PM from work and there was nothing, I came back home at 9PM after the religious ceremony at a wedding to see if I could squeeze in some points before going into the party, getting plastered and being out for another 12 hours. Nothing.

Both Dan and I sent our stuff yesterday. As of now, both games can start (and will only start) whenever Dan and I feel like it. If your write-ups are not in whatever you posted on here will be posted on the poll along with your write-up for the last game.

I am going to respectfully forfeit my game, I have not had time nor do I have the means of making those tactics graphics, Dan has had his on time, fair play to him allow him through.

I won't be spoken to in any sort of tone when I have more pressing commitments to tend to and especially when any sense of enjoyment is taken from it.

Congratulations Dan and good luck to everyone else.

Ah man that's shit! Shall i just make a formation for you then the game can go ahead if you don't have the time?

my game can start in a half hour. ill just send the formation picture and whatever theon has. apologies for the delay.

Player Profiles 3

Gunter Netzer
Considered to be one of the greatest passers ever. When Barcelona signed Cruyff, Real Madrid responded by signing Netzer – that’s how highly regarded he was at the time. It was also a successful switch – Netzer won the league and cup multiple times there. A 2 time German footballer of the year, Netzer was the iconic playmaker and is considered one of the best midfielders of all time, gaining a lot of attention with his long passes and pushes from deep within his own half of the pitch. Apart from his superior ball skills, his natural authority made him the undisputed leader of his team

Billy McNeill
Voted the greatest evert Celtic captain by fans – captained them to their European cup in 1967. He made 790 appearances for Celtic, and has the unique distinction of NEVER being substituted.

Ashley Cole
Not much anybody here doesn’t know about him. He was/is the best in the world at his peak. The only fullback to ever completely shut down Ronaldo. He has been an integral part of 2 absolutely great defenses – Arsenal’s Invincibles, and Chelsea’s outstanding backline for the past 6 years. He is a brilliant defender, and provides a brilliant outlet going forward. He is strong enough to dominate a wing on his own – he has done that repeatedly at Chelsea and Arsenal. The best left back of the past decade.

Marco Tardelli
Possibly one of the best box to box midfielders ever time. He was a battler – hated losing. His celebration after scoring the worl-dup winning goal said it all. The man is passionate to win. He also had a knack of popping up with vital goals – the world cup winner being one of them! Tardelli’s work-rate and familiarity with Boniek will be a another advantage most teams won’t have – a lot of my team has actually played with each other.

Ricardo Carvalho
Carvalho compliments Passarella brilliantly. He is cool, quick and a great reader of the game. He is also very good on the ball - just like Passarella. Putting pressure on them is pointless. He is quick, good in the air, and has an amazing will to win. He was part of Chelsea’s magnificent defense, and will benefit from playing with Cole again. His reading of the game and anticipation will ensure no problems arise when Passarella bombs forward.

I think you are overreacting.

Any "tone" obviously is related to the way Brwned and I have been fecked around all day (not by you specifically) with continuous requests for a bit more time. We also had more pressing concerns and, as I said earlier (on some thread which there's no reason for you to have read) I'm off for 4 days from midnight tomorrow so our match definitely had to go ahead.

Effectively it means I'll miss the entire "2nd half" of my game unless I leave you all to wait for my return, which is a bit ridiculous really.

The only reason you are included is because you also are late. So long as Dan is fine with it, you can play tomorrow or Saturday, it doesn't really matter. The point is that missing the scheduled time hands over the prerrogative on timing, etc. to the team that was on time and that applied to both of you. And that's it really.

In practice, I told Brwned to sleep well and we'll start my game in the morning and miss the end. Crap, but I'm not keen on stalling this for days. Your game is entirely down to what Dan wants to make of it. He most likely isn't going away for four days so I'd expect you two to find a convenient time and he seems to be more than willing to accommodate.

anto can't we just play next week when you are back? I wouldn't want you to miss parts of the game.

I really did my best - I am just really sick right now. I can't even talk.

Why take part when you know you won't have time or whatever reason you are giving?

There were plenty of others who wanted to but couldn't!

Mate, when you first mentioned being ill a few days back I thought it was a flu or something but clearly it's not as simple as that.

I would happily wait for you, but that leaves everyone on standstill and we don't know how well you may be next week. More to the point, I think a fantasy competition on redcafe is the last thing you should be worrying about right now.

This all had little to do with you or Stobzilla and more with Theon going AWOL yesterday despite having agreed times he would be able to come on and sort it out. I think the best option is for your AM to take over for this game. Then if you go through and feel better next week you can take back the reins for the semi.

Seriously, look after yourself first and foremost. No point dragging this as something on the back of your mind. We are going ahead as per 11AM kick-off.

You complete prick Antohan. You’re bang out of order here. I found out in the morning and had one day to do NM’s write up for him. As I told you in a PM it would be 8 or 9pm before I could get them done, so this 3 oclock deadline was never going to happen, I wasn’t even on the caf to find out but had about 6 pms from you when I logged on. You can’t demand people drop all their commitments to suit yourself when the majority of them are far more important. Not that I should even entertain the idea of explaining my schedule to you, but I had my son to look after until afternoon then important work to complete, before picking him up and getting fed, then to sleep. The fecking nerve of you to claim I went AWOL because I wasn’t on the Caf for a day is pathetic.

I already knew all your schedule, you had PMd it to us explaining why it would be hard to fit it in until 8-9PM, which is why when NM PMd us telling us he had sent you his stuff I told Brwned to go off to work and we would check back at 8-9PM for kick off.

Go look when I posted that. That was hours after the 8-9PM you had committed to. We were sat on our arses waiting up on you all along. And yes, we too had stuff to do.

I drove back from a fecking wedding to get two hours before returning for the party. Why? Because if the game didn't start then I was going to miss half of it (which I will now) and missing the start by 8 hours was going to be a bit shit.

I had told you I would be doing that if we couldn't start at 3-4PM. You had told us you would be here at 8-9PM. At 11PM no fecking news, that's the definition of AWOL and complete lack of respect for other people's time when both Brwned and I had juggled our schedules to accommodate your late start request.

How the feck am I out of order? You are out of order.

And BTW, I AM sorry Stobzilla and NM had to be dragged into it but it was only fair to restate the basic rules in relationship to everyone. It had bugger all to do with them or their actions though. For all I know Dan had no problem waiting on Stob.

Why take part when you know you won't have time or whatever reason you are giving?

There were plenty of others who wanted to but couldn't!

Because I did have ample time before my circumstances at work changed. If you want to take over my team mate go ahead, I already offered someone that chance.
