All-Time Fantasy Draft

THOUGHTS?

Formidable partnerships in central midfield and attack. Not seeing any chinks apart from Carvalho.

The major problem I can see is that its a two man midfield while most of the teams in the draft have gone with three. Although it might work but think it will cost you guys votes.

Not a chance IMO. It isn't the numbers, it's the players and we have fluid workhorses throughout the team. Our two forwards aren't even strikers but are both comfortable in an attacking midfield role, then you have Boniek who runs all day and the best defensive fullback of all time.

It's a very lazy criticism, "oh 3 is bigger than 2". Means feck all unless you actually analyse the players.

It is a lazy criticism but I wont be surprised if most people vote like that seeing as they will only look at the team sheets for 5-10 seconds and will vote based on that.

Like I said it might work in real life but will cost you guys votes.

Done this again just to better illustrate the fluidity of the attack and the ability for both of the strikers to drop deep and play in the hole as an attacking midfielder - hopefully will counter the criticism that Neeskens and Tardelli will be out fought by the opposing two CM's and their attacking mid, who will likely be doing no more defensively than Pele or Rummenigge would!

Rummenigge is positions to the left so he can interchange with Blokhin at times, with the winger drifting in to run at the defence and the German peeling to the left and running the channels. Likewise on the right, Boniek is comfortable playing as an attacking midfielder and can cut infield at will. The two wingers and two forwards offer the best collective ability to run at defenders and dribble through the backline. This ability isn't solely limited to trickery, which they possess in abundance, but lighting pace as well which provides a decisive threat on the counter. Neeskens and Tardelli will solely focus on the midfield battle and are a match for any of the partnerships assembled in the draft.

Argentinian colours in favour of our captain - Daniel Passarella.

Ryan Giggs picked ahead of Thierry Henry?

At his peak Henry was the better player but a) France has a much bigger pool of players and b) there's a much bigger strikers pool than wingers - so much so that Henry's probably not even the first French striker I'd pick. There've been just 11 wingers in the top 3 of the Ballon D'or while there's been 40 forwards. There's been just 1 Welshman in the top 3 compared to 8 Frenchmen. No-brainer really.

So lets have a few opinions on mine from the more experienced heads. All I've had so far is good and excellent in words that simple

Too few big names/obscure players will hurt you IMO. sorry.

How do you get someone a bit like Messi, but with an aerial threat?

A centreforward with pace and dribbling ability, who can linkup effectively with others, AND be an aerial threat?

Ladies and gentlemen, the man who could jump higher than a keepers' arms from a standing position.

And when the ball is not high enough will bicycle kick it.

And if slightly behind him will scorpion kick it.

The highest ever goalscorer in the then bestest Argentinian league.

The Wickerman.

The red jack-in-the-box....

Ah yeah the nations thing. Fair do's.

Top scorer for three consecutive seasons: 1937 (47 goals in 34 games), 1938 (43 goals in 30) and 1939 (40 goals in 32), averaged over 1 goal per game in all three. Got 331 goals in 372 games over his entire career.

"Erico was different to all, all and any of the players I have see. An outstanding player. Everything that could be described, without exaggeration, in the five laters of the word CRACK. To me, he was like a circus juggler, an artist. Sorry, a great artist...

It was like a trampoline, there was something under those boots. His movement, the elasticity of his body. He had a unique leap".

- Alfredo Di Stéfano, talking about the man that time and time again denied his team when he was still in Argentina.

Don't really understand what Schuster and Gullit are doing out there myself. What are their roles? I think of Gullit first and foremost for that partnership with van Basten up top and there's potential there to have a devastatingly physical and direct attack alongside Batigol but then that leaves Schuster doing nothing. He's already in there doing what Sócrates is meant to be doing. I'd try and get some width in the next couple of rounds to at least offer a different option. Gullit, Sócrates and Masopust in a midfield three is pretty robust with Batistuta playing that lone role he excelled at with two wide players at least stretching the game and offering an injection of pace.

Peter Shilton.

Shilton
Gerets --- Bergomi --- Koeman --- Marzolini
Varela --- Breitner
Jairzinho --- Kopa --- Stoichkov
Puskas

Thoughts?

Class in all areas of the pitch. There's conflicting views on Jennings, Shilton and Banks but what's clear is they're all in that top bracket and that Schmikes is in that bracket rather than out on his own.
Shilton was the best, followed by Banks. Jennings was not so consistent and is probably behind Seaman and Schmeichel, add Clemence, VdS and Southall and I think you've got the best keepers in the PL in 50 years .

Still, for what it's worth, and limited to 'keepers I've seen play, I'd mention Shilton and Schmeichel as being up there.
My father always insisted Lev Yashin was the greatest ever. I so wish I could have seen him play in his pomp.

R Charlton (easily)
Matthews
Moore
Keegan (former European player of the year)
Greaves

I never saw Edwards. There's a reason why the best players are forwards, which is why I put Moore below Matthews. Shilton is the best English goalkeeper I've seen.

Banks and Shilton were a good bit better than your Danish bloke.

Shilton at his best probably shades it from Banks. Then a pack of Seaman, Schmeichel, Clemence, Jennings (Spurs days) maybe. Cech might make it in time, no one else playing in the PL today is in that league.

Shilton at his best, when he played for forest, was as good as any I have seen and I would bracket him Banks, Schmeichel and Jennings as the top four keepers during the last 50 years thats in no particular order.

Interesting quotes Brwned, thanks. Wasn't old enough to ever watch Shilton when he was playing (or any of my picks I believe) but he's always been fabled in my family.

Was Sammer not only considered world class when he moved to sweeper? I can't really recall how good he was in midfield

Júlio César was still sweeper for them when they won their first title in 30 years in 94/95, Sammer was a marauding centre mid then. He was essentially named the best midfielder in Europe that season as he finished in 9th place in the Ballon D'or ahead of Desailly, Sousa, Boban and Redondo.

Hard to see on the phone. If he is, someone pm stobzilla, please. Cheers.

Just wondering how much weight-age should we put on Ballon D'or lists. After all they are votes from a group of people most of whom concentrate on title wins and other stats and we see players winning that award at times when they don't deserve it, so those lists, whilst being a good indicator of telling who was doing well that season, are not really 100% accurate are they? Like in this example, Desailly or Redondo could have easily had a better season than Sammer and a few places up or down in a voting list cannot really tell us the real picture, I feel.

In fact that shift in power from Barca to Madrid that season depended mainly on three factors : 1. Laudrup's swap. 2 Romario not getting along well with the coach and not stopping his overnight partying that continued from the world cup and 3. Real Madrid signing Fernando Redondo.
